The impact of co-infections on the haematological profile of East African Short-horn Zebu calves.

The cumulative effect of co-infections between pathogen pairs on the haematological response of East African Short-horn Zebu calves is described. Using a longitudinal study design a stratified clustered random sample of newborn calves were recruited into the Infectious Diseases of East African Livestock (IDEAL) study and monitored at 5-weekly intervals until 51 weeks of age. At each visit samples were collected and analysed to determine the infection status of each calf as well as their haematological response. The haematological parameters investigated included packed cell volume (PCV), white

Analysis of management factors influencing Anaplasma marginale transmission.

The aim of this study was to identify factors that play a key role in the epidemiology of bovine anaplasmosis by adapting a model primarily developed for cattle babesiosis. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to study the proportion of calf herds in endemic stability/instability for A. marginale in a semi-arid area of Argentina. The A. marginale inoculation rate (h) was calculated from age-specific seroprevalence using double-antigen sandwich ELISA in 58 herds of 4.5-8.5-month-old calves. Herds were considered to be in endemic instability (EI) at h < 0.005 and, therefore, at ri

Immediate and persistent efficacy of sarolaner (Simparica™) against Haemaphysalis elliptica on dogs.

BACKGROUND: The southern African yellow dog tick, Haemaphysalis elliptica, occurs in eastern and southern Africa and adults infest domestic and wild carnivores. This tick species is also a vector of the highly virulent Babesia rossi pathogen, the causative agent of canine babesiosis in sub-Saharan Africa. Sustained high levels of efficacy of a parasiticide are not only important in protecting dogs against the direct effects of tick infestation, but also in reducing the risk of tick-borne diseases. Sarolaner (Simparica™ chewable tablets) has been reported to be effective against the major tick

Investigation of a syndrome characterised by passage of red urine in smallholder dairy cattle in East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania.

A case-control study was carried out to investigate a syndrome in smallholder dairy cattle in East Usambara Mountains characterised by urination of clotted blood. Smallholder dairy farms with the problem (cases) were matched with nearest farms without the problem (controls). In total, 30 farmers from Mbomole (19), Shebomeza (9) and Mlesa (2) villages in Amani division participated in the study. Using a structured questionnaire, information on risk factors associated with conditions characterised by passage of red urine in cattle was collected. In addition, serum samples from 80 smallholder dai

Herd-level occurrence and spread of Theileria equi and its associated ticks on an Austrian horse farm.

BACKGROUND: Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease caused by the blood parasites Theileria equi, Theileria haneyi, and Babesia caballi transmitted primarily by hard ticks (Ixodidae). The clinical courses of EP range from asymptomatic to severe, and chronic infections for several years support the transmission among hosts. METHODS: Over a period of two years, blood and fecal samples were taken from horses (n = 18) on a single farm in eastern Austria, starting with the first confirmed case of T. equi infection. Hard ticks (n = 1525 of Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Haema

Presence of Borrelia burgdorferi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) in southern Kettle Moraine State Forest, Wisconsin, and characterization of strain W97F51.

Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson, Schmidt, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner; babesiosis, caused by Babesia microti Franca; and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum Bakken & Dumler have been reported in Wisconsin, mainly in the endemic areas of the northwestern part of the state. People exposed to blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, from this region can potentially contract one or all of these diseases concurrently. Within the past several years, there have been cases of Lyme disease reported from southeastern Wisconsin, an area that contains

Malaria from a Zoological Point of View: (Section of Comparative Medicine).

PROTOZOAL PARASITES OCCURRING IN THE RED CELLS OF MAMMALS ARE: Hepatozoon, Babesia, Theileria and Plasmodium. The frequency with which these forms occur differs considerably in the different mammalian orders. But whilst there is a relationship apparent between the mammalian stem and the form of parasite, there appears to be an even closer association with the type of blood-sucking arthropods which the mode of life of the animals in a particular stem favours. Ungulates in the days of their greatest development chiefly roamed in herds over rather arid country not favouring mosquitoes, but suitab

Multiomics Reveals Symbionts, Pathogens, and Tissue-Specific Microbiome of Blacklegged Ticks (Ixodes scapularis) from a Lyme Disease Hot Spot in Southeastern Ontario, Canada.

Ticks in the family Ixodidae are important vectors of zoonoses, including Lyme disease (LD), which is caused by spirochete bacteria from the Borreliella (Borrelia) burgdorferi sensu lato complex. The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) continues to expand across Canada, creating hot spots of elevated LD risk at the leading edge of its expanding range. Current efforts to understand the risk of pathogen transmission associated with I. scapularis in Canada focus primarily on targeted screens, while natural variation in the tick microbiome remains poorly understood. Using multiomics consisting of

Comparative moleculo-immunological analysis of swamp- and riverine-type water buffaloes responses.

