Prevalence of Maxillary Sinus Hypoplasia and Silent Sinus Syndrome: A Radiological Cross-Sectional Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH), associated with enophthalmos and hypoglobus in the silent sinus syndrome (SSS), is a poorly studied condition. The real incidence of MSH and SSS in the adult population is not known. Our study aims at estimating the radiological prevalence of MSH and identifying undiagnosed cases of SSS in a retrospective cohort. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective cohort study was performed in adults, without a history of maxillofacial surgery or trauma, undergoing head CT scans. A radiological database of 1012 consecutive scans was reviewed independently by

Silent Sinus Syndrome Secondary to Lymphoma: An Unusual Case With Radiological Evidence of Rapid Progression.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of silent sinus syndrome secondary to malignancy and discuss the pertinent clinical findings. Silent Sinus Syndrome (SSS) refers to a rare, asymptomatic condition whereby occlusion of the maxillary sinus ostium results in gradual resorption of air, creation of negative pressure and collapse of the maxillary walls. METHODS: Review of medical records and literature review using NCBI/PubMed. RESULTS: We describe a case of a 54-year-old gentleman presenting solely with enophthalmos. He had been diagnosed with stage IVa small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL) 1.5 years prio

Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Its Variants.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms involving the anterior skull base, resulting from local invasion from an adjacent anatomical region. The primary sites of origin are most frequently the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, and less often the skin and orbit. Treatment strategies for these tumors have evolved, although management remains challenging due to the proximity to critical structures and their location at the intracranial-extracranial interface. The rarity of these tumors, and limited numbers at any one institution, has meant that most published

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Cavernous Sinus - Otolaryngological Sequelae of Therapy: Case Report.

A 60-year-old woman, otherwise in a good health condition, was first admitted to the hospital with a year-long tingling sensations of the right half of the face, which gradually turned into severe neuralgia corresponding to maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) branches of the right trigeminal nerve. MRI scans of the head revealed an unusual hyperplastic or inflammatory changes along the brain base, cavernous sinus extending toward the pterygopalatine fossa, and lateral pterygoid on the right side. Meningioma was suspected and neuralgia was treated conservatively. About 2 years later, due to seve

Microspheres embolization of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in an adult.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign though locally aggressive, highly vascular tumor primarily affecting adolescent males which has traditionally posed a significant intraoperative challenge during its resection due to the high risk of uncontrollable hemorrhage. Pre-operative angiographic embolization of the major feeding vessels to the tumor has become a valuable, even necessary, tool in the surgical treatment of these lesions. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Our patient was a 32-year-old man with a chief complaint of recurrent left-sided epistaxis for one year, brisk

[Effect of tamoxifen on the treatment of pituitary adenomas with bromocriptine].

Administration of 2-Br- alpha-ergocryptine (bromocriptine = CB-154) in combination with an estrogen-receptor blocking agent tamoxifen were performed in two patients with prolactinoma and non-functioning adenoma, respectively. Case 1 was a 50-year-old male with hyperprolactinemia, impaired pituitary function and visual disorders, in whom a large invasive sellar mass lesion was disclosed by CT scans, which extended supra- and parasellarly and extracranially into paranasal sinuses and pterygopalatine fossa on the left side. As the effect of bromocriptine therapy was partial in tumor size reductio

Sphenopalatine Artery Pseudoaneurysm as a Rare Complication of Le Fort III Advancement in Apert Syndrome.

This report describes an especially rare postoperative pseudoaneurysm of the sphenopalatine artery following midface advancement using Le Fort III in an Apert syndrome patient. The Apert patient referenced in this report was a 13-year-old boy with severe midface hypoplasia, significant obstructive sleep apnea, and Angle Class III malocclusion. The patient underwent a low Le Fort III osteotomy, subsequently followed by gradual anterior distraction with an external halo distractor. One month postoperatively, the patient experienced recurrent, massive blood loss due to unilateral epistaxis. In or

Extracranial primary and secondary meningiomas.

Meningioma is a well-recognized tumour of the central nervous system. However, extracranial non-dural or ectopic meningiomas are rare and in most of the reported cases, meningiomas are diagnosed only after histopathologic examination. Over the last 5 years, the authors have seen three cases. In these case reports, they discuss the salient features of these lesions, which can aid the preoperative diagnosis and management of these patients. One of the cases is a rarity, owing to the extreme extracranial position which allowed the pressure of the tumour abrade the adjacent structures. In one case

Morphometric assessment of greater palatine canal and foramen variations in cleft lip and palate patients using CBCT.

OBJECTIVES: Anatomical variation of the greater palatine canal (GPC) is critical for safe regional anesthesia and posterior maxillary surgery. This study aimed to evaluate GPC anatomy in cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to support safer clinical interventions. METHODS: Anatomical comparisons were performed between CLP patients and non-cleft controls using CBCT scans. Evaluated parameters included greater palatine foramen (GPF) width, linear distances from the GPF to surrounding anatomical landmarks (such as the pterygoid canal (PC), infraorbital f

SMMARTS: An Open Architecture Development Platform for Modular, Mixed, and Augmented Reality Procedural and Interventional Simulators.

INTRODUCTION: Different simulators often share elements, resulting in different laboratories doing redundant work. This can lead to higher development and acquisition costs, proprietary, incompatible technology, lack of interoperability, and large inventories that reduce accessibility to the benefits of simulation. Simulation technology can become more affordable and scalable with open architecture and modular design. We describe the System of Modular Mixed and Augmented Reality Tracking Simulators (SMMARTS) open architecture, rapid development platform for designing and building modular proce

Sphenopalatine ganglion block in primary headaches: An American Headache Society member survey.

BACKGROUND: The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), in the pterygopalatine fossa, is a known current and historical target for therapeutic intervention in headache disorders because of its role in cranial autonomics and vasodilation. There remains an overall lack of well-established SPG treatment protocols, particularly with the advent of newer commercial devices. METHODS: A 22 multiple-choice question survey was created to evaluate clinical practice patterns with SPG block and sent to members of the American Headache Society (AHS). Questions focused on determining indications, preferred applicato

Location and frequency of lesions in patients with IgG4-related ophthalmic diseases.

BACKGROUND: It is well-known that the lacrimal gland (LG) may be affected in IgG4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4ROD). Recently, IgG4-related ophthalmic lesions other than those of the lacrimal gland have been reported. However, no study to date has revealed the details of these lesions. This study was conducted to evaluate the location and frequency of lesions found in conjunction with IgG4ROD using radiological imaging. METHODS: Radiological images and clinical records of 65 patients collected from seven institutions in Japan were reviewed retrospectively. All patients had been pathologica

University of Washington Quality of Life subdomain outcomes after treatment of sinonasal malignancy: A prospective, multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Sinonasal malignancies (SNMs) adversely impact patients' quality of life (QOL) and are frequently identified at an advanced stage. Because these tumors are rare, there are few studies that examine the specific QOL areas that are impacted. This knowledge would help improve the care of these patients. METHODS: In this prospective, multi-institutional study, 273 patients with SNMs who underwent definitive treatment with curative intent were evaluated. We used the University of Washington Quality of Life (UWQOL) instrument over 5 years from diagnosis to identify demographic, treatment, a
