In this work, we investigated cases of birth of calves with congenital defects in a farm in Southern Brazil. Only calves born from heifers were affected, and the disease occurred in both crossbred and purebred calves. Three necropsies were performed, tissues were collected for histopathology, and samples of liver of calves, blood serum, and food provided for cows and heifers were collected to quantify the levels of the minerals: manganese, copper, and zinc. The calves were born weak, with disproportionate dwarfism, limb deformities, and enlarged joints. Heads were shortened and domed. Long bon

In the past decades, food products and beverages made from gluten-free cereals were initially created for certain groups of people who experience gluten-related disorders such as wheat allergies, gluten ataxia, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and the most well-known, celiac disease. Nowadays, the consumption of gluten-free products is not only restricted to targeted groups, but it has become a food trend for normal consumers, especially in countries such as the UK, the US, and some European countries, who believe that consuming a gluten-free product is a healthier choice compared to normal glut

The sugarcane borer or corn stalk borer, Diatraea Guilding is polyphagous insect pest of many important crops such as corn, sorghum and sugarcane. Losses arising from the attack of Diatraea species have been a serious problem, which may cause loss in sugarcane production around 0.25% in sugar, 0.20% in alcohol and 0.77% of body weight for every 1% infestation and up to 21% in corn production fields. In Brazil, the most commonly reported species are Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) and Diatraea impersonatella (Walker, 1863) (= D. flavipennella). However, multiple other species of Diatraea

The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, Noctuidae, Lepidoptera) is one of the most important crop pests in the Americas, causing significant damage to maize, rice and sorghum. The mechanisms that determine its defences against pathogens are particularly relevant for the development of management and control strategies. We used an in silico approach to identify and characterize pathogen response genes (repat) present in different tissue libraries of S. fugiperda. The analyses revealed complete cDNA for nine repat genes; of these, repat15 and repat39 were found in libraries from a specific tis

To clarify the molecular mechanism that regulates iron (Fe) acquisition in graminaceous plants, a time-course analysis of gene expression during Fe deficiency stress was conducted using a rice 22K oligo-DNA microarray. Twenty-one genes for proteins that function in gene regulation were induced by Fe deficiency. Of these genes, a putative basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor gene, named OsIRO2, was strongly expressed in both roots and shoots during Fe deficiency stress. The expression of OsIRO2 was induced exclusively by Fe deficiency, and not by deficiencies in other metals. Expr

BACKGROUND: Future European Community regulations will require a sensitive and specific assay for measurement of coeliac toxic gluten proteins in foods marketed as gluten-free. To avoid spurious cross reactions with non-toxic proteins, specific antibodies and target antigens are required. A synthetic 19 amino acid peptide of A gliadin has been shown to cause deterioration in the morphology of small intestinal biopsy specimens of coeliac patients in remission.
AIMS: To develop an assay for detection of gluten in foods, based on measurement of a known toxic peptide.
METHODS: A monoclonal antib

Uganda is an agrarian country where farming employs more than 60% of the population. Aflatoxins remain a scourge in the country, unprecedentedly reducing the nutritional and economic value of agricultural foods. This review was sought to synthetize the country's major findings in relation to the mycotoxins' etiology, epidemiology, detection, quantification, exposure assessment, control, and reduction in different matrices. Electronic results indicate that aflatoxins in Uganda are produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus and have been reported in maize, sorghum, sesame, beans, sunflowe

BACKGROUND: Availability of genomewide information on an increasing but still limited number of plants offers the possibility of identifying orthologues, or related genes, in species with major economical impact and complex genomes. In this paper we exploit the recently described CODEHOP primer design and PCR strategy for targeted isolation of homologues in large gene families.
RESULTS: The method was tested with two different objectives. The first was to analyze the evolution of the CYP98 family of cytochrome P450 genes involved in 3-hydroxylation of phenolic compounds and lignification in a

BACKGROUND: 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.27, HPPD), as a key enzyme for tyrosine decomposition, is a highly regarded herbicide target. In this work, a series of cyclohexenone derivatives containing a substituted pyrazole group were designed and synthesized by active fragment splicing method for screening new HPPD inhibitors.
RESULTS: The bioassay results indicated that some target compounds exhibited noticeable inhibitory activity against Capsella bursa-pastoris (CB), Portulaca oleracea (PO), Echinochloa crus-galli (EC) and Setaria viridis (SV). As an outstanding representa

