Effect of iatrogenic factors on periodontal health: An epidemiological study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease. Among conglomerate etiological factors, overhanging interproximal restorations are viewed as contributing factors causing gingival inflammation due to their retentive capacity for bacterial plaque leading to periodontal destruction. Hence this study is intended to determine the prevalence of overhanging restorations and its effect on periodontal status of the teeth and to assess the iatrogenic effects of overhanging margins on periodontal health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 subjects of 15-65 years of age were recruited for thi

Evaluation of Surface Roughness and Microbial Adhesion of Primary Esthetic Crowns: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Surface roughness plays a crucial role in microbial adhesion and retention on dental crowns, contributing to secondary infections and the development of periodontal diseases through bacterial plaque accumulation. In treating pulpitis of primary teeth via pulpectomy, dental crowns are often used as full-coverage restorative solutions. Among the most widely utilized crowns are stainless steel and zirconia crowns. However, zirconia crowns present drawbacks, such as excessive tooth reduction and increased wear on opposing teeth, while stainless steel crowns (SSCs) pose esthetic limitat

The significance of occlusion in restorative dentistry.

All occlusal therapy relates ultimately to the hinge position of the mandible. By consensus, the optimum hinge position is centric relation, the most anterosuperior position of the condyles in the glenoid fossae, articulating against the eminences, with the disks properly interposed. Also by consensus, the optimum occlusal scheme is mutual protection, in which the posterior teeth contact simultaneously and equally in centric occlusion, the canines disclude the posterior teeth in lateral excursions, and the anterior teeth disclude the posterior teeth in protrusion. Whenever CR cannot be used as

Oral Health Consequences of Smokeless Tobacco Use: A Narrative Review.

Smokeless tobacco (SLT), including snus, chewing tobacco, naswar, and nicotine pouches, is widely used and often perceived as a safer alternative to smoking. Among current users of SLT, mucosal alterations-most commonly smokeless-tobacco keratosis and white plaque-like lesions-are frequently observed at product placement sites, such as between the lip and gum, with patterns closely linked to the frequency and duration of use. Several reports describe partial or complete regression of these lesions after discontinuation. Periodontal findings are mixed: increased gingival recession - particularl

Effect of inadequate ferrule segment location on fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The circumferential 2 mm ferrule during the fabrication of the crown is strongly advocated for the long-term clinical success. During the routine clinical practice, the dentist encounters the endodontically treated tooth (ETT) with inadequacy of the ferrule in some segment due to caries, abrasion, and erosions. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the consequence of inadequate segmental ferrule location on fracture strength of the root canal-treated anterior and posterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty each maxillary canine and mandibular premolar intact human

Nano-scale sliding contact deformation behaviour of enamel under wet and dry conditions.

The abrasion response of cross sectional areas of enamel was studied by sliding a rounded diamond conical nano-indenter tip across the surface. The nano-indenter tip (radius approximately 1,200 nm) was scanned over a specific squared area with a load of 400 microN. Two different environments were chosen: Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) and atmospheric laboratory condition. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) were used to characterize the final abraded areas. In addition, single scratches with linear incremented load were performed. The normal load and disp

Enamel Remineralization with Novel Bioactive Glass Air Abrasion.

Enamel demineralization or white spot lesions (WSLs) are a frequent complication associated with fixed appliance-based orthodontic treatment. The remineralization potential of a novel fluoride-containing bioactive glass (QMAT3) propelled via an air abrasion system was compared with Sylc glass and artificial saliva on artificially induced WSLs. Thirty extracted human premolars were randomly assigned into 3 groups ( n = 10) per method of treatment and scanned with optical coherence tomography and noncontact profilometer in the 4 enamel states: sound, demineralized, after glass propulsion, and af

Oral and Dental Examination Findings in European Polecats (Mustela putorius).

Dental and oral diseases in the domestic ferret have been reported, but comparison with their closest wild relative, the European polecat (Mustela putorius), is lacking. Dental and orofacial pathology was evaluated by means of visual examination and dental radiographical analysis of 234 museum skulls. Most of these (70.5%) originated from Austria and the remainder came from seven other European countries. Linguoverted mandibular second incisor teeth were noted in 77% of the skulls. There were 7,268 (91.4% of all potential) teeth available for examination. Few (0.3%) were presumed congenitally

Light and scanning electron microscopic report of four fractured implants.

Although they are fortunately rare, implant fractures can cause significant problems for both clinicians and patients. The authors present a light and scanning electron microscopic study of four fractured implants in two patients. Both patients had parafunctional habits (bruxism), hypertrophic masticatory muscles, and wear of occlusal surfaces. The scanning electron microscopic study of the fractured surfaces of all four implants showed the presence of fatigue striations. Bending overload was probably created by a combination of parafunctional forces, bone resorption, posterior location of the
