Using the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) as a Case Study to Illustrate the Development of Artificial Breeding Technology in Marsupials: an Update.

The successful development and application of an assisted breeding program in any animal relies primarily on a thorough understanding of the fundamental reproductive biology (anatomy, physiology and behaviour) of the species in question. Surely, the ultimate goal and greatest hallmark of such a program is the efficacious establishment of a series of reliable techniques that facilitate the reproductive and genetic management of fragmented populations, both in captivity and in the wild. Such an achievement is all that more challenging when knowledge of the reproductive biology of that species is

Long-term fiscal implications of funding assisted reproduction: a generational accounting model for Spain.

The aim of this study was to assess the lifetime economic benefits of assisted reproduction in Spain by calculating the return on this investment. We developed a generational accounting model that simulates the flow of taxes paid by the individual, minus direct government transfers received over the individual's lifetime. The difference between discounted transfers and taxes minus the cost of either IVF or artificial insemination (AI) equals the net fiscal contribution (NFC) of a child conceived through assisted reproduction. We conducted sensitivity analysis to test the robustness of our resu

The particular problems of ambulatory controlled ovarian stimulation.

The impact of infertility treatments on the frequency of multiple pregnancies in France was investigated using data on total multiple deliveries and multiple deliveries from assisted reproduction and intrauterine insemination (IUI) between 1994 and 2004, and by making assumptions about the expected rate of natural multiple deliveries. During this period, 72.0% of multiple deliveries were the result of infertility treatments. The rate of triplet delivery after assisted reproduction decreased by 50% between 2000 and 2004, despite a large increase in deliveries resulting from assisted reproductio

Andrology laboratory techniques for micro-TESE/IVF/ICSI: a narrative review.

Since the early days of assisted reproductive technology (ART), the importance of sperm processing, employed to separate the motile, morphologically normal sperm from the semen, has been shown to be beneficial. The aim of the semen processing technique has been to remove seminal plasma and facilitate capacitation. Additionally, the presence of leukocytes, bacteria, and dead spermatozoa has been shown to be detrimental as it may cause oxidative stress that has an adverse effect on oocyte fertilization and embryo development. Hence, removal of leukocytes, bacteria, and dead spermatozoa is an imp

Live births achieved via IVF are increased by improvements in air quality and laboratory environment.

Infertility is a common disease, which causes many couples to seek treatment with assisted reproduction techniques. Many factors contribute to successful assisted reproduction technique outcomes. One important factor is laboratory environment and air quality. Our facility had the unique opportunity to compare consecutively used, but separate assisted reproduction technique laboratories, as a result of a required move. Environmental conditions were improved by strategic engineering designs. All other aspects of the IVF laboratory, including equipment, physicians, embryologists, nursing staff an

Between demographic targets and personal desire: lived experiences of infertility.

Infertility is a globally prevalent disease affecting approximately 1 in 6 people at some stage in their lives. Despite its profound personal significance, access to fertility care remains uneven, shaped by legal, financial, cultural and infrastructural barriers. While declining fertility rates have prompted some policymakers to frame medically assisted reproduction within demographic strategies, we argue that fertility care must be fundamentally understood as a matter of individual rights, reproductive autonomy and self‑fulfilment. International human rights instruments increasingly recognize

Silent Signals: The Expanding Role of Cell-Free DNA in Women's Health, Pregnancy, and Reproductive Medicine.

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is an emerging biomarker detectable in various bodily fluids, with promising implications across a wide range of clinical domains. Its minimally invasive nature, short half-life, and ability to reflect tissue-specific genetic and epigenetic alterations position cfDNA as a key tool in women's health diagnostics. This narrative review aims to explore the biological characteristics, release mechanisms, and clinical utility of cfDNA in gynecological cancers, pregnancy-related disorders, and assisted reproductive technologies (ART), highlighting current applications, benefits,

PFAS exposure and reproductive dysfunction: implications for outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies.

The high stability and bioaccumulation potential of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have led to their widespread environmental presence and raised concerns about human health exposure through multiple pathways. In particular, PFAS exposure during assisted reproductive technology (ART) has attracted increasing attention from the scientific community. Current evidence indicates that PFAS may be associated with diminished fertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and impaired fetal health, although the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely elucidated. Emerging studies suggest that the

Reproductive Health and Assisted Conception in Celiac Disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity: A Narrative Review.

The increasing use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) globally, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), has highlighted the pressing need to determine the modifiable factors affecting the success of implantation and the outcomes of early pregnancy. Scientific interest in the role of nutrition in fertility is growing, but outside of celiac disease, little is known about gluten, a dietary protein with immunogenic and inflammatory properties. With an emphasis on ART results, this narrative review summarizes the most recent data regarding the pos

Semen Microbiome, Male Infertility, and Reproductive Health.

The semen microbiome, once believed to be sterile, is now recognized as a dynamic ecosystem containing a diverse range of microorganisms with potential implications for male fertility and reproductive health. We aimed to examine the relationship between the semen microbiome, male infertility, and reproductive outcomes, highlighting the transformative role of next generation sequencing techniques and bioinformatics in exploring this intricate interaction, and we present a critical review of the published literature on this issue. Current evidence suggests a complex association between the compo

Redirecting reproductive immunology research toward pregnancy as a period of temporary immune tolerance.

Referring to two recent publications, we here propose that clinical reproductive immunology has for decades stagnated because reproductive medicine, including assisted reproduction (AR), has failed to accept embryo implantation as an immune system-driven process, dependent on establishment of maternal tolerance toward the implanting fetal semi-allograft (and complete allograft in cases of oocyte donation). Pregnancy represents a biologically unique period of temporary (to the period of gestation restricted) tolerance, otherwise only known in association with parasitic infections. Rather than i

Reproductive Pathways Across the Lifespan and Their Mental Health Impacts.

Reproductive health unfolds across the lifespan, and individuals may move through diverse pathways - including infertility, chronic gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis, pregnancy complications, assisted reproduction or gestational carriage. These experiences can heighten vulnerability to new-onset or recurrent mental illness. Using population-based ICES data, our recent work demonstrates that mental health risks arise across the entire reproductive trajectory. Integrating mental health support within fertility care, gynecology, obstetrics and primary care is essential for equitable an

The role of extracellular vesicles in animal reproduction.

Infertility affects approximately one in six couples worldwide and remains a multifactorial condition influenced by genetic, physiological, and environmental factors. Despite remarkable advances in assisted reproductive technologies (ART), current therapeutic approaches often fail to address the underlying molecular mechanisms contributing to infertility. In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as key mediators of intercellular communication, capable of transferring bioactive molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids between cells within the reproductive system.

Reproductive health in Turner syndrome: A narrative review.

Turner syndrome (TS), a common chromosomal abnormality affecting females, is associated with partial or complete loss of the second sex chromosome. Although the classic karyotype is 45, X, the detection of mosaic TS is increasing. TS is a multi-system disorder with significant endocrine, cardiovascular and reproductive impacts. Accelerated ovarian follicular loss leads to primary amenorrhoea or premature ovarian insufficiency and infertility. Early diagnosis and counselling regarding hormone replacement therapy and future reproductive capacity, including fertility preservation, are essential t
