Food allergy represents a highly up-to-date and continually increasing problem of modern man. Although being present in all ages, it most often occures in children aged up to three years. Sensitization most often occurs by a direct way, but it is also possible to be caused by mother's milk, and even transplacentally. Predisposition of inadequate immune response to antigen stimulation, reaginic or nonreaginic, is of non-selective character so that food allergy is often multiple and to a high rate associated with inhalation and/or contact hypersensitivity. Also, due to antigen closeness of some

Saxitoxin (STX), a principal phycotoxin contributing to paralytic shellfish poisoning, is largely produced by marine microalgae of the genus Alexandrium. This toxin affects a wide range of species, inducing massive deaths in fish and other marine species. However, marine bivalves can resist and accumulate paralytic shellfish poisons. Despite numerous studies on the impact of STX in marine bivalves, knowledge regarding STX recognition at molecular level by benthic species remains scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify novel genes that interact with STX in the Chilean mussel My

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maternal fish consumption during pregnancy might influence the fetal immune system through anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids, and might affect the risks of childhood asthma and atopy. In Generation R, a prospective cohort study in the Netherlands, we examined the associations of first trimester fish consumption with childhood wheezing and eczema in the first 4 years of life.
METHODS: In total, 2976 mothers completed a 293-item semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire covering dietary intake in the first trimester. The occurrence of wheezing and eczem

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic diseases is increasing worldwide, but the reasons are not well understood. Previous studies suggest that this trend might be associated with lifestyle and urbanization.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe patterns of sensitization and allergic disease in an unselected agricultural Chinese population.
METHODS: The data were derived from a community-based twin study in Anqing, China. Skin prick tests were performed to foods and aeroallergens. Atopy was defined as sensitization to 1 or more allergens. Allergic disease was ascertained by means of self-report.

BACKGROUND: There is uncertainty about the prevalence of food allergy in communities.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of food allergy by performing a meta-analysis according to the method of assessment used.
METHODS: The foods assessed were cow's milk, hen's egg, peanut, fish, shellfish, and an overall estimate of food allergy. We summarized the information in 5 categories: self-reported symptoms, specific IgE positive, specific skin prick test positive, symptoms combined with sensitization, and food challenge studies. We systematically searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for publications since

BACKGROUND: Botulism caused by type F botulinum toxin accounts for less than 0.1% of all human botulism cases and is rarely reported in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old woman presented to an emergency department complaining of blurred vision, difficulty focusing, and dysphagia. The treating physician initially considered the possibility of paralytic shellfish poisoning due to a report of shellfish ingestion, which was later determined to be frozen shrimp and a can of tuna, but no gastroenteritis or paresthesias were present. During the emergency department observation, the patient d

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are widely distributed neurotoxins that accumulate and transform in bivalves, but the metabolic mechanisms after exposure of Azumapecten farreri (A. farreri) to PSTs remain unknown. To verify the phase I (cytochrome P450, CYP450)-II (glutathione S-transferase, GST)-III (ABC transport) metabolic genes for PSTs, we used RNA interference (RNAi) to silence target genes (CYP46A1, GSTM1, and ABCF2), measured PSTs content, and performed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) screening. Injection of small interfering RNA (siRNA) fragments into the scallop adductor muscl

Dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum is an important producer of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), including a novel group of hydroxybenzoate derivatives named GC toxins. In the East China Sea, G. catenatum has been considered as the causative agent for several paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) episodes, yet the knowledge on their toxin production was still quite limited. In this study, toxins produced by a strain of G. catenatum (MEL11) isolated from the East China Sea were determined, using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Changes

Dietary intake is the most important route of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exposure and seafood is the major dietary component for the coastal populations. It is, therefore, an urgent need to assess the levels of PCBs in seafood. A comprehensive congener-specific evaluation of PCBs was carried out for the first time in Bangladesh. All 209 congeners of PCBs in 48 seafood samples (5 finfish and 2 shellfish species) collected in winter and summer of 2015 were measured by GC-MS/MS. Regardless of season and site, the ∑PCBs (ng/g wet weight) in finfish and shellfish were in the range of 6.4-86.2

PTX-2 is a marine biotoxin frequently found in shellfish that can lead to food intoxication in humans. Information regarding PTX-2 metabolism is scarce, and little is known of its effect on xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes (XME) or its molecular pathways. The aim of this study was consequently to examine PTX-2 Phase I metabolism using rat and human liver S9 fractions, and also to assess the capability of PTX-2: (i) to modulate the gene expression of a panel of Phase I (CYP450) and II (UGT, SULT, NAT, and GST) enzymes, as well as the Phase III or 0 (ABC and SLCO) transporters in the human hepati

