CO2 agitation combined with magnetized biochar to alleviate "ammonia inhibited steady-state": Exploring the mechanism by combining metagenomics with macroscopic indicators.

The "ammonia inhibited steady-state" phenomenon is frequently observed in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process of nitrogen-rich substrates. Reconfiguring microbial ecosystems has proven to be an effective strategy for mitigating ammonia inhibition. In the current study, biochars were screened and targeted for modification. CO2 agitation combined with magnetized biochar was used to aid the semi-continuous AD systems with "ammonia inhibited steady-state." The results indicated that coconut shell biochar had the best stimulating effect on AD performance. The content of oxygen-containing functiona

Mechanistic insights and performance of Mn redox cycling in a dual-bacteria bioreactor for ammonium and Cr(VI) removal.

The co-contamination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and ammonium (NH4+-N) in industrial wastewater has attracted considerable attention due to its serious threats to both ecological systems and public health. Manganese(IV) (Mn(IV))-driven NH4+-N oxidation (Mnammox) coupled with Mn(II)-mediated denitrification (MnOD), built on the Mn redox cycle, is a promising nitrogen removal process, where Mn(II) and NOx--N generated during Mnammox were effectively controlled by MnOD. Herein, a bioreactor integrating Mnammox and MnOD for NH4+-N and Cr(VI) removal was constructed utilizing core-shell gel bea

Study of the key biotic and abiotic parameters influencing ammonium removal from wastewaters by Fe3+-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox).

The release of ammonia (as NH4+) into water bodies causes serious environmental problems. Therefore, the removal of ammonia from wastewater effluents has become a worldwide concern. New autotrophic biological alternatives for ammonia removal could reduce the limitations of conventional organic carbon-dependent nitrification-denitrification methods. Here, the potential of anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe3+ reduction (a process known as Feammox) is studied in wastewater treatment plants of the yeast and beer production industry, not related to ammonium or iron treatment. This process i

Elucidating performance failure in the use of an Anaerobic-Oxic-Anoxic (AOA) plug-flow system for biological nutrient removal.

The Anaerobic-oxic-anoxic (AOA) process is a carbon-saving and high-efficiency way to treat municipal wastewater and gets more attention. Recent reports suggest that in the AOA process, well-performed endogenous denitrification (ED), conducted by glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs), is crucial to advanced nutrient removal. However, the consensuses about starting up and optimizing AOA, and in-situ enriching GAOs, are still lacking. Hence, this study tried to verify whether AOA could be established in an ongoing anaerobic-oxic (AO) system. For this aim, a lab-scale plug-flow reactor (working

Biotransformation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by aerobic granular sludge: Removal performance, degradation mechanism and microbial response.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a promising biotechnology for the treatment of antibiotic-rich wastewater. However, little is known about the antibiotics degradation mechanism and microbial response in a sulfamethoxazole (SMX)-loaded AGS system. Herein, the results of a continuous 240 days test suggested that 0.5-5 mg/L of SMX could be thoroughly removed by AGS via adsorption and degradation. The degradation pathway of SMX involved the hydrolysis of the sulfonamide bond and cleavage of NS or CS bonds, subsequently leading to the production of small molecular substances (e.g. benzene and 5-met

Simultaneous removal of concentrated organics, nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients by an oxygen-limited membrane bioreactor.

Simultaneous removal of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus was achieved in a bench-scale oxygen-limited membrane bioreactor (OLMBR). Due to the limited dissolved oxygen (~ 0.2 mg/L equilibrium concentration) and the increased sludge concentration associated with the hollow fiber membrane, the OLMBR was endowed with an excellent performance on the removal of multi-pollutants. The optimized removal efficiencies of COD, nitrogen (N), and total phosphorus (TP) were approximately 95.5%, 90.0% and 82.6%, respectively (COD/N/P = 500:10:1, influent loading = 5.0 kg COD·m-3·d-1, 35°C). Selective effect and elimination of antibiotics in membrane bioreactor of urban wastewater treatment plant.

Analyzing the temporal dynamics of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the functional community could contribute to the regulation and optimization of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation to achieve better antibiotics and ARGs removal performances during different seasons. However, there is little research in this area. Therefore, in this study, samples were collected from the influent, activated sludge (AS), and permeate of the membrane bioreactor (MBR) in a WWTP located in Beijing, China, biweekly over 13 months, and then analyzed systematically. The removal efficiency

Atmospheric inputs and nitrogen saturation status in and adjacent to Class I wilderness areas of the northeastern US.

Atmospheric inputs of N and S in bulk deposition (open collectors) and throughfall (beneath canopy collectors) were measured in and adjacent to two Class 1 wilderness areas of the northeastern US. In general, atmospheric S inputs followed our expectations with throughfall S fluxes increasing with elevation in the White Mountains, New Hampshire and throughfall S fluxes being greater in coniferous than deciduous stands in both sites. In contrast, throughfall N fluxes decreased significantly with elevation. Throughfall NO3 (-) fluxes were greater in coniferous than deciduous stands of Lye Brook,

Effect of prescribed fire on soil properties and N transformation in two vegetation types in South China.

