PURPOSE: An individual's reading ability cannot be reliably predicted from his/her letter acuity, contrast sensitivity, and visual field extent. We developed a set of Chinese reading acuity charts (C-READ) to assess the reading ability of Chinese readers, based on the collective wisdom of previously published reading acuity charts, especially the MNRead and the Radner Reading Charts.
METHODS: The C-READ consists of three charts. Each consists sixteen 12-character simplified Chinese sentences crafted from first- to third-grade textbooks. One hundred eighteen native Chinese-speaking college stu

The genetic effects on specific behavioral phenotypes are putatively mediated by specific neural functions. It remains unexplored how the axon-guidance-receptor gene ROBO1 influences reading performance through the neural system despite the identification of ROBO1 as a susceptibility gene for dyslexia. To address this issue, the present study recruited a group of children with a wide range of reading abilities. Two previously identified reading-related ROBO1 polymorphisms were genotyped, and diffusion and structural MRI were acquired to measure the fiber microstructure of the corpus callosum (

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia affects 5%-8% of the population of the Western world. While reading, different eye movements are required. Compared to other persons, dyslexics have more and longer fixations, shorter saccade amplitude, a higher percentage of regression, and more fixation disparity when reading. In non-reading situations, dyslexics do not have more binocular problems than others. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether computerized orthoptic vergence training could improve reading ability for dyslexic children.
METHODS: The study was conducted at Ängkärrskolan, Solna, an e

This editorial provides a summary of the highlights from 11 new papers that have been published in a special issue of Brain and Language on the neurobiology of reading. The topics investigate reading mechanisms in both adults and children. Several of the findings illustrate how responses in the left ventral occipito-temporal cortex, and other reading areas, change with learning, expertise and the task: In the early stages of reading acquisition, learning/expertise increases activation in reading areas as well as in an attentionally-controlled, learning circuit. In later stages, expertise and e

Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) display an extremely wide variety of skills in the field of literacy, and the ability to read and write are central learning aims in the education of students with ID. It is vital to gain detailed knowledge on the literacy skills of students with ID in order to plan instruction, create learning environments, implement educational policies or funding models and specify future fields of research. However, there has been little research into the prevalence and variation of their reading skills. The present study assessed the reading stages of 1629 scho

The plantar surface of the foot has highly specialized, densely adherent, glabrous skin, making functional replacement difficult. Glabrous skin defects should be replaced with similar skin to restore function and aesthetics. An innovative technique, the "reading man flap," was developed for closure of circular skin defects. At locations such as the face, trunk, thigh, and calf, the "reading man" procedure provides tension-free closure with minimal additional healthy skin excision, and it does not cause "dog ear" formation. The potential exists for replacement of plantar defects with skin of th

Children with dyslexia may read poorly for several reasons. Recent research suggests that in addition to skills with language sounds, visual-spatial attention may be an important predictor of reading abilities.

This study investigated the electrophysiological responses to single-letter reading in children (reading-related potentials) and explored the morphological differences between covert and overt reading conditions. Sixty-five healthy children (6-13 years) participated in this study. Reading-related potentials were recorded during visual stimulation with single Italian alphabetic letters. Stimuli were displayed for 5 ms either automatically at a randomly jittered time lag or upon voluntary self-paced button press by children. In the covert conditions, children had to passively look at single lett

This current study introduced a new method to investigate the prevalence and correlates of significant imbalances in the relative accuracy with which eighth-graders read nonwords (e.g., prauma) and exception words (e.g., vaccine). Substantial proportions of students showed imbalanced word-reading profiles, but these were not strongly tied to differences in reading and spelling achievement. Of the students without reading difficulties, 19% had imbalanced word-reading profiles favoring exception words and 17% had imbalanced word-reading profiles favoring nonwords. Of the poor readers, 39% met th

The present findings are drawn from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia (JLD), in which approximately 100 children with familial risk of dyslexia and 100 control children have been followed from birth. In this paper we report data on the reading development of the JLD children and their classmates, a total of 1,750 children from four measurement points during the first two school years. In the total sample, we examined whether heterogeneous developmental paths can be identified based on profiles of word recognition and reading comprehension. Secondly, we studied what kind of early lan

Performance on perceptual tasks requiring the discrimination of brief, temporally proximate or temporally varying sensory stimuli (temporal processing tasks) is impaired in some individuals with developmental language disorder and/or dyslexia. Little is known about how these temporal processes in perception develop and how they relate to language and reading performance in the normal population. The present study examined performance on 8 temporal processing tasks and 5 language/reading tasks in 120 unselected readers who varied in age over a range in which reading and phonological awareness w

In my talk, I reviewed studies on the neural substrates of Kanji vs. Kana, two types of Japanese characters, written since the 1980s. More Specifically, I reviewed the development of the studies on (1) Kanji and Kana in pure alexia/agraphia, (2) alexia with agraphia of Kanji and (3) 'musical letters' vs. 'literary letters', and reported new findings from those studies. In the 1980s, we frequently studied patients with partial callosal lesions and those with pure alexia, and many of the studies were on the neural substrates of Kanji vs. Kana. Later, we discovered cases of alexia with agraphia o

This commentary addresses issues concerning (a) the measurement of numbers, letters, and words versus cognitive processes in early screening batteries, and (b) comorbid associations of reading, math, and attention disorders. Based on reading prediction studies, assessments that include numbers should be most predictive of math outcomes. However, given the comorbid association of reading, math, and attention disorders, measures sensitive to reading and attention difficulties may be necessary in early screening batteries for math disabilities.

We present a new method for the analysis of reading eye movements based on the methods of nonlinear dynamics. In this preliminary study, the eye movements of normal and abnormal readers were analyzed for evidence of chaotic, nonlinear dynamical behavior. Both power spectral density analysis and fractal dimension determination showed evidence of nonlinearity as manifest in chaotic behavior. The computed fractal dimension of the system's presumed attractor seemed directly related to qualitative assessment of reading ability. Representative subjects did not differ in a similar analysis of pursuit

The heritable nature of reading disability has been well documented (DeFries & Alarcón, 1996), and possible abnormalities of brain structures have been associated with the disorder (Filipek, 1995). However, the etiology of individual differences in morphological brain measures has not been examined extensively. The purpose of this study was to apply behavioral genetic methods to assess the etiology of individual differences in neuroanatomical structures. Measures of reading performance, cognitive ability, and magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 25 monozygotic (MZ) and 23 same-s

BACKGROUND: Near tasks have been associated with binocular stress to induce myopia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of accommodation on reading-induced near heterophoria. METHODS: We measured the near heterophoria of 22 young adults before and after 30 minutes of reading. The reading task comprised a column of local English newsletter studied monocularly at 33 cm. One of three addition lenses (that is, 0.00 D, +1.50 D and +3.00 D) was randomly incorporated into the optical prescription. The difference in near heterophoria between the pre- and post-reading task was recorded

Hyperlexia is characterized by advanced word-recognition skills in individuals who otherwise have pronounced cognitive, social, and linguistic handicaps. Language, word recognition, and reading-comprehension skills are reviewed to clarify the nature and core deficits associated with the disorder. It is concluded that hyperlexia should be viewed as part of the normal variation in reading skills, which are themselves associated with individual differences in phonological, orthographic, and semantic processing, short-term memory, and print exposure. A compulsive preoccupation with reading may als
