Impact of prenatal cocaine exposure on child behavior problems through school age.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the trajectory of childhood behavior problems after prenatal cocaine exposure. METHODS: The Maternal Lifestyle Study, a longitudinal cohort study, enrolled children between 1993 and 1995 at 4 centers. Prenatal cocaine exposure was determined from mothers who admitted use and/or meconium results. Exposed children were matched with a group of nonexposed children within site and by gestational age, gender, race, and ethnicity. The study began at the 1-month corrected age with a total of 1388 children enrolled. A total of 1056 were assessed for internalizing, externalizing,

Smoking, drugs, and other behavioral health problems among multiethnic adolescents in the NHSDA.

Data from the NHSDA (2000) which contained screening measures for assessing risk for DSM-IV psychiatric disorders, were used to estimate smoking prevalence and its association with these disorders, among European American, Hispanic, and African American adolescents. Prevalence estimates, odds ratios, and hazard models were used to compare ethnic subgroups. European American and Hispanic adolescents born in the U.S. had a higher prevalence of smoking and DSM-IV tobacco dependence, and girls were higher than boys. Lifetime smokers had statistically significant odds ratios for anxiety, affective,

Translational science in action: hostile attributional style and the development of aggressive behavior problems.

A model of the development of hostile attributional style and its role in children's aggressive behavior is proposed, based on the translation of basic science in ethology, neuroscience, social psychology, personality psychology, and developmental psychology. Theory and findings from these domains are reviewed and synthesized in the proposed model, which posits that (a) aggressive behavior and hostile attributions are universal human characteristics, (b) socialization leads to the development of benign attributions, (c) individual differences in attributional style account for differences in a

Adolescent anabolic steroid use, gender, physical activity, and other problem behaviors*.

To test the comparative value of strain theory and problem behavior theory as explanations of adolescent anabolic steroid use, this study examined gender-specific relationships among steroid use, physical activity, and other problem behaviors. Based on the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 1997 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative sample of over 16,000 U.S. public and private high school students, binge drinking, cocaine use, fighting, and sexual risk-taking were associated with higher odds of lifetime steroid use. In gender-specific analyses, steroi

Etiologies of associations between childhood sleep and behavioral problems in a large twin sample.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the etiologies of covariation of childhood sleep problems and other behavioral/emotional problems in young children. METHOD: The parents of more than 6,000 twin pairs provided information on their twins' anxiety, conduct, and hyperactivity at ages 3, 4, and 7 by completing the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Information on sleep problems was obtained at age 3/4. RESULTS: Phenotypic correlations in preschool years between sleep problems and anxiety, conduct, and hyperactivity ranged from 0.17 to 0.22. These correlations were largely due to shared environmental

Relationships between psychiatric conditions and behavior problems among adults with mental retardation.

Adults with predominantly severe and profound mental retardation (N = 180) who lived in a developmental center were assessed with the Behavior Problems Inventory and the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped-II. Individuals with self-injurious, stereotyped, or aggressive/destructive behavior had generally higher psychopathology scores than individuals without, and the presence of behavior problems increased the likelihood of almost all psychiatric conditions up to three-fold. Factor analysis revealed that behavior problems tended to be associated with psychiatric conditions conven

Emotional and behavioral problems among female twins: an evaluation of the equal environments assumption.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the equal environments assumption (EEA) of the twin method for mother-reported symptoms of child and adolescent emotional and behavioral problems. METHOD: Four emotional and behavioral problem scales (symptoms of separation anxiety disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder) and four environmental similarity measures (sharing friends, sharing classes, dressing alike, and perceived zygosity) were assessed by telephone interviews with the biological mothers of 1,948 female adolescent and young adult twin pairs.