BACKGROUND: Allergy to crustacean shellfish is one of the most common IgE-mediated food allergies, and tropomyosin has been identified as the major allergen. However, not all subjects affected by this allergy are IgE-positive to tropomyosin.
AIMS: To evaluate whether sera of patients with shrimp allergy but negative for tropomyosin react to other allergen(s); and to evaluate the role such allergen(s) may play in cross-reactivity between crustaceans and house dust mites (HDMs).
METHODS: Three different pools of sera-one from subjects with shellfish allergy and HDMs positivity, but negative fo

Attempts were made to elucidate the different responses of shellfish to paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) and the PSP donor Alexandrium minutum T1. Five species of edible bivalves (Crassostrea gigas, Meretrix lusoria, Mytilus edulis, Ruditapes philippinarum, and Soletellina diphos) were collected and examined for susceptibility to PSP and PSP donor. It was determined that all five bivalves had low susceptibility to PSP following an intramuscular injection (> 300 MU/20 g). The abnormal effects on bivalves were species-specific and varied with the concentration of A. minutum T1. Judging from the

We review the spatial distribution of toxic marine microalgal species and the impacts of all types of harmful algal events (Harmful Algal Blooms, HABs) in the Mediterranean Sea (MS), including the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, coastal lagoons and transitional waters, based on two databases compiled in the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS). Eighty-four potentially toxic species have been detected in the MS (2,350 records), of which 16 described from these waters between 1860 and 2014 and a few suspected to have been introduced. More than half of these species (46) produce toxins th

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), often referred to as the 'puffer fish' poison, is a marine toxin and it has been identified as the agent responsible for many food poisoning incidents around the world. It is a neurotoxin that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, resulting in respiratory paralysis and even death in severe cases. It is known to occur in many different species of fish and other organisms. The toxin is mainly found in the Southeast Asia region. Worryingly, TTX is starting to appear in European waters. It is suspected that this is a consequence of Lessepsian migration, also known as the Erythr

Saxitoxin (STX) is among the most potent toxins known, is classified as a chemical weapon, and is the archetype of the paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) family produced by marine and freshwater harmful algal blooms (HAB). STX causes paralysis and death through inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs), has no antidote, and poses a public health and commercial fishing threat due to its accumulation in seafood and increasing HAB occurrences. Although STX is lethal to varied vertebrates, including humans, certain frogs resist STX poisoning. This phenotype is thought to depend on soluble to

Maintaining the survival and quality of Litopenaeus vannamei (L. vannamei) in household settings proves particularly challenging. This study aimed to explore a critical temperature and minimal-water preservation method with supporting equipment, and investigate its effects on the survival, physicochemical properties, and intestinal microbial responses of L. vannamei during preservation. Using single-factor experiments and machine learning design, optimal parameters were identified: 7.5 °C, 27 ‰ salinity, and 2 °C/h cooling rate, which achieved a 90.4 % survival rate over 12 h. Texture profile

In the Pacific Northwest, blooms of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia (PN) sometimes produce domoic acid, a neurotoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning, leading to a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) event. The Pacific Northwest (PNW) HAB Bulletin project, a partnership between academic, government, and tribal stakeholders, uses a combination of beach and offshore monitoring data and ocean forecast modeling to better understand the formation, evolution, and transport of HABs in this region. This project produces periodic Bulletins to inform local stakeholders of current and forecasted conditions. The

Dinophysis acuta produces diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTX). It blooms in thermally-stratified shelf waters in late summer in temperate to cold temperate latitudes. Despite its major contribution to shellfish harvesting bans, little effort has been devoted to study its population dynamics in Chilean Patagonia. In 2017-2018, mesoscale distribution of harmful algal species (75 monitoring stations) revealed the initiation (late spring) and seasonal growth of a dense D. acuta population in the Aysén region, with maximal values at Puyuhuapi Fjord (PF). Many phytoplankton species, including many harmful algal bloom (HAB) species, survive long periods between blooms through formation of benthic resting stages. Because they are crucial to the persistence of these species and the initiation of new blooms, the physiology of benthic stages must be considered to accurately predict responses to climate warming and associated environmental changes. The benthic stages of dinoflagellates, called resting cysts, germinate in response to the combination of favorable temperature, oxygen-availability, and release from dormancy. The latter is a mechanism tha
