The tangential growth of the human visual cortex and maternal smoking during pregnancy.

Exposure to maternal cigarette smoking in utero is a prenatal adversity due, in part, to the pharmacological effects of nicotine. During gestation, thalamocortical inputs-generated by cholinergic retinal waves-contribute to the development of the visual cortex (V1). First, we investigated the relationship between prenatal exposure to maternal cigarette smoking (PEMCS) and the tangential growth of V1. We observed a robust association between PEMCS and V1 surface area in the UK Biobank (n = 26,987 adults, 30% exposed) and replicated this relationship in the Saguenay Youth Study (n = 944 adolesce

Neural Sensitivity to Radial Frequency Patterns in the Visual Cortex of Developing Macaques.

Visual resolution, contrast sensitivity, and form perception improve gradually with age. In nonhuman primates, the sensitivity and resolution of cells in the retina, lateral geniculate nucleus, and primary visual cortex (V1) also improve, but not enough to account for the perceptual changes. So, what aspects of visual system development limit visual sensitivity in infants? Improvements in behavioral sensitivity might arise from maturation of regions downstream of V1 such as V2, V4, and IT, which are thought to support increasingly complex perceptual abilities. We recorded the responses of popu

Emergence of a contrast-invariant representation of naturalistic texture in macaque visual cortex.

Sensory stimuli vary across a variety of dimensions, like contrast, orientation, or texture. The brain must rely on population representations to distinguish changes in one dimension from changes in another. To understand how the visual system might extract separable stimulus representations, we recorded multiunit neuronal responses to texture images varying along two dimensions: contrast, a property represented as early as the retina, and naturalistic statistical structure, a property that modulates neuronal responses in V2 and V4, but not in V1. We measured how sites in these 3 cortical area

Recent Advances in the Molecular Mechanisms of Ocular Dominance Plasticity in the Visual Cortex.

The visual cortex is an essential part of the brain for processing visual information. It exhibits structural and functional plasticity, which is crucial for adapting to complex visual environments. The quintessential manifestation of visual cortical plasticity is ocular dominance plasticity during the critical period, which involves numerous cellular and molecular events. While previous studies have emphasized the role of visual cortical neurons and their associated functional molecules in visual plasticity, recent findings have revealed that structural factors such as the extracellular matri

Acute exercise as a modifier of neocortical plasticity and aperiodic activity in the visual cortex.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a form of neuroplasticity commonly implicated in mechanistic models of learning and memory. Acute exercise can boost LTP in the motor cortex, and is associated with a shift in excitation/inhibition (E:I) balance, but whether this extends to other regions such as the visual cortex is unknown. We investigated the effect of a preceding bout of exercise on LTP induction and the E:I balance in the visual cortex using electroencephalography (EEG). Young adults (N = 20, mean age = 24.20) engaged in 20 min of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise and rest acr

Mapping vestibular and visual contributions to angular head velocity tuning in the cortex.

Neurons that signal the angular velocity of head movements (AHV cells) are important for processing visual and spatial information. However, it has been challenging to isolate the sensory modality that drives them and to map their cortical distribution. To address this, we develop a method that enables rotating awake, head-fixed mice under a two-photon microscope in a visual environment. Starting in layer 2/3 of the retrosplenial cortex, a key area for vision and navigation, we find that 10% of neurons report angular head velocity (AHV). Their tuning properties depend on vestibular input with

The Second Spiking Threshold: Dynamics of Laminar Network Spiking in the Visual Cortex.

Most neurons have a threshold separating the silent non-spiking state and the state of producing temporal sequences of spikes. But neurons in vivo also have a second threshold, found recently in granular layer neurons of the primary visual cortex, separating spontaneous ongoing spiking from visually evoked spiking driven by sharp transients. Here we examine whether this second threshold exists outside the granular layer and examine details of transitions between spiking states in ferrets exposed to moving objects. We found the second threshold, separating spiking states evoked by stationary an

Ocular hypertension results in retinotopic alterations in the visual cortex of adult mice.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a group of optic neuropathies characterized by the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Since ocular hypertension (OHT) is a main risk factor, current therapies are predominantly based on lowering eye pressure. However, a subset of treated patients continues to lose vision. More research into pathological mechanisms underlying glaucoma is therefore warranted in order to develop novel therapeutic strategies. In this study we investigated the impact of OHT from eye to brain in mice. METHODS: Monocular hypertension (mOHT) was induced in CD-1 mice by laser photocoagulation

Unmasking Proteolytic Activity for Adult Visual Cortex Plasticity by the Removal of Lynx1.

UNLABELLED: Experience-dependent cortical plasticity declines with age. At the molecular level, experience-dependent proteolytic activity of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) becomes restricted in the adult brain if mice are raised in standard cages. Understanding the mechanism for the loss of permissive proteolytic activity is therefore a key link for improving function in adult brains. Using the mouse primary visual cortex (V1) as a model, we demonstrate that tPA activity in V1 can be unmasked following 4 d of monocular deprivation when the mice older than 2 months are raised in standard ca

Random Wiring, Ganglion Cell Mosaics, and the Functional Architecture of the Visual Cortex.