Psychological distress, problem behaviors, and family functioning of sexually abused adolescent inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: By studying children and adolescents who have been sexually abused, improvements in identifying and treating emerging pathology can be gleaned before personality structures become more rigidly defined and less amenable to therapeutic interventions. It is through studying and comparing subgroups of victims and controls that clinical researchers can additionally elucidate abuse-related manifestations that contribute to the development of psychopathology. METHOD: A group of sexually abused adolescent psychiatric inpatients was compared with a control group of inpatient counterparts on

Matching treatments to client problems not diagnostic labels: a case for paradigmatic behavior therapy.

The present article critically analyzes the current approach to treatment outcome research and the uncritical use of treatment packages. Comparing various combinations of treatments with groups of clients randomly assigned to these conditions has led to the neglect of individual differences between persons falling into broad diagnostic categories. The inconclusive results of such studies say little about the efficacy of a particular treatment for an individual client and are also not very useful in helping clinicians to decide which specific treatment to use for a given client. Although treatm

Toward a new paradigm in substance abuse and other problem behavior prevention for youth: youth development and empowerment approach.

The purpose of this article is to 1) address a paradigm shift taking place in the field of substance abuse prevention directed for youth and 2) to introduce an innovative approach to substance abuse and other problem behavior prevention that reflects this shift in prevention paradigm. The new path introduced is youth development and empowerment (YD&E) approach. In order to establish a conceptual foundation for this approach, this article 3) reviews the theoretical advances made in the field of substance abuse prevention during the last three decades. This is followed by a conceptualization of

Predictors of Sports Gambling among College Students: The Role of the Theory of Planned Behavior and Problem Gambling Severity.

The current study investigated what influences college students' behavioral intention and behavior towards sports gambling using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a theoretical framework. The study also explored the moderation effect of problem gambling severity in the relationships between TPB determinants, behavioral intention, and sports gambling behavior. Data were collected from 334 college students from four different universities in the U.S. and analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and multi-group analysis. The results indicated that attitu

Effect of Comorbid Psychopathology and Conduct Problem Severity on Response to a Multi-component Intervention for Childhood Disruptive Behavior.

This study examined the effects of comorbid ADHD symptoms, internalizing psychopathology, Callous-Unemotional (CU) Traits, and conduct problem severity on children's response to an evidence-based psychosocial intervention. Clinic-referred children with DBD ages 8-12 years (N = 76) participated in a 15-week multi-component intervention. Parents provided weekly ratings of children's oppositionality-defiance, peer problems, and impairment. Oppositionality-defiance, peer problems, and impairment decreased significantly over the course of the intervention; however, there was considerable variabilit

The effect of general and drug-specific family environments on comorbid and drug-specific problem behavior: a longitudinal examination.

Previous research has shown that the development of alcohol and tobacco dependence is linked and that both are influenced by environmental and intrapersonal factors, many of which likely interact over the life course. The present study examines the effects of general and alcohol- and tobacco-specific environmental influences in the family of origin (ages 10-18) and family of cohabitation (ages 27-30) on problem behavior and alcohol- and tobacco-specific outcomes at age 33. General environmental factors include family management, conflict, bonding, and involvement. Alcohol environment includes

Life events as correlates of problem behavior and mental health in a residential population of adults with developmental disabilities.

Very few existing empirical studies have explored the putative association between exposure to negative life events and psychological well-being in adults with developmental disabilities. In the present study, data on exposure to life events in the previous 12 months, adaptive behavior, problem behavior, and psychiatric problems were provided by care staff for 93 adults with developmental disabilities living in a residential hospital setting. Residents had typically been exposed to between three and four negative life events mainly relating to staffing and residence changes, conflict, family b

Patients who complain of social dysfunction as their main problem: II. Comparison with other outpatients seen for behavior therapy.

Forty socially dysfunctional patients (avoidant personality disorder, DSM-III) and 76 other patients also seen for behavioral psychotherapy rated 30 items from the Social Situations Questionnaire on dimensions of distress and frequency of involvement. A discriminant function analysis showed that socially dysfunctional patients formed a distinct group as compared with other patients on ratings of distress. The main characteristics were over initiating social contact and carrying on a conversation with people one does not know. The separation between groups on the rating of frequency of involvem
