Social experiences of people living with Parkinson's disease in Ireland: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, compromising people with PD's (PwP) quality of life and psychological well-being, which may be compounded by stigma. We sought to explore the social experiences of PwP in Ireland, including the role of stigma. METHODS: Twenty-one people with PD were recruited through purposeful and snowball sampling. Data were collected through 30-50 min face-to-face or virtual semi-structured interviews. The interview explored PwP's symptoms, psychosocial experiences, and support needed in th

The Planned Alternating Pathways: a flexible protocol for working with anorexic and bulimic adolescents and their families.

The article presents the Planned Alternating Pathways, a flexible systemic protocol structured into four phases for working with adolescent with anorexia and bulimia and their families. Largely inspired by the Family Semantic Polarity Theory, it maintains the assumption of pioneering systemic approaches that anorexia and bulimia are coping strategies, albeit very dangerous. The protocol aims to empower the family as a whole. Its main purpose is to change the positions of the patient and the family members who feel and/or are considered to be at a disadvantage, while reducing internal competiti

Personalized treatment - which interaction ingredients should be focused to capture the unconscious.

A recent meta-analysis revealed that mental health and baseline psychological impairment affect the quality of life and outcomes in different chronic conditions. Implementing mental health care in physical care services is still insufficient. Thus, interdisciplinary communication across treatment providers is essential. The standardized language provided by the diagnostic statistical manual favors a clear conceptualization. However, this approach might not focus on the individual, as thinking in categories might impede recognizing the continuum from healthy to diseased. Psychoanalytic theory i

"Will they be good enough parents?": Ethical dilemmas, views, and decisions among assisted reproductive technology (ART) providers.

BACKGROUND: Many adults may make less-than-ideal parents, but important ethical questions arise concerning whether assisted reproductive technology (ART) providers should thus ever refuse treatment to certain patients, and if so, when, and how to decide. METHODS: In-depth interviews of approximately 1 hour each were conducted with 27 ART providers (17 physicians, and 10 other health providers). RESULTS: Clinicians often struggle with whether to attempt to assess and predict patients' potential future parenting abilities, and if so, how, and how to proceed if doubts arise. Providers face prof

The Smart Therapy Model: a Fourth Wave framework for assessment-driven, integrative multimodal biopsychosocial psychotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Despite decades of psychotherapy research yielding over 100 empirically supported treatment protocols, clinical practice continues to face persistent challenges, including high dropout rates averaging 15-20% in controlled settings and widespread treatment resistance. The central tension is the "research-practice gap": whereas research validates singular, manualized protocols, clinicians predominantly operate eclectically. Critically, the field lacks a standardized framework to guide how clinicians should select and sequence interventions-not merely which protocols exist. Emerging

The development and psychometric evaluation of FABIANA-checklist: a scale to assess factors influencing treatment initiation in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: A long duration of untreated illness (DUI) is an unfavorable prognostic factor in anorexia nervosa (AN) and is associated with chronic illness progression. Although previous preventive measures aimed at reducing DUI and thus improving short- and long-term treatment outcomes have been partially successful, a better understanding of the factors involved in the sensitive phase prior to treatment initiation is needed. To date, there is no validated instrument available to assess these factors specifically for patients with AN. The FABIANA-project (Facilitators and barriers in anorexia

Neural and autonomic regulation during brief mindfulness and relaxation interventions in clinical populations: a multimodal MEG study protocol.

UNLABELLED: Mental disorders pose a major and growing challenge for health care systems worldwide, marked by persistent treatment gaps and limited access to psychotherapeutic care. Mind-body interventions such as mindfulness and relaxation practices are widely used in clinical contexts as low-threshold strategies to support stress regulation and psychological well-being. Despite their broad application, the mechanisms underlying their acute effects remain insufficiently understood, particularly regarding brain-body interactions. This study protocol describes a prospective multimodal investigat

Management of borderline personality disorder: a review of psychotherapeutic approaches.

There are currently three major psychotherapeutic approaches to the management of borderline personality disorder (BPD): the psychodynamic, the cognitive-behavioral, and the supportive. There are special varieties within each: e.g., transference-focused psychotherapy (psychodynamic) or dialectic behavioral therapy (cognitive-behavioral). Though differing in basic conceptions and in methodology, all approaches aim at the amelioration of both the symptom-aspects that dominate the clinical picture at the outset, and the personality difficulties that remain apparent after the symptoms have been al

A randomised waitlist-controlled trial protocol for examining the efficacy of a nature-based intervention (angling) for military veterans and emergency service personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severely debilitating psychological condition that can affect one's capacity to work and well-being. Nature-based interventions (NBI) offer a unique avenue for treatment without the typical barriers current psychotherapeutic treatments create for veterans and emergency service personnel (ESP). Data from a pilot study involving military veterans suggests angling as one such NBI, but large-scale robust experimental work is required to assess the causal impact of NBIs. We will therefore conduct a full-scale randomised controlled trial powered

The conceptual framework for the therapeutic approach used in phase 3 trials of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD.