Sand flies belonging to the genus Sergentomyia Franca & Parrot, 1920, are hematophagous insects feeding mostly on reptiles and birds, but some species feed also on mammals including humans. Sergentomyia spp. frequently comprise the vast majority of sand flies trapped along with Phlebotomus spp., the vectors of mammalian leishmaniasis. Within the framework of a project on the ecology and transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in Ethiopia, putative breeding sites of phlebotomine sand flies were studied. Large horizontal sticky traps (LHSTs) covered with sand fly-proof mesh were deployed over cra

The mechanisms underlying fungal resistance to weak acid preservatives remain poorly understood, particularly regarding the roles of membrane transporters. Using transcriptomic analysis of Aspergillus westerdijkiae exposed to benzoic acid, we identified three transporters potentially involved in weak acid adaptation: the polyamine transporter AwPat1, the amino acid permease AwAap1, and the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) transporter AwMfs1. Targeted deletion of AwPat1 or AwAap1 disrupted cellular morphology, causing collapsed hyphae, reduced conidiation, and arrested sclerotial maturation,

A total of 947 saline-alkaline tolerance-related molecular markers and a 5K cGPS genotyping chipwere developed, providing practical tools for marker-assisted selection and molecular design breeding of saline-alkaline-tolerant rapeseed. Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) has relatively strong tolerance to saline-alkaline stress and shows great potential for the sustainable utilization and improvement of saline-alkaline soils. However, the breeding of highly tolerant cultivars still mainly depends on conventional hybridization combined with phenotype-based selection, which constrains breeding efficien

Glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase (GDPD) catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerophosphodiesters into sn-glycerol-3-phosphate (G-3-P) and corresponding alcohols, which is integral to various physiological processes in plants. However, our comprehension of the GDPD gene family in foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) remains limited and unclear. This study aimed to identify and predict the function of GDPD gene family members in foxtail millet through a comprehensive genome-wide analysis.14 SiGDPD genes were identified in the foxtail millet genome. Phylogenetic analysis categorized SiGDPD protei

Natural rosin derivatives offer a promising scaffold for developing low-toxicity herbicides to address environmental concerns triggered by synthetic agrochemicals. In this research, a series of dehydroabietyl-hydrazide-based derivatives (3a-l) were synthesized using dehydroabietic acid as a lead compound. The herbicidal activities of these derivatives were evaluated against Echinochloa crusgalli, Sorghum halepense, Portulaca oleracea, and Amaranthus caudatus L. weeds. The result indicated that 3e exhibited broad-spectrum activity, particularly against barnyard grass root growth, with 91.0% inh

Reducing acrylamide (AA) formation in thermally processed foods, particularly bread, is a major food safety concern. Plant-based additives, including powders and extracts, offer a promising natural strategy for AA mitigation due to their bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which can scavenge reactive intermediates, modulate Maillard reactions, and inhibit lipid oxidation. This study systematically evaluated the effects of various plant powders and extracts, including green tea, rosemary, turmeric, buckwheat, and traditional spices, on AA formation in bread. Based on report

Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) are non-autonomous transposable elements which are propagated by retrotransposition and constitute an inherent part of the genome of most eukaryotic species. Knowledge of heterogeneous and highly abundant SINEs is crucial for de novo (or improvement of) annotation of whole genome sequences. We scanned Poaceae genome sequences of six important cereals (Oryza sativa, Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare, Panicum virgatum, Sorghum bicolor, Zea mays) and Brachypodium distachyon to examine the diversity and evolution of SINE populations. We comparatively an

For this study, we aimed to assess the dose-response antiosteoporotic effects of the middle section of velvet antlers (VAs) from sika deers (Cervus nippon) fed with different types of fodders. VAs prepared from farmed sika deers fed with feed mixtures containing sorghum distillery residue (VA-SDR) or without SDR (SDR replaced with hay, VA-Hay) were divided into upper (VAU), middle (VAM) and basal (VAB) sections. The chemical constituents of the middle sections obtained from each VA type were compared, and their antiosteoporotic activities were evaluated using rats with ovaries removed surgical

Rhizosphere bacteria were isolated from Costularia spp., pioneer sedges from ultramafic soils in New Caledonia, which is a hotspot of biodiversity in the South Pacific. Genus identification, ability to tolerate edaphic constraints, and plant-growth-promoting (PGP) properties were analysed. We found that 10(5) colony-forming units per gram of root were dominated by Proteobacteria (69%) and comprised 21 genera, including Burkholderia (28%), Curtobacterium (15%), Bradyrhizobium (9%), Sphingomonas (8%), Rhizobium (7%), and Bacillus (5%). High proportions of bacteria tolerated many elements of the
