[Rehabilitation of deaf children with a cochlear implant].

Before the development of cochlear implants, the acquisition of oral and written language and consequently good school levels were barely expected from profoundly deaf children. Since then it has been largely demonstrated that with cochlear implants these objectives are realistic provided these children are implanted early, before the age of 4 years old and receive appropriated speech therapy. We present here the rehabilitation program proposed at our center to the very young users of cochlear implants. This program results from analysis and observations developed during 12 years of speech the

Aphasia treatment delivered by telephone.

Telephone delivery of speech and language treatment programs may be an effective supplement to the more traditional face-to-face delivery. This report describes the response of a nonfluent aphasic patient who, at 11 years postonset, was treated over the telephone using a hierarchically structured syntax treatment program. Examination of pre- and posttreatment performance on the Northwestern Syntax Screening Test and the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination Cookie Theft Description showed improvement on both dependent variables. The results support the use of telephone therapy with patients wh

Using Electronic Medical Records and Clinical Notes to Predict the Outcome of Opioid Treatment Program.

Opioid addiction is a serious public health problem in the US, and this study aimed to explore how natural language processing (NLP) can be used to identify factors that contribute to distress in individuals with opioid addiction, and then use this information along with structured data to predict the outcome of opioid treatment programs (OTP). The study analyzed medical records data and clinical notes of 1,364 patients, out of which 136 succeeded in the program and 1,228 failed. The results showed that several factors influenced the success of patients in the program, including sex, race, edu

Optimizing Navigation and Text Messaging Interventions to Promote Participation in a Food Is Medicine Program Among People Participating in Cardiac Rehabilitation: Human-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Food Is Medicine (FIM) programs integrate interventions such as medically tailored meals or produce prescriptions into clinical care. However, there is limited evidence on how to design these programs to be responsive to the lived experiences of participants to optimize initiation, engagement, and long-term retention. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to develop interventions to promote initiation, engagement, and retention in FIM programs that are responsive to the lived experiences of participants. METHODS: We used a human-centered design approach to engage current and

Survey of Audiology Graduate Programs: Training Students in Tinnitus Management.

Purpose Although tinnitus is highly prevalent among patients receiving audiology services, the extent to which most audiologists are trained in tinnitus management is not well documented. The extent and type of instruction in tinnitus clinical care provided by audiology graduate (AuD) programs is not clear, nor is it known whether training programs are consistent in their recommendations. It is certainly true that widely accepted standards do not exist to ensure that all tinnitus clinical services are supported by adequate scientific evidence, which may result in unsatisfactory outcomes and un

Melodic Intonation Therapy: present controversies and future opportunities.

This article describes the state of the art of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), a structured aphasia therapy program using the melodic aspects of language (intonation, rhythm, and stress) to improve language production. MIT was developed in the 1970s and is still used worldwide. Nevertheless, we argue that many questions crucial for the clinical application of MIT are still unanswered. First, a review of MIT effect studies is presented showing that evidence from well-designed group studies is still lacking. It is also unclear which aspects of MIT contribute most to its therapeutic effect and

CHALLENGING THE ORAL-ONLY NARRATIVE: ENHANCING EARLY SIGNED INPUT FOR DEAF CHILDREN WITH HEARING PARENTS.

Learning a language is, at its core, a process of noticing patterns in the language input surrounding the learner. Although many of these language patterns are complex and difficult for adult speakers/signers to recognize, infants are able to find and learn them from the youngest age, without explicit instruction. However, this impressive feat is dependent on children's early access to ample and well-formed input that displays the regular patterns of natural language. Such input is far from guaranteed for the great majority of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children, leading to well-documented

Retrieval, automaticity, vocabulary elaboration, orthography (RAVE-O): a comprehensive, fluency-based reading intervention program.

