BACKGROUND: Oral cancer has a profound impact on the quality of life for patients and their families. Functionally, the mouth is an important organ for speech, swallowing, chewing, taste and salivation. These functions become compromised due to surgical ablation of the tumour. Obturator prosthesis is a common prosthdontic rehabilitative option for maxillectomy patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate how patients with maxillofacial defects evaluate their quality of life after maxillectomy and prosthodontic therapy with obturator prostheses.
METHODS: Thirty patients were included

Severe limitation in the oral opening, though an uncommon clinical presentation, makes gaining access to the oral cavity difficult for any dental procedure. This article describes the maxillofacial prosthetic management of a patient with a midfacial defect complicated by postsurgical microstomia. Intraoral and extraoral prostheses restored the patient's speech, dental articulation, mastication, lip support, esthetics, and anterior oral seal.

Oral cancer commonly affects various parts of the oral cavity, including the lips, tongue, gums, palate, and inner cheeks. Oral rehabilitation involves multiple approaches aimed at restoring and improving oral function, esthetics, and overall well-being. This study assessed the functional outcomes and quality of life in patients who underwent rehabilitation following an oral cancer diagnosis. A comprehensive literature search was performed across PubMed, Cochrane Library, Dimensions, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, and Google Scholar databases. The study included patients diagnosed with oral cancer who

INTRODUCTION: Dens invaginatus is a rare developmental anomaly that occurs during odontogenesis, with a higher prevalence in the Caucasian race and no significant sex predilection; it can be bilateral. This anomaly occurs in approximately 1.26% of the teeth, and the maxillary lateral incisor is most often affected.
METHODS: This case report describes a female patient with dens invaginatus in the maxillary right conoid lateral incisor. The patient presented to Araçatuba School of Dentistry, Universidade Estadual Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1995 with an acute periapical abscess in the palat

PURPOSE: This study hypothesizes comparable implant success in bone-grafted cleft-alveolus versus traumatic anterior maxillary defects. Though of different pathogenesis, both defects comprise bone deficit, scarred periosteum, and soft tissues. Additional complicating factors are isolated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty cleft and 20 traumatic defect cases were followed-up 48 months in average. After 9 secondary and 11 tertiary cleft-osteoplasties, 25 implants were inserted; in traumatic defects following 8 two-stage and 12 one-stage osteoplasties, 37 incisor or canine implants were inserted. Tessier cleft types 3 and 4 are both rare craniofacial anomalies. Here we present the first case of a girl born with a combined anomaly of Tessier clefts 3 and 4 with severe bilateral cleft lip, a displaced premaxilla, and three-dimensional underdevelopment of the hard and soft tissues of the maxilla and zygoma. This type of rare facial cleft poses a major operative challenge. Over a period of years, presurgical alveolar molding with an active appliance was followed by seven operations. A satisfactory esthetic outcome was obtained. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment with a plastic surge

BACKGROUND: Unilateral cleft lip and / or palate (UCL/P) is one of the most common congenital craniofacial differences. The objective of this study was to describe the maternal perception of breastfeeding in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate and to assess the role of breastfeeding counseling.
METHODS: This study was conducted using an interpretive phenomenological approach to explore the experience from the perspectives of mothers breastfeeding her UCL/P child. Twenty-eight mothers of patients with nonsyndromic UCL/P treated with nasoalveolar molding (NAM) therapy between April 20

Maxillary defects pose challenges for prosthodontists, especially when patients have no remaining teeth. This clinical report describes rehabilitation with a complete denture obturator fabricated in 2 visits for an edentulous patient after a maxillectomy. The obturator base and artificial teeth were digitally designed and merged into a 1-piece prosthesis. Following a virtual reduction, the integrated prosthesis and a gingival veneer were calculated and then printed and bonded together to complete the fabrication. Balanced occlusion was achieved with the assistance of a digital occlusion analyz

CURRENT KNOWLEDGE: Children with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) typically have difficulty with bolus transport and swallowing. Due to velopharyngeal insufficiency caused by the cleft palate, a high percentage of the children affected also have impaired Eustachian tube function.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: In the literature, substantial information may be obtained on conductive hearing loss in PRS patients; however, no study has yet been performed to investigate whether wearing a soft palate plate and relatively early surgical cleft palate closure positively influence Eustachian tube function. In the pres

There are several dental complications associated with cocaine abuse, including adverse reactions to dental anesthetics, post-operative bleeding, and cellulitis, which can lead to necrosis of orbital, nasal, and palatal bones. Following is a report of the initial treatment rendered to a patient who had destroyed most of her hard palate over a ten-year period of cocaine abuse. There are no classic socio-economic or educational profiles for abusers of cocaine. Drug abuse victims may present as patients in any dental office. Though there are certain classic physiological and psychological symptom

OBJECTIVES: Cancers of the maxillary region are often treated surgically with a maxillectomy followed by rehabilitation involving surgical reconstruction or obturator insertion to improve functional outcomes. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding the specific indications for either rehabilitation method. The objective of this study was to identify unique functional domains for maxillectomy patients who underwent surgical reconstruction or obturator insertion post-op to provide standardized data that can inform selection of either method.
METHODS: This mixed-methods qualitative resea

This investigation was designed to compare nasal airway resistance (Rnaw) values by use of "head-out" plethysmography and standard posterior pressure-flow rhinometry. Fourteen adults who had prostheses because of velopharyngeal inadequacy caused by a variety of etiologic conditions were examined. Each patient performed rest breathing and sustained /m/ productions to develop Rnaw values for comparison. The results revealed increased Rnaw and decreased cross-sectional nasal airway area and derived velopharyngeal orifice area when the appliances were in place. The two techniques for assessing Rna

Aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of infant orthopaedics (IO) on maxillary dimensions in infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The study design was a prospective two-arm randomised controlled trial in parallel with three participating academic Cleft Palate Centres. Treatment was assigned by means of a computerised balanced allocation method. One group (IO+) wore passive maxillary plates during the first year of life, the other group (IO-) did not. Maxillary casts, made at birth, and at 15, 24, 48, 78 wk were digitised three-dimensionally. Before lip closure alveolar, m

Treating coronal dens invaginatus (CDI) with pulp infection typically involves the removal of the invaginatus, which increases the risk of fracture and perforation, compromising tooth structure. Minimally invasive endodontic management of coronal dens invaginatus is highly recommended. This case report presents the management of a 19-year-old female patient with a permanent maxillary lateral incisor exhibiting two distinct dens invaginatus anomalies. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to assist in the diagnosis of tooth morphology and canal location. CBCT confirmed that the buccally

UNLABELLED: Until now, there is no optimal technique for repairing oronasal fistula in patients with prior head and neck radiotherapy and trismus. Use of the silicone button is a safe, office-based, and validated method in this situation. The indications of this procedure are also clarified in this study. This is a retrospective study of four patients who underwent a newly designed endoscopic repair of oronasal fistula with silicone button under local anesthesia from July 2012 to August 2012. Data on the size of the defect, length of operation, symptom relief, and post-operative complications

PURPOSE: Prosthetic rehabilitation of speech disorders related to palatopharyngeal dysfunction is accomplished through separation of the oral and nasal cavities. The ability to achieve this separation is challenged when the disorder or defect involves the soft palate. Prosthetic rehabilitation of soft palate disorders and defects has traditionally relied on functional contouring of a prosthesis using functionally adapted impression materials. However, there are limitations to this process, particularly in its inability to visualize function as it relates to the prosthesis in a 3-dimensional sp
