Rhythm is an essential aspect of human music, typically characterized by temporal regularity of sound events and repetition of rhythmic patterns. One key biological trait for human rhythmic behavior is the ability to entrain movement to sound events, an ability possibly related to vocal production learning. Parrots share both of these crucial traits with humans. Budgerigars in particular can entrain to a beat, and female budgerigars, like humans, prefer rhythmic sounds. What remains unclear is whether this attraction to rhythm is based on the same features that are important in humans. If so,

Tumors in birds can be caused by a variety of factors such as species, age, sex, virus, chemicals, and environment. In particular, tumors are a major cause of death in long-lived birds such as parrots and zoo birds. A male sandhill crane that was bred for 8 years in a zoo was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). At necropsy, the liver revealed a multinodular mass of variable colors, and severe cirrhosis and hemorrhages were present. Histologically, ICC was characterized by the presence of both types of ICC: small-duct type and large-duct type. Large-duct-type ICC was distingui

Snake bites represent a serious public health risk in many regions of the globe, especially in tropical areas. Clinical signs and postmortem changes are well described in human and other mammalian species. However, detailed case reports about venomous snake attacks in avian species are limited. This report describes presumptive fatal envenomations in three psittacines caused by pit vipers in a Brazilian zoo. In one case, a Brazilian lancehead (Bothrops moojeni) was captured in the aviary. In all three cases the dermis around the suspected snake bite area exhibited hemorrhages and edema. Histol

Although the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida for psittacines (parrots and their relatives) has been documented in several case reports, the associated pathologic syndromes have not been well defined nor have the isolates been characterized. In addition, the prevalence of P. multocida in psittacines has not been determined. Three hundred twenty-eight psittacines (253 clinically healthy and 75 clinically ill) were cultured for P. multocida. Pasteurella multocida was not isolated from the pharynx, choana, or cloaca of psittacines. However, in five dead psittacines submitted for necropsy, P

In this case report, we describe the pathologic changes and the ultrastructural and molecular characteristics of an adenovirus in a sun conure (Aratinga solstitialis) that presented with a history of sudden death. On histologic examination, there was multifocal hepatic and splenic necrosis. Within some hepatocytes and unidentified cells in the spleen, renal interstitial fibroblasts, and ovarian stroma were intranuclear amphophilic inclusion bodies. Electron microscopy of affected tissue showed intranuclear icosahedral viral particles with an inner capsid (29.2-33.8 nm in diameter) and an outer

The effects of acute (3 h), repeated acute (3 exposures each of 3 h) and chronic (72 h) normobaric hyperoxic exposure in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were evaluated by monitoring the effects on pulmonary enzymic antioxidants, and indicators of lipid peroxidation. All durations of oxygen exposure resulted in significant respiratory alkalosis and elevated pulmonary and blood glutathione peroxidase concentrations. The concentrations of other pulmonary enzymic antioxidants including glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase were not significantly altered by oxygen exposure. Pulmonary

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) constitutes one of the main causes of mortality in children in low- to medium-income countries. Diverse animal species have been linked as reservoirs, including birds. The aim of this study was to describe the genomic and phylogenetic features of an EPEC recovered from a pet macaw and further characterizing the macro and microscopic lesion in a rabbit ileal loop experimental model. The isolate was whole-genome sequenced (WGS) obtaining its genotypic and phenotypic in silico characteristics and inoculated in a rabbit experimental model with subsequently

For some endangered parrot species, captive breeding may be the only insurance for their survival. However, many individuals in captivity do not reproduce. Artificial insemination (AI) may help overcome reproductive failures or geographic distance. For semen collection in birds, massage is the most commonly used method. However, this process, which usually requires capture and restraint, involves risk of stress and injuries. The aim of this experiment was to train large macaws to accept the physical manipulations of their body parts needed for the artificial insemination process. Within 15 wee

Eleven budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) from a zoological collection presented at necropsy with emaciation and splenomegaly or hepatomegaly or both. Polymerase chain reaction assays performed on liver and spleen samples were positive for Chlamydophila psittaci in 2 of 3 birds tested, and histologic findings in 2 additional birds were compatible with chlamydiosis. The aviary was subsequently closed to the public, and a 45-day treatment regimen with doxycycline in the seeds was initiated. No further deaths of birds with hepatomegaly or splenomegaly were observed after the first day of treat

The control of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae), the vectors of leishmaniasis, is directed mostly against adults as larvae develop in unknown or inaccessible habitats. In the current study we tested geraniol, a natural plant-derived product, as a space repellent and the synthetic pyrethroid prallethrin as a diffusible insecticide. Geraniol was dispersed in the air using diffusers with an electric fan and prallethrin was evaporated using electrically heated evaporators. Both substances were tested in inhabited bedrooms and in tents. Geraniol failed to effect significant reductions