Prescribed fire is a common site preparation practice in forest management in southern China. However, the effect of fire on soil properties and N transformations is still poorly understood in this region. In this study, soil properties and N transformations in burned and unburned site of two vegetation types (Eucalyptus plantation and shrubland) were compared in rainy and dry seasons after 2 years' prescribed fire. Soil pH and soil NH4-N were all higher in the burned site compared to the unburned control. Furthermore, burned sites had 30-40 % lower of soil total phosphorus than conspecific un

Impact of a real-time controlled wastewater subsurface drip disposal system on the selected chemical properties of a vertisol.

The operation of onsite septic effluent disposal without considering seasonal moisture changes in drain field conditions can be a major cause of the failure of conventional septic systems. This study addressed this issue from a soil hydraulic perspective by using real-time drain field soil moisture levels to limit septic effluent disposal in a vertisol via subsurface drip irrigation. A prototype system was field-tested in a Houston clay soil and results describe the subsequent impact on selected soil chemical properties. After one year of hydraulic dosing with a synthetic wastewater, soil tota

Effects of free cyanide on microbial communities and biological carbon and nitrogen removal performance in the industrial activated sludge process.

The changes in process performance and microbial communities under free cyanide (CN(-)) were investigated in a lab-scale activated sludge process treating industrial wastewater. The performance of phenol degradation did not appear to be adversely affected by increases in CN(-) concentrations. In contrast, CN(-) was found to have an inhibitory effect on SCN(-) biodegradation, resulting in the increase of TOC and COD concentrations. Nitratation also appeared to be inhibited at CN(-) concentrations in excess of 1.0 mg/L, confirming that nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) is more sensitive to the CN

[Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal by aerobic granular sludge at normal and low temperatures].

The simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal (SNPR) from real domestic wastewater using aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has been investigated. The effect of temperature changes on the SNPR of AGS was also studied. Two lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), named as A and B, were operated for 254 days in alternating anaerobic-aerobic mode. The AGS was cultivated in 20 days using settling time as selection pressure. From the 42nd day onwards, additional carbon (acetate and peptone for A, glucose for B) were added to make the ratio of COD:N:P as 360:60:6. The SNPR by AGS was achieved for 4

Partial nutrient removal under insufficient organic carbon from digested swine wastewater in sequencing batch biofilm reactor.

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using a biofilm process for partial nutrient removal from digested swine wastewater containing low ratios of chemical oxygen demand (COD) to nitrogen and phosphorus; on average, 1.6 g COD g(-1) N and 7 g COD g(-1) P. We used a laboratory-scale sequencing batch biofilm reactor with alternating conditions of 4 hours anaerobic/ 12 hours aerobic, and a hydraulic retention time of 16 hours. Although the concentration of dissolved oxygen under aerobic conditions was > 2.5 mg L(-1), the efficiency of denitrification was up to 85% of th

Additive Effects of Multiple Global Change Drivers on Terrestrial Nitrogen Cycling Worldwide.

Global change has dramatically altered the Earth's biogeochemical cycles. However, the interactive effects of multiple global change factors (GCFs) on terrestrial nitrogen (N) cycling worldwide remain unclear, limiting the ability to predict how future global change will affect the global N cycle. We conducted a meta-analysis of 108 published articles to evaluate the main and interactive effects of elevated CO2, N addition, warming, and altered precipitation on soil N pools (NH4 +, NO3 -, and organic N) and transformation rates (N mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification) across terr

Groundwater Microbiology of an Urban Open-Loop Ground Source Heat Pump with High Methane.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are low-carbon alternatives to gas boilers for decarbonizing heating. Open-loop GSHP systems abstract groundwater, pass it through a heat exchanger, and return it to ground or surface water. Groundwater samples from the top and base of an abstraction and a recharge borehole of an open-loop GSHP system in Cardiff, UK were assessed, and compared to two local boreholes in the same aquifer. Groundwater samples were taken when the GSHP system was active (once) and inactive (twice) and analyzed for changes in geochemistry, viable cell counts, and microbial community

The stable operation of nitritation process with the continuous granular sludge-type reactor and microbial community analysis.

The nitritation step is the fundament for the biological nitrogen removal regardless of the traditional nitrification and denitrification process, the nitrite shunt process or the anammox process. Thus, exploring the effective nitritation performance is an important aspect of biological nitrogen removal. This study explored the upper limit of nitritation rate by increasing hydraulic residence time with the well-mixed and continuous granular sludge-type reactor characterized with low complexity and easy operation. The results showed that with the nitrogen loading rate of 1.0 kg/m3/d, the nitrit

The prokaryotic community of Chondrosia reniformis Nardo, 1847: from diversity to mercury detection.

Microbial communities inhabiting sponges are known to take part in many metabolic pathways, including nutrient cycles, and possibly also in the bioaccumulation of trace elements (TEs). Here, we used high-throughput, Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA genes to characterize the prokaryotic communities present in the cortex and choanosome, respectively the external and internal body region of Chondrosia reniformis, and in the surrounding seawater. Furthermore, we estimated the total mercury content (THg) in these body regions of the sponge and in the corresponding microbial cell pellets. Fifteen pro