Results from multiple recent studies support further evaluation of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in conjunction with psychotherapy (i.e., MDMA-Assisted Therapy) in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In two Phase 3 trials, MDMA-Assisted Therapy comprised a short-term, intensive psychotherapy that included three sessions directly facilitated by MDMA (referred to as "experimental sessions"), as well as a number of non-drug psychotherapy sessions. This treatment model aimed to harness the potential of MDMA to facilitate recall and processing of traumatic memories, a

Drawing the Line Between Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia.

The schizo-obsessive spectrum has been a central focus of interest and research within the scientific community in mental health. The increased comorbidity of schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) appears to be considerably higher than previously expected, with more recent studies suggesting growing prevalence rates. Despite this phenomenon, OCS are not considered primary manifestations of schizophrenia and are therefore not usually explored in these patients. The concept of schizo-obsessiveness mostly emerged in the 1990s, progressing int

Immediate help through group therapy for patients with somatic diseases and depressive or adjustment disorders in outpatient care: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: One in three people with a chronic somatic disease suffer from a comorbid mental disorder. Most common comorbidities are depressive, anxiety and adjustment disorders. These lead to an increase in morbidity and mortality, and a deterioration of quality of life and healthcare costs. Treatment of mental disorders is of great importance, but the waiting time for outpatient individual psychotherapy can be up to six months in Germany. Group therapy has comparable treatment effects and is considerably more economic than individual therapy; however, it is still almost unused in the outpati

LGBTQIA+ sexual health: a SITCC clinical framework for integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy and sexual medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience significant sexual health disparities shaped by minority stress processes, trauma exposure, mental health burden, and historically heteronormative and cisnormative clinical frameworks. Although international guidelines, standards of care, and professional guidance documents increasingly endorse affirmative and evidence-informed care, their integration into routine sexual medicine and psychotherapeutic practice remains inconsistent, particularly in the assessment and clinical management of sexual dysfunctions in LGBTQIA+

[The relationship between depression, anxiety and heart disease - a psychosomatic challenge].

BACKGROUND: Depressive and cardiological disorders present a major comorbidity. Their manifold interrelations may be best analysed within a biopsychosocial model of disease. METHODS: A systematic research was done on empirical studies published during the last 15 years and dealing with epidemiological, etiopathogenetic and therapeutic dimensions of the comorbidity of depression, anxiety and heart disease. RESULTS: From an epidemiological perspective recurrent depressions are associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary heart disease. Depressive disorders play a major role in tr

Poisoning in the elderly. Epidemiological, clinical and management considerations.

Poisoning is a significant problem in the elderly. The majority of poisonings in older people are unintentional and may result from dementia and confusion, improper use of the product, improper storage or mistaken identities. Depression is also common in the elderly and suicide attempts are more likely to be successful in this age group. The elderly patient's recuperative abilities may be inadequate as a result of numerous factors including impaired hepatic or renal function as well as chronic disease processes. General management of poisoning in the elderly parallels management of younger adu

Advantages and disadvantages of online psychotherapy and decisions to use it in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic - analysis of mediation variables.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, online psychotherapy has gained importance as a flexible, cost-effective and widely available alternative to face-to-face therapy. Existing research suggests that psychotherapists see both the advantages and potential limitations of this form of work. It can be assumed that the perceived advantages and disadvantages of online therapy constitute the primary direct factors influencing decisions to adopt this form. However, in the era of the pandemic, it seems important to assess to what extent emotional factors - such as fear of infection or pandemic-related fatigu

Increasing the effectiveness of psychotherapy in routine care through blended therapy with transdiagnostic online modules (PsyTOM): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In blended therapy, face-to-face psychotherapy and Internet-based interventions are combined. Blended therapy may be advantageous for patients and psychotherapists. However, most blended interventions focus on cognitive behavioral therapy or single disorders, making them less suitable for routine care settings. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, we will compare blended therapy and face-to-face therapy in routine care. We intend to randomize 1152 patients nested in 231 psychotherapists in a 1:1 ratio. Patients in the blended therapy group will receive access to a therapeuti

Virtual Reality as a Moderator of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy with the use of psychedelic substances, including psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ketamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), has demonstrated promise in treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, addiction, and treatment-resistant depression. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PP) represents a unique psychopharmacological model that leverages the profound effects of the psychedelic experience. That experience is characterized by strong dependency on two key factors: participant mindset and the therapeutic environment. As such, therape
