BACKGROUND: Specific questionnaire and skin prick test (SPT) are the most used methods in epidemiological studies on respiratory allergy. SPT, however, can be positive in many subjects without evidence of any allergic disease. Nasal IgE determination has been suggested by some authors as a valuable diagnostic method, which may overcome this lack of specificity.

A total of 106 children suffering from perennial rhinitis and/or asthma, and all allergic to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP), underwent nasal provocation challenge (NPC) with DP to determine the best method of diagnosis. We examined the serial changes of intravenously applied dye leakage and preliminary examined histamine release into nasal lavage fluid after topical stimulation with capsaicin in guinea pigs.