This moleculo-epidemiological and immunological study through cytokine response assessment was done to know the dynamics of cytokines in the initiation, persistence and association to physiological changes of a particular pathogen in water buffaloes. This is important to understand the magnitude and behavior of disease progression. Water buffalo blood samples gathered from different places in the Philippines revealed a 9.4%, 27.6%, 10.3% and 4.4% prevalence of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine leukemia virus (BLV), Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina infection, respectively. Tick-borne pathogens in small mammals from the Pantanal biome, Brazil.

The order Piroplasmida (e.g., Babesia, Theileria, Cytauxzoon, and Rangelia) and order Eucoccidiorida, Suborder Adelorina (e.g., Hepatozoon) comprise protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa. At the same time, the Anaplasmataceae family (Order Rickettsiales) encompasses important bacterial pathogens, notably the genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. All these genera of agents have pathogenic species transmitted to vertebrate hosts via ticks and pose significant economic, veterinary, and medical concerns. Biological samples of small mammals (Rodentia and Didelphiomorphia) collected between 2015 and 2018, as

[PCR detection of the causative agents of infections transmitted by ticks on the Kamchatka Peninsula].

There has been recently a rise in referrals for Ixodes tick bites in the spring and summer periods in the Kamchatka Territory. Among the dominant tick species, there has been the taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus habiting the extensive areas of the southern and central parts of the peninsula. Examination of 84 I. persulcatus females collected from human beings and domestic animals in 2003 to 2007 detected DNA of the pathogens of tick-borne borreliosis (B. burgdorferi sensu lato), rickettsiasis (R. tarasevichiae and R. helvetica), and Ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis (A. phagocytophilum). Characterization and transcriptional analysis of the promoter region of the Duffy blood group, chemokine receptor (DARC) gene in cattle.

The Duffy antigen is the only receptor for Plasmodium vivax, a hemoparasite of the phylum Apicomplexa and the cause of vivax malaria in humans. Resistance to this parasite in the majority of black African individuals and their descendents is due to a mutation in the gene promoter region, which blocks its transcription on erythrocytes. Regarding bovine babesiosis, it is known that taurine breeds are more susceptible to parasite infection than zebuine breeds. In order to verify whether the same human resistance occurs in bovine, the 5' flanking region of the DARC gene was isolated and characteri

Evaluation of fipronil efficacy and first molecular report of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) gated chloride channel gene of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks in China and Pakistan.

Southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (R) microplus, is a major challenge in transmitting Babesia spp., Theileria spp., and Anaplasma spp., worldwide. Mitigation of this tick and associated pathogens is crucial for animal and human-health. In present study, laboratory-based larval packet tests (LPTs) were performed to assess fipronil efficacy against R. microplus ticks collected from four Chinese localities, Nanning, Guangshui, Macheng, and Tengchong. Additionally, we reported first molecular characterization of the full-length gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride channel gene of R. micr

Phytoecdysteroids as modulators of the Toxoplasma gondii growth rate in human and mouse cells.

BACKGROUND: Searching for new effective drugs against human and animal toxoplasmosis we decided to test the anti-Toxoplasma potential of phytoecdysteroids (α-ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone) characterized by the pleiotropic activity on mammalian organisms including the enhancement of host's anti-parasitic defence. This objective was accomplished by the in vitro evaluation of T. gondii growth in phytoecdysteroid-treated immunocompetent cells of selected hosts: humans and two strains of inbred mice with genetically determined different susceptibility to toxoplasmosis. METHODS: Peripheral mononu

Subolesin expression in response to pathogen infection in ticks.

BACKGROUND: Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are vectors of pathogens worldwide that cause diseases in humans and animals. Ticks and pathogens have co-evolved molecular mechanisms that contribute to their mutual development and survival. Subolesin was discovered as a tick protective antigen and was subsequently shown to be similar in structure and function to akirins, an evolutionarily conserved group of proteins in insects and vertebrates that controls NF-kB-dependent and independent expression of innate immune response genes. The objective of this study was to investigate subolesin expression in seve

Severe Babesiosis With Multifactorial Hemolysis and Pulmonary Complications in an Asplenic Patient at a Tertiary Cancer Center.

Babesiosis is a tick-borne protozoal infection that can cause life-threatening disease in asplenic or immunocompromised patients. We report a 71-year-old woman with prior distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy who developed severe babesiosis complicated by pulmonary involvement and complement-mediated hemolysis. Initial therapy with clindamycin-atovaquone and partial exchange transfusion was required due to a reported azithromycin allergy; following successful rechallenge, she tolerated guideline-based azithromycin-atovaquone. Despite parasite clearance, she developed complement-mediated hemoly
