Leveraging wastewater-based epidemiology to monitor the spread of neglected tropical diseases in African communities.

Neglected tropical diseases continue to cause a significant burden worldwide, with Africa accounting for more than one-third of the global burden. Over the past decade, progress has been made in eliminating, controlling, and eradicating these diseases in Africa. By December 2022, 47 out of 54 African countries had eliminated at least one neglected tropical disease, and more countries were close to achieving this milestone. Between 2020 and 2021, there was an 80 million reduction in people requiring intervention. However, continued efforts are needed to manage neglected tropical diseases and ad

Methicillin-Resistant and Biofilm-Producing Staphylococcus aureus in Nasal Carriage among Health Care Workers and Medical Students.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat. It has been portrayed as a slow tsunami. Multidrug resistance and extensive drug resistance exacerbate the already-existing AMR problem. The aim of the study was to access the colonization of methicillin-resistant and biofilm-producing Staphylococcus aureus among healthcare workers (HCWs) and medical students (MSs). A cross-sectional study was designed. A total of 352 participants (176 were HCWs and 176 were MSs) were enrolled from different hospitals and medical colleges in Kathmandu, Nepal. Nasal cavity swab samples were collected and inocul

Association between housing damage, present bias and delayed-onset post-traumatic stress symptoms among older adults 9 years after a natural disaster.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that experience of natural disasters may heighten present bias. Research also suggests that impaired self-control (in particular, heightened present bias) could be linked to delayed-onset post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among survivors of natural disasters. We examined a hypothesis that the association between disaster experiences and delayed-onset PTSS is mediated through present bias among older survivors of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. METHODS: The baseline survey was conducted for older adults who lived in a city located 80 km west of t

Comparative study of clinical features and vaccination status in Omicron and non-Omicron infected patients during the third wave in Mumbai, India.

OBJECTIVES: The Omicron variant-mediated COVID-19 wave is responsible for a global tsunami of cases. There is scarce data about the clinical and epidemiological characteristic analyses of the third wave. We present the data of COVID-19 patients from Mumbai region during the early third wave by taking S-gene target failure (SGTF) as a proxy for probable Omicron cases. METHODS: We collected retrospective data of RT-PCR-confirmed (COVID-19) patients, and measured the proportion of possible Omicron cases by SGTF. We segregated and analyzed the clinical and lab data of patients with outcomes such

Delayed post-traumatic stress and memory inflation of life-threatening events following a natural disaster: prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The causes of delayed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are debated, and the validity of late-onset PTSD has been questioned. AIMS: We aimed to examine predictors of delayed PTSD in a community sample of survivors of a natural disaster. METHOD: Norwegian survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami (n = 532) responded to a questionnaire at 6 and 24 months post-disaster. The questionnaire measured PTSD symptoms, recalled exposure and immediate stress responses to the disaster, recalled perceived life threat, personality dimensions, social support and other subsequent adverse lif

Cardiometabolic Profiles and Change in Neighborhood Food and Built Environment Among Older Adults: A Natural Experiment.

BACKGROUND: The association between neighborhood environment and health may be biased due to confounding by residential self-selection. The displacement of disaster victims can act as a natural experiment that exposes residents to neighborhood environments they did not select, allowing for the study of neighborhood effects on health. METHODS: We leveraged data from a cohort of older adults 65 years of age or older living in Iwanuma, Japan, located 80 km west of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Surveys were conducted 7 months before the disaster, as well as 2.5 and 5.5 years a

PCR and culture identification of pathogenic Leptospira spp. from coastal soil in Leyte, Philippines, after a storm surge during Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira spp. Most of the outbreaks of leptospirosis occur after floods caused by heavy rain in countries where Leptospira spp. are endemic. It has been believed that the overflow of seawater rarely causes outbreaks of leptospirosis because the leptospires are killed by salt water. On 8 November 2013, a storm surge caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) inundated the entire coastal areas of Tacloban and Palo in Leyte, Philippines. The present study was carried out in order to determine whether the environmental leptospires in soil were able

Challenges of DNA profiling in mass disaster investigations.

