Are you a visual "shader" or a "bolder"? Different visual routines create everyday hallucinations in "scaffolded attention".

The colors and lines that compose perceptual experience result from the interplay between visual processing pathways and the light that hits the retina. So it is striking that many individuals seem to also experience these visual properties even in the absence of explicit sensory cues-as in the phenomenon of "scaffolded attention." When observing a uniform grid of squares, people report perceiving the squares as grouped into shapes or patterns, where the squares sometimes appear brighter or colored (for "shaders"), or bolded or outlined (for "bolders"). With 100 observers, we used an interacti

Once in a blue Mooney! Using the effects of prior exposure to elicit qualitative differences in naming of multi-identity images.

We investigated the extent to which repetition priming can elicit qualitative differences in identification of a stimulus with multiple identities. In an exposure phase, participants viewed images of objects from one of two stimulus sets (A or B). In a naming phase, participants viewed superMooney stimuli (for 6 s each), comprising perceptually degraded (Mooney) versions of the A and B images superimposed in distinct colours, and attempted to name both. Across four experiments with university students (Ns = 51, 60, 61, 59), rates of correct naming of previously exposed components exceeded thos

Shape-similarity gain: A selection profile for simple objects.

Recent research has examined the selection profile-the pattern of enhancement and suppression of stimuli when allocating attention to a specific feature value. Support for several different selection profiles for simple feature dimensions (e.g., color, orientation) have been identified such as the feature-similarity gain and surround suppression effects. However, it is unclear whether the selection profile for more complex stimuli follows a similar pattern. Using a recently developed circular shape space, the current study assessed the selection profile for these simple shapes as an initial st

Fragile recurrent processing in Aphantasia: Evidence from visual pattern completion.

Aphantasia - the absence of voluntary visual imagery - is typically framed as an imagery deficit, but the recurrent circuits implicated in imagery also support perception. We asked whether aphantasic individuals are more vulnerable to backward masking during visual pattern completion, a task that depends on recurrent feedback to fill in missing information from partially occluded objects. 31 self-identified aphantasic participants and 41 controls categorized briefly presented, partially occluded objects (stimulus-onset asynchronies 25-150 ms) followed by either a noise mask or a blank screen.

Apparent-length expansion in whole contours and isolated parts: evidence for configuration-dependent processing.

The visual system overestimates the length of structured contours relative to adjacent empty intervals of the same physical size. This study examined whether apparent-length expansion occurs across isolated contour parts as well as complete objects, and whether the expansion of the whole can be predicted from that of its components. Observers matched the perceived horizontal extent of complete pentagons, incomplete pentagons with one or two missing segments, isolated apices, pedestals, parallel line pairs, and rectangles using an adjustment method. All stimulus types produced consistent positi

Border-ownership reversals determine the strength of metacontrast masking.

Visual objects can be rendered invisible if their borders are assigned to other objects, showing that border-ownership (BO) is critical for perception. Objects can also be rendered invisible by using masking to limit the amount of time the brain has to process the object. An example of this is metacontrast masking (MM). MM occurs when an object is briefly presented and is followed by the presentation of a mask with closely adjacent contours. The mask can render the target object invisible, even though the target object is processed in high level brain areas. We propose that a critical factor t

Lexical brain responses in 10-year-old children are impaired in dyslexia: An FPVS-EEG study.

The developmental origin of the left occipitotemporal cortex specialization for automatic lexical access from vision remains unclear. Here we investigated cortical specialization for print processing in children with or without dyslexia, focusing on two distinct tuning levels: coarse-grained tuning for letter/symbol discrimination, and fine-grained tuning for word/pseudoword discrimination. 10-year-old typical readers (n = 24) and children with dyslexia (n = 14) were tested with electroencephalography (EEG) and fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS), viewing streams of stimuli at a relatively

Effects of Partial Occlusion on Response Dynamics and Interregional Processing within Primate Superior Temporal Sulcus.

Recognizing partially occluded objects is a critical visual function that primates perform with ease, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Previous studies in the macaque inferotemporal cortex have reported mixed results on whether occlusion delays and reduces responses to partially occluded objects. To address this, we recorded single-unit activity from body-responsive regions of the middle and anterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) in male macaques while presenting body stimuli with varying levels of occlusion using a dot pattern. Occlusion reduced response s

Parafoveal Processing and Transposed-Letter Effects in Developmental Dyslexic Reading.

During reading, adults and children independently parafoveally encode letter identity and letter position information using a flexible letter position encoding mechanism. The current study examined parafoveal encoding of letter position and letter identity for dyslexic children. Eye movements were recorded during a boundary-change paradigm. Parafoveal previews were either an identity preview (e.g., nearly), a transposed-letter preview (e.g., enarly) or a substituted-letter preview (e.g., acarly). Dyslexic readers showed a preview benefit for identity previews, indicating that orthographic info

Overreliance on Sublexical Phonological Processing in Visual Word Recognition for Third-Grade Mandarin-Speaking Dyslexic Children.