The architecture of iso-orientation domains in the primary visual cortex (V1) of placental carnivores and primates apparently follows species invariant quantitative laws. Dynamical optimization models assuming that neurons coordinate their stimulus preferences throughout cortical circuits linking millions of cells specifically predict these invariants. This might indicate that V1's intrinsic connectome and its functional architecture adhere to a single optimization principle with high precision and robustness. To validate this hypothesis, it is critical to closely examine the quantitative pred

Visual space and object space in the cerebral cortex of retinal disease patients.

The lower areas of the hierarchically organized visual cortex are strongly retinotopically organized, with strong responses to specific retinotopic stimuli, and no response to other stimuli outside these preferred regions. Higher areas in the ventral occipitotemporal cortex show a weak eccentricity bias, and are mainly sensitive for object category (e.g., faces versus buildings). This study investigated how the mapping of eccentricity and category sensitivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging is affected by a retinal lesion in two very different low vision patients: a patient with a

Aging alters visual processing of objects and shapes in inferotemporal cortex in monkeys.

Visual perception declines with age. Perceptual deficits may originate not only in the optical system serving vision but also in the neural machinery processing visual information. Since homologies between monkey and human vision permit extrapolation from monkeys to humans, data from young, middle aged and old monkeys were analyzed to show age-related changes in the neuronal activity in the inferotemporal cortex, which is critical for object and shape vision. We found an increased neuronal response latency, and a decrease in the stimulus selectivity in the older animals and suggest that these

Impact of chiasma opticum malformations on the organization of the human ventral visual cortex.

Congenital malformations of the optic chiasm, such as enhanced and reduced crossing of the optic nerve fibers, are evident in albinism and achiasma, respectively. In early visual cortex the resulting additional visual input from the ipsilateral visual hemifield is superimposed onto the normal retinotopic representation of the contralateral visual field, which is likely due to conservative geniculo-striate projections. Counterintuitively, this organization in early visual cortex does not have profound consequences on visual function. Here we ask, whether higher stages of visual processing provi

Optical imaging of visually guided reaching in macaque posterior parietal cortex.

Sensorimotor transformation for reaching movements in primates requires a large network of visual, parietal, and frontal cortical areas. We performed intrinsic optical imaging over posterior parietal cortex including areas 7a and the dorsal perilunate in macaque monkeys during visually guided hand movements. Reaching was performed while foveating one of nine static reach targets; thus eye-position-varied concurrently with reach position. The hemodynamic reflectance signal was analyzed during specific phases of the task including pre-reach, reach, and touch epochs. The eye position maps changed

Effects of divergent strabismus on the horizontal connections of neurons in the cat visual cortex.

Neuron connections of eye dominance columns in the visual cortex were studied in kittens at age 5-6 months with experimental strabismus induced on days 13-16 of life (by tenotomy of the medial ocular muscle). A photographic method was used to assess the angle between the visual axes of the eyes. The operated oculomotor muscle was found to undergo partial reattachment to the eyeball. In some kittens, the operated eye returned to the normal position, while others showed persisting deviation of the eyes by 5-15 degrees. Loss of the binocular properties of cortical neurons have been demonstrated i

The gamma slideshow: object-based perceptual cycles in a model of the visual cortex.

While recent studies have shed light on the mechanisms that generate gamma (>40 Hz) oscillations, the functional role of these oscillations is still debated. Here we suggest that the purported mechanism of gamma oscillations (feedback inhibition from local interneurons), coupled with lateral connections implementing "Gestalt" principles of object integration, naturally leads to a decomposition of the visual input into object-based "perceptual cycles," in which neuron populations representing different objects within the scene will tend to fire at successive cycles of the local gamma oscillatio

Auditory attraction: activation of visual cortex by music and sound in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder with a distinctive phenotype, including cognitive-linguistic features, nonsocial anxiety, and a strong attraction to music. we preformed functional MRI studies examining brain responses to musical and other types of stimuli in young adults with Williams syndrome and typically developing controls. In Study 1, the Williams syndrome group exhibited unforeseen activations of the visual cortex to musical stimuli, and it was this novel finding that became the focus of two subsequent studies. Using retinotopy, color localizers, and additional

Effects of age and retinal degeneration on the expression of proprotein convertases in the visual cortex.

Proprotein convertases (PCs) comprise a large family of subtilisin-like, eukaryotic, serine endoproteases that process substrates important in the development, homeostasis, and pathology of the nervous system. Despite important interactions with these substrates, including neurotrophins, PC expression throughout normal postnatal development and disease progression in the brain remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the expression profiles of widely expressed and tissue-specific PCs varied during normal brain development or neurological disorders. We exami

Characteristics of visual seeking and evoked potentials in the extrastriate areas of the cortex in humans.

Studies in 11 young, healthy subjects addressed the characteristics of visual seeking (time taken, errors) on changes in the parameters of the target element to be sought (shape, color, and location) in an environment containing heterogeneous white distractors. Evoked potentials (EP) were recorded in six cortical leads (P3, P4, T3, T4, T5, T6) and the late endogenous components of EP were studied, i.e., the N2 and P3 components (standard terminology), as these components are known to change when the type of search changes, in the zone of so-called late selection.