In cases of mass disaster, there is often a need for managing, analyzing, and comparing large numbers of biological samples and DNA profiles. This requires the use of laboratory information management systems for large-scale sample logging and tracking, coupled with bioinformatic tools for DNA database searching according to different matching algorithms, and for the evaluation of the significance of each match by likelihood ratio calculations. There are many different interrelated factors and circumstances involved in each specific mass disaster scenario that may challenge the final DNA ident

The Lived Experience of Victims of Catastrophic Coastal Erosion: A cycle of impact, consequence and recovery.

OBJECTIVES: Environmental hazards are part of the Earth's natural cycle and are ongoing within human history. When vulnerable situations meet environmental hazards, disasters occur where human and natural costs could be enormous. This study aimed to explore the experiences of the victims of coastal erosion during the monsoon season. METHODS: Seven victims of catastrophic coastal erosion in the Kollam District of Kerala, India, were interviewed from December 2013 to February 2014. The study followed Edmond Husserl's descriptive phenomenological method. RESULT: These interviews constituted the

Necrotizing Oesophagitis Associated with Ketoacidosis: A Case Series Exploring the Diagnostic Dilemma of Metabolic Overlap Syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing esophagitis, or acute esophageal necrosis (AEN), is a rare but serious cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, typically associated with critical illness. While traditionally linked to hypoperfusion states, its occurrence in metabolic emergencies-particularly where diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), alcoholic ketoacidosis (AKA), and starvation ketosis overlap-remains underrecognized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case series of four patients admitted to a rural Indian hospital with upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the setting of severe metabolic derangement, all di

Is canonical SD a clinically relevant model of migraine? Argument con.

Cortical spreading depolarization (CSD) is a unique brain response to a neuronal insult, manifested by a massive exchange of intra- and extracellular compartments, loss of ionic gradients, and membrane potential, where neurons are caged in this pathological state for minutes with no activity. This electrochemical tsunami propagates slowly by invading the neighboring intact cortex in the whole hemisphere in rodents, and it is transient in metabolically uncompromised brains. Vascular reactivity of brief hyperemia, prolonged oligemia, increased inhibitory synaptic tonus, intracellular edema, and

Posttraumatic stress response following the loss of significant close others in the Great East Japan Earthquake: Fukushima Health Management Survey.

During the Great East Japan Earthquake, many people experienced the loss of family and friends, among other traumatic events. This study sought to clarify the impact of the loss of significant close others on posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), as well as the factors associated with PTSS, among individuals who experienced the loss of significant close others (i.e., bereaved group). Self-administered questionnaires were mailed to men and women (N = 180,604) aged 16 years and older living in municipalities that included evacuated areas surrounding the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima D

Role of cytokines produced by T helper immune-modulators in dengue pathogenesis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Modulation of the immune reaction is essential in the development of various diseases, including dengue's "Cytokine Tsunami", an increase in vascular permeability with concomitant severe vascular leakage. We aim to identify the role of T-helper (Th) cells, Th2 and Th7, with their related cytokines in dengue pathogenesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine electronic databases and manual search were applied to detect available publications. A meta-analysis using a fixed- or random-effect model was performed to measure standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence in

Gender moderates diurnal cortisol in relation to trauma and PTSD symptoms: A study in Sri Lankan adolescents.

Trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been linked to aspects of diurnal cortisol secretion in adolescents, but little is known about gender differences in these associations. A school-based sample of Sri Lankan adolescents aged 13-16 years took part in this study 4.5 years after the 2004 tsunami had impacted many of their lives to varying degrees. Saliva samples were obtained 4 times a day for 3 days in 84 participants, who also completed measures of lifetime trauma, current stressors, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). We used multilevel regression to estimate e