Failures after rhinoplasty are the result of both technical mistakes and of errors of judgement. One of the most common errors is resection of too much tissue from the components of the nose: the dorsum, alar cartilages, or septum. Such deformities may have both cosmetic and functional effects. The defects that most commonly make a nose look unnatural are: a shallow nasofrontal angle, a nose that has been shortened too much, an over-reduced dorsum which emphasises a parrot's beak deformity, and a round nasal tip with a short interdomal length that lacks definition. The purpose of this paper is

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci is the causative agent of psittacosis in humans, while its rapid identification is hampered due to the lack of specificity of laboratory testing methods.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study reports four cases of C. psittaci infection after contact with a domestic parrot, all belonging to the same family. Common manifestations like fever, cough, headache, nausea, and hypodynamia appeared in the patients. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) aided the etiological diagnosis of psittacosis, revealing 58318 and 7 sequence reads corresponding to C. psittaci in two

Chlamydia psittaci is a zoonotic pathogen with a wide range of avian hosts and worldwide geographical spread. Zoonotic transfer occurs by inhalation or direct contact and may cause psittacosis or parrot disease. Host reservoirs of particular epidemiological interest include gregarious or migratory species, as colonial behavior facilitates microbial spread amongst conspecifics and a migratory ecology permits disperse over a wide geographic region. The current study detected C. psittaci antibodies in 76 of 81 (93.8%) feral Canada geese (Branta canadensis) using a species-specific enzyme-linked i

BACKGROUND: Nocardiosis is often a multi-systemic disease in humans and other mammals. Nocardiosis in birds is uncommon. Laboratory identification of Nocardia to the species level is difficult by traditional phenotypic methods based on biochemical reactions and hydrolysis tests, and is most accurately performed by sequencing multiple gene targets.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first case of fatal Nocardia nova infection in a yellow-bibbed lory nestling in an oceanarium diagnosed by multilocus sequencing. Necropsy examination showed effacement of normal sternal musculature with yellowish, f

In this paper ophthalmological and clinical results as well as the literature on lens-induced uveitis (LIU), a relatively unknown pathological syndrome in domestic animals, are presented. Out of all ocular material sent to the Institute of Pathology, GSF, from 1970 until 1990 (n = 864), 40 individual cases of LIU (14 cases in dogs, 13 in cats, 10 in rabbits, 1 in a horse and 2 in birds) were diagnosed. The histology of the eyes of the cases is characterized by a lesion of the lens capsule and a consequent reactive phacogenic inflammation of the anterior segment of the eye in the region of the

Three flocks of wild sulphur-crested cockatoos in southeastern Australia had a 10-20% prevalence of feather and beak deformities. In affected birds, the crest, tail, contour and down feathers were lost or reduced in length owing to a "pinching off" 0.5-1 cm above the skin. The underlying skin was discolored brown. Flight feathers appeared normal and could sustain flight. In mildly affected birds, only the crest and down feathers were involved. Histological examination of affected feathers showed necrosis of developing cells in their epidermal collars. The epidermis was moderately hyperplastic

This study aims to examine the frequency and antimicrobial sensitivity of Enterobacterales isolated from macaws in zoos in Northeastern Brazil. Using the following methodology, 97 cloacal swabs were collected from nine macaw species housed in eight zoological institutions across six states in Northeastern Brazil. Samples were collected using Stuart medium, pre-enriched in peptone water, and then enriched in Brain-Heart Infusion, Selenite Cystine, and Rappaport Vassiliadis broths. We then streaked them on MacConkey agar, Eosin Methylene Blue agar, Brilliant Green agar, and Salmonella-Shigella a

OBJECTIVES: Psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci, typically presents as atypical pneumonia. This report details a severe case characterized by rapid, sequential multi-organ failure, highlighting a life-threatening clinical spectrum beyond conventional respiratory manifestations.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 62-year-old man admitted with fever, cough, and lower limb weakness. Following an initial lack of response to broad-spectrum antibiotics, he developed rapidly progressive rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis, and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

The estuarine croaker (Pseudotolithus elongatus, Sciaenidae) has long-term socio-economic and ecological significance in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, but little has been reported on the population demographics of this species. In this study, a traditional morphometric approach was used to test the hypothesis that island samples are morphologically distinctive from adjoining estuarine waters. The study involved a total number of 612 specimens from four islands (Alligator, Tobacco, Parrot and James) of the lower Cross River, Nigeria as well as from the mouth of the Cross River
