Artificial intelligence-driven natural language processing for identifying linguistic patterns in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment: A study of lexical, syntactic, and cohesive features of speech through picture description tasks.

BackgroundLanguage deficits often occur early in the neurodegenerative process, yet traditional methods frequently fail to detect subtle changes. Natural language processing (NLP) offers a novel approach to identifying linguistic patterns associated with cognitive impairment.ObjectiveWe aimed to analyze linguistic features that differentiate cognitively unimpaired (CU), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) groups.MethodsData was extracted from picture description tasks performed by 336 participants in the DementiaBank datasets. 53 linguistic features aggregated into 4

Palatal lengthening by double opposing buccal flaps for surgical correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency in cleft patients.

AIM: To assess the efficacy of double opposing buccal flap in lengthening the soft palate for velopharyngeal insufficiency correction, and its potential complications in different age groups. CASE SERIES: From March 2016 to June 2019, 50 patients (24 children, 12 adolescents and 14 adults) underwent palatal lengthening using double opposing buccinator myomucosal flaps. Postoperative complications were assessed by two surgeons and the speech outcomes were evaluated by two speech-language pathologists after assessing changes in the hypernasality and intelligibility using a scoring approach. Friedreich ataxia: dysarthria profile and clinical data.

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is the most frequent recessive ataxia in the Western world. Dysarthria is a cardinal feature of FRDA, often leading to severe impairments in daily functioning, but its exact characteristics are only poorly understood so far. We performed a comprehensive evaluation of dysarthria severity and the profile of speech motor deficits in 20 patients with a genetic diagnosis of FRDA based on a carefully selected battery of speaking tasks and two widely used paraspeech tasks, i.e., oral diadochokinesis and sustained vowel productions. Perceptual ratings of the speech samples ide

The role of pharyngoplasty in congenital neurogenic speech disorders.

Children with dysarthria are often seriously handicapped by their inability to communicate. Velopharyngeal incompetence may contribute to their speech difficulties but the indications for pharyngoplasty are poorly defined. The speech of 41 children, thought to have a defect of neurological origin and referred for possible pharyngoplasty, was assessed by a speech therapist, by nasopharyngoscopy and by multiview videofluoroscopy. These investigations revealed that 16 had velopharyngeal incompetence, with a neurological aetiology, and might be expected to benefit from pharyngoplasty. Independent

A hands-free wearable electrolarynx for communication in tracheostomized mechanically ventilated critically ill patients: a case series.

The electrolarynx facilitates communication for tracheostomized mechanically ventilated patients. However, its effectiveness is often constrained by patient weakness. A hands-free electrolarynx offers a potential solution, enabling speech without the need to hold the device. This case series evaluated speech intelligibility with a hands-free electrolarynx in tracheostomized, mechanically ventilated patients. Seven tracheostomized patients were enrolled and instructed to use both the conventional and hands-free electrolarynxes. Speech intelligibility was assessed using the 5-point electrolarynx

Interrater Reliability and Concurrent Validity for the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale 3.0: Application With Persons With Acquired Apraxia of Speech and Aphasia.

Purpose This investigation was designed to provide interrater reliability data for the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale 3.0 (ASRS 3.0; Strand, Duffy, Clark, & Josephs, 2014 ). Importantly, ratings were completed by investigators who were not involved with the ASRS development. Another aim was to evaluate the relationship of the ASRS 3.0 total score to word intelligibility. Method Two investigators independently completed ASRS 3.0 ratings for 28 participants with chronic apraxia of speech and aphasia. Intelligibility scores were obtained for all participants. Results Consistency of ratings for ea

The Effects of Electromagnetic Articulography Sensors on Speech in Individuals With and Without Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: This study examined how wearing electromagnetic articulography (EMA) sensors affects acoustic and perceptual speech outcomes in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) with dysarthria and neurologically healthy control speakers. Additionally, the study explored potential after-effects on acoustic and perceptual measures following approximately 45 min of wearing EMA sensors in both groups. Finally, we investigated whether wearing EMA sensors or after-sensor effects differentially impacted the two groups. METHOD: Thirty-four speakers (21 controls and 13 PwPD) read "The Caterpillar" pass

Predicting phoneme and word recognition in noise using a computational model of the auditory periphery.

Several filterbank-based metrics have been proposed to predict speech intelligibility (SI). However, these metrics incorporate little knowledge of the auditory periphery. Neurogram-based metrics provide an alternative, incorporating knowledge of the physiology of hearing by using a mathematical model of the auditory nerve response. In this work, SI was assessed utilizing different filterbank-based metrics (the speech intelligibility index and the speech-based envelope power spectrum model) and neurogram-based metrics, using the biologically inspired model of the auditory nerve proposed by Zila

Intonation patterns in older children with cerebral palsy before and after speech intervention.

PURPOSE: This paper examined the production of intonation patterns in children with developmental dysarthria associated with cerebral palsy (CP) prior to and after speech intervention focussing on respiration and phonation. The study further sought to establish whether intonation performance might be related to changes in speech intelligibility. METHOD: Intonation patterns were examined using connected speech samples of 15 older children with moderate to severe developmental dysarthria due to CP (9 females; age range: 11-18). Recordings were made prior to and after speech intervention based o
