Loss of visual acuity due to eye injuries among 6292 school children in the Sultanate of Oman.

PURPOSE: In 1992-94 a nation-wide survey in primary schools in the Sultanate of Oman for ocular disorders was conducted. This report focuses on the prevalence of visual acuity loss after injury. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A random selection of 6,292 children from Grades 1 and 6 from all primary schools in the country provided the research sample. Children who failed the visual acuity screening test received a complete "on the spot" eye examination by the pediatric ophthalmologist. RESULTS: 12 children were found to have monocular low vision (VA <0.3 to amaurosis) caused by injury. Total prevalenc

The effectiveness of Irlen filters for improving reading performance: a pilot study.

The objectives of this pilot study were to investigate the effectiveness of Irlen filters for improving comfort and reading performance and to determine whether traditional optometric intervention would be effective in relieving the symptoms commonly reported by people seeking help through the use of Irlen filters. Thirty subjects were included in the study: 12 males and 18 females. The ages of the subjects ranged from 9 to 51 (mean = 23.6). They were randomly placed in either an Irlen filter treatment group (n = 11), a vision therapy treatment group (n = 11), or a control group (n = 8). Pre-

Cost-Effectiveness of Addressing Retinopathy of Prematurity in Rwanda.

PURPOSE: With the expansion of neonatal care in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), an increasing number of premature babies are at risk to develop retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Previous studies have quantified the cost-effectiveness of addressing ROP in middle-income countries, but few have focused on SSA. This study estimates the cost of a national program for ROP screening and anti-VEGF injection treatment in Rwanda compared to the status quo. METHODS: Medical cost data were collected from King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda (July 2022). Societal burden of vision loss included lost productivity and q

Ophthalmological screening guidelines for individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a connective tissue disorder in which the Type 1 collagen is defective. The eye is a structure rich in collagen Type 1 and is heavily impacted by the disease. Many vision-threatening eye diseases have been associated with OI. The onset of these diseases also tend to occur at an earlier age in individuals with OI. Despite the research on these risks, appropriate ophthalmological screening or care guidelines for individuals with OI remain unknown. As such, the purpose of this scoping review was to explore and describe existing ophthalmological screenin

Keeping an eye on Parkinson's disease: color vision and outer retinal thickness as simple and non-invasive biomarkers.

Over the last two decades, visual symptoms and retinal changes in Parkinson's disease (PD) have emerged as important biomarkers. Color vision deficiency, which begins in the outer retina, has been increasingly investigated, but a focused review of these papers has not recently been conducted. Similarly, thinning of the outer retina as measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT) holds potential as a screening marker for PD, particularly as these devices are already commonplace in community and hospital settings. Moreover, outer retinal thinning may be more specific for Parkinson's disease

Assessment of vision and hearing in children conceived spontaneously and by ICSI: a prospective controlled, single-blinded follow-up study.

Long-term follow-up studies on the health of children born after assisted reproduction technologies are mandatory. Vision and hearing are the most important senses that continue to develop during childhood. There are few reports on vision and hearing in preschool children born after assisted conception. This prospective controlled blinded follow-up study examined 276 term-born singleton intracytoplasmic injection (ICSI) children and 273 spontaneously conceived controls at a mean age of 5.5 years and performed detailed vision and hearing test and clinically examined eyes and ears. There was no

Can chronic visual discomfort measures accurately predict acute symptoms?

PURPOSE: Several surveys exist to determine the severity and frequency of chronic symptoms related to visual discomfort. To our knowledge, there are no studies that investigate the potential of chronic visual discomfort ratings to predict acute discomfort symptoms that are experienced after tests of accommodation and vergence. We examined the ability of two measures of chronic visual discomfort symptoms to predict acute symptoms experienced. METHODS: The Conlon et al. and the convergence insufficiency symptom surveys were administered to 40 participants to assess chronic visual discomfort sym
