Quality of life in long-term breast cancer survivors in Sub-Saharan Africa: the African Breast Cancer-Disparities in Outcomes study.

PURPOSE: In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), breast cancer survivors' (BCS) quality of life (QoL) remains understudied. We compared QoL in BCS to cancer-free (CF) women across SSA settings with different levels of development, healthcare systems, ethnic compositions, and HIV prevalence. METHODS: In 2022-2023, all 5 + year BCS from the African Breast Cancer-Disparities in Outcomes study and age-matched CF women from the community setting answered the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire in Namibia, Nigeria, and Uganda. For each WHOQOL-BREF domain and general item, we estimated BCS-CF adjusted mean differences (

"Better to die trying": Vaccine perceptions and COVID-19 experiences in rural Namibian pastoralists.

Substantial research indicates that local explanatory models of disease shape heath behaviors. However, less is known regarding how cultural models of disease influence interpretations of vaccines. Vaccination decisions are based around a plethora of social and cultural factors, including beliefs about disease, cultural-historical experiences with healthcare, and recent vaccination experiences. To understand how local interpretations of vaccination influence vaccination-decision making, we explore cultural models of health, vaccine norms, and COVID-19 beliefs and experiences in Himba and Herer

Rabies and Pinnipeds Reviewed: Premonitions, Perturbations, and Projections?

Rabies is an acute, progressive, viral encephalitis. Warm-blooded vertebrates are susceptible. Major reservoirs reside in the Chiroptera and Carnivora. Among the latter, representatives include dogs, ferret badgers, foxes, jackals, mongooses, raccoons, and skunks. Within the Carnivora, pinnipeds represent a diverse group of >30 extant species. These marine mammals range from the Arctic to Antarctica, but there is no review about rabies in this group. Apparently, only a single 1980 case of rabies occurred from Svalbard in a ringed seal (Phoca hispida). However, in 2024, incidental cases appeare

CROI 2024: The Challenges of Sustained Viral Suppression, Advanced HIV Disease, and Ending the HIV Epidemic Targets.

Data on the HIV care cascade demonstrated challenges in achieving Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) targets across all 18 EHE focus metropolitan areas, but innovative adherence interventions using point-of-care tenofovir testing and motivational interviewing support care cascade outcomes in Namibia and South Africa, respectively. Data on treatment with long-acting injectable (LAI) antiretroviral therapy (ART) demonstrated high acceptability, retention, and virologic suppression including in groups that were not well represented in clinical trials including persons born female and persons with dete

Patterns of adverse childhood experiences and their associations with mental distress, substance use and sexual risk behaviors in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with poor sexual and mental health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Less well understood is how discrete and gendered clustering of ACEs may influence health. OBJECTIVE: To assess how multiple ACEs co-occur and how dominant patterns of co-occurrence are associated with mental distress, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors among young women and men in Sub-Saharan Africa. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used pooled data of young men and women aged 19-24 from comparable, nationally representative Viol

Indoor secondhand tobacco smoke and risk of under-five mortality in 23 sub-Saharan Africa countries: A population based study and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inhalation of secondhand smoke from tobacco results in serious health outcomes among under-five children, and yet, few studies have assessed its effect on under-five mortality. We investigated the association between frequency of exposure to household tobacco smoke and risk of under-five mortality in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: Demographic Health Survey data of under-five children from 23 SSA countries (n = 787,484) were used. Cox proportional hazard models described the association between exposure to tobacco smoke and the risk of under-five mortality in each country, with

Strengthening pharmacovigilance and regulatory capacity in Southern Africa (SPaRCS): achievements, experiences and lessons learned from a participatory action learning project.

Effective regulatory systems play a critical role in improving access to safe, efficacious and quality medicines and vaccines. However, most regulatory and pharmacovigilance (PV) systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are still under-resourced and lack recognition of their public health service role, despite encouraging developments in several countries, and positive experiences of harmonization across the continent. The aim of Strengthening pharmacovigilance and regulatory capacities in four Southern African countries (SPaRCS), was to improve pharmacovigilance and clinical trials oversight in Na

Environmental cues and individuality shape diel and seasonal antelope behaviour in African drylands.

Large herbivores play a central role in dryland ecosystems, influencing vegetation dynamics, nutrient cycling, and trophic interactions. While they are adapted to cope with harsh climates, their persistence is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. However, the behavioural strategies they use to cope with these combined environmental challenges remain understudied. Using multi-year accelerometer data from springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), and common eland (Taurotragus oryx) in northern Namibia, we examined diel and seasonal behaviour in r