The most important implication of the double-deficit hypothesis (Wolf & Bowers, in this issue) concerns a new emphasis on fluency and automaticity in intervention for children with developmental reading disabilities. The RAVE-O (Retrieval, Automaticity, Vocabulary Elaboration, Orthography) program is an experimental, fluency-based approach to reading intervention that is designed to accompany a phonological analysis program. In an effort to address multiple possible sources of dysfluency in readers with disabilities, the program involves comprehensive emphases both on fluency in word attack, w

All Work and All Play: Participation in Leisure Activities in Academically Focused Afterschool Programming Is Linked to Better Math Grades.

Designed to improve outcomes for children from high-poverty, low-performing schools, the federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program emphasizes academic outcomes. We examined the effects of participation in academic and leisure activities in Michigan 21st CCLC programs on English language arts (ELA) and mathematics grades among seventh- and eighth-grade students. Leisure activities were defined as any nonacademic activity: recreation and social time, physical movement, youth development, arts, and health and nutrition. Results showed that male students, low-income s

Evaluating the Feasibility and Preliminary Outcomes of a Culturally Adapted Caregiver-Mediated Early Language and Literacy Intervention Delivered Within a Latino/a Community Nonprofit.

PURPOSE: Caregiver-mediated interventions may be particularly well suited to support the communication and early literacy development of Latino children. However, few interventions have been adapted and/or implemented for the Latino community. The present study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of a culturally adapted caregiver-mediated early language intervention within a Latino-serving community nonprofit. METHOD: The current study used a community-partnered, prospective design to evaluate child and caregiver outcomes after participating in virtual or in-person inte

Barriers and Facilitators to Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings for Hispanic Women in a Rural State.

INTRODUCTION: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Division of Cancer Prevention of Control administer the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP), designed to increase early detection of cancers among low-income uninsured and underinsured women. However, rates of cancer diagnosis and survivorship differ among women of different ethnicities. We investigated two questions: 1) what are the potential barriers and facilitators for women to complete recommended breast and cervical cancer screenings, and 2) are the barriers and facilitators diffe

A study on the association of functional hearing behaviors with semantics, morphology and syntax in cochlear-implanted preschool children.

OBJECTIVES: Monitoring children's development of auditory perception, speech and language after implant programming is critical to post-implantation success. Most of the time, it is not possible to perform an evaluation in clinical conditions, and the tests administered may not provide adequate data on children's everyday functional hearing skills. Therefore, administration of functional hearing measures alongside clinical tests will present supplementary data as to both language development and functional hearing performance of children. In addition, determining demographic and environmental

Parental Roles in Language Intervention: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Children with language delays (LDs) or language disorders face persistent challenges in their development. Speech and language therapy is vital, and within it, parental involvement is recognized as a key factor in therapeutic success. Although many parent-implemented interventions exist, little is known about the specific roles parents assume, particularly across different diagnostic groups: LD, developmental language disorder (DLD), and language disorder associated with other conditions (LD + X). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review and synthesize evidence on parental r

Assessing childhood impact: Virtual and in-person counseling for children's language development challenges.

In recent years, family counseling programs have grown significantly. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a counseling program designed for Late Talkers (LT) or children with Development Language Disorder (DLD) aged 3-6. It also seeks to analyze the differences between its implementation in virtual and in-person settings and to gather the opinions of speech therapists and families about the program. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was employed with two groups, each consisting of 17 children, totaling 34 children: one in an in-person setting and the other in

Auditory cognition lab: a music therapy and speech-language pathology co-treatment for military-connected populations with auditory and cognitive impairment.

Military personnel are particularly at risk for auditory processing difficulties as their training, occupational, and combat experiences increase the likelihood of long-term damage to the auditory system as well as negatively impact physical, psychological, cognitive, and sensory functioning. This article introduces a music therapy and speech-language pathology co-treatment program, Auditory Cognition Lab (ACL), that treats auditory and cognitive deficits in military-connected populations (service members, veterans) with traumatic brain injury (TBI). ACL addresses auditory discrimination, temp