Developmental dyslexic (DD) children encounter challenges in sublexical orthographic, phonological, and semantic processing. However, there exists limited knowledge about the predominance of these three types of sublexical processing in visual word recognition among DD children. To investigate this issue, we screened 50 DD and 47 typically developing (TD) third-grade native Chinese-speaking children, and employed a picture-novel character mapping task. We constructed four types of options: semantic radical-legal position pseudo characters (e.g., ), phonetic radical-legal position pseudo charac

Remediation of the picture-text problem for learners exhibiting reading deficits.

Early reading materials are replete with pictures. Pictures purportedly improve reading comprehension and motivation; however, the simultaneous presentation of pictures and text can also impede textual control for some readers. Attempts to remediate restricted stimulus control in picture-text compounds suggest that omitting the picture element is most effective, although these arrangements may also be less socially valid. The current study is an evaluation of a novel compound stimulus prompt (CSP) arrangement that required that the learner differentially respond to the underselected (i.e., tex

Neural Correlates of Category Learning in Monkey Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Area TE is required for normal learning of visual categories based on perceptual similarity. To evaluate whether category learning changes neural activity in area TE, we trained two monkeys (both male) implanted with multielectrode arrays to categorize natural images of cats and dogs. Neural activity during a passive viewing task was compared pre- and post-training. After the category training, the accuracy of abstract category decoding improved. Single units became more category selective, the proportion of single units with category selectivity increased, and units sustained their category-s

Induced awareness of synesthetic sensations in synesthetically predisposed "Borderline Non-synesthetes".

A long-standing issue concerning synesthesia is whether the trait is continuous or discontinuous with ordinary perception. Here, we found that a substantial proportion of non-synesthetes (>10 % out of >200 unselected participants) spontaneously became aware of their synesthesia by participating in an online survey that forced them to select colors for stimuli that evoke color sensations in synesthetes. Notably, the test-retest consistencies of color sensation in these non-synesthetes were comparable to those in self-claimed synesthetes, revealing their strong though latent synesthetic disposit

Visual Imagery and Perception Share Neural Representations in the Alpha Frequency Band.

To behave adaptively with sufficient flexibility, biological organisms must cognize beyond immediate reaction to a physically present stimulus. For this, humans use visual mental imagery [1, 2], the ability to conjure up a vivid internal experience from memory that stands in for the percept of the stimulus. Visually imagined contents subjectively mimic perceived contents, suggesting that imagery and perception share common neural mechanisms. Using multivariate pattern analysis on human electroencephalography (EEG) data, we compared the oscillatory time courses of mental imagery and perception

Enhanced detection of gaze toward an object: Sociocognitive influences on visual search.

Another person's gaze direction is a rich source of social information, especially eyes gazing toward prominent or relevant objects. To guide attention to these important stimuli, visual search mechanisms may incorporate sophisticated coding of eye-gaze and its spatial relationship to other objects. Alternatively, any guidance might reflect the action of simple perceptual 'templates' tuned to visual features of socially relevant objects, or intrinsic salience of direct-gazing eyes for human vision. Previous findings that direct gaze (toward oneself) is prioritised over averted gaze do not dist

Infants distinguish and represent pattern as an object feature from externally generated patterns superimposed on real, 3-dimensional objects' surfaces.

As infants form object representations, the patterns viewed on objects' surfaces may be challenging to decipher because these patterns may be created from the surface reflectance of an object (an object property) or from an external source, such as a cast shadow. We tested 7 ½-month-old infants' use of cues that specify the source of patterns seen on the surfaces of real, 3-dimensional objects to individuate those objects. Results suggest that when forming object representations based on patterns, 7½-month-olds rely heavily on temporal and depth cues to distinguish patterns inherent to the obj

Does an impaired lexicon produce legitimate alternative reading of components (LARC) errors in reading Japanese Kanji? Evidence from two-Kanji compound word reading in a Japanese-speaking patient with aphasia.

Several studies have reported a strong association between semantic system impairment and LARC error production. However, our patient with a left temporal lobe contusion, including the fusiform gyrus, showed LARC errors even in two-Kanji compound words, the meanings of which the patient understood. Also, the poor results of lexical decision and picture naming suggested problems in orthographic and phonological retrieval. From these results, we concluded that at least some LARC errors are independent of semantic impairment, and other explanations are needed for this type of error.

Statistical Learning of Orthographic Regularities in Chinese Children With and Without Dyslexia.

This study examined distributional statistical learning of positional, phonetic, and semantic regularities of an artificial orthography in Chinese children aged 8-10 years: 29 with dyslexia, 29 age-matched controls, and 30 reading-level matched controls. Despite having positional regularity learning performance comparable to the controls, the children with dyslexia were poorer at learning left-right structured characters than top-bottom structured characters in high- and low-consistency conditions. Moreover, they showed difficulties in mapping a given sound or meaning to a specific character c

Efficacy of dynamic visuo-attentional interventions for reading in dyslexic and neurotypical children: A systematic review.

Dyslexia is associated with phonological and visuo-attentional deficits. Phonological interventions improve word accuracy and letter-sound knowledge, but not reading fluency. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of dynamic computerized visuo-attentional interventions aimed at improving reading for dyslexic and neurotypical children aged 5-15. Literature searches in Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Scopus, ERIC, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library identified 1266 unique articles, of which 18 met inclusion criteria (620 participants; 91.40% dyslexic). Three types of visuo-attent
