Cervical-vaginal and intraanal human papillomavirus infection of young girls with external genital warts.

To expand information regarding the epidemiology of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in young girls, girls with external genital warts were examined for the prevalence of cervical-vaginal or intraanal HPV infection. Cervical-vaginal wash specimens and biopsies of external lesions were examined for HPV genotypes 1, 2, 4, 6, 11, and 16 using Southern transfer hybridization with restriction endonuclease fragment length analysis. Exfoliated cells from cervical-vaginal and intraanal canals were processed for cytologic study. Of 18 girls, 8 (44%) had cytologic or genomic evidence (or bot

A randomized trial of laser vaporization in the management of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia associated with human papilloma virus infection.

A randomized controlled trial was carried out at colposcopy clinics in the Birmingham and Midland Hospital for Women, to determine the efficacy of laser vaporization in the management of cervical Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection occurring alone or in association with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and to study the natural history of these lesions. The subjects were 365 women referred for investigation of cytological abnormality who were found to have histological evidence of HPV infection alone or in association with CIN1 or CIN2 and were considered suitable for local destructi

A patient with simultaneous absence of "classical" natural killer cells (CD3-, CD16+, and NKH1+) and expansion of CD3+, CD4-, CD8-, NKH1+ subset.

The clinical manifestations of putative natural killer (NK) cell deficiency are not well-known but theoretically should include recurrent tumors and systemic viral infections. In this article, we discuss a patient with recurrent condylomata, vulvar and cervical carcinoma in situ, pulmonary infiltrates of unknown significance, and a hypercoagulable state. This patient has a dramatic persistent deficiency in her circulating "classic" NK cells (CD3-, CD16+, NKH1+) and a simultaneous persistent expansion of a normally minor lymphocyte cell subset (CD3+, CD4-, CD8-, NKH1+) that does not express the

Integrating clinical, community, and policy perspectives on human papillomavirus vaccination.

Infection with genital human papillomavirus (HPV) may cause anogenital cancers, oropharyngeal cancers, anogenital warts, and respiratory papillomas. Two prophylactic vaccines (a bivalent and a quadrivalent vaccine) are now licensed and currently in use in a number of countries. Both vaccines prevent infection with HPV-16 and HPV-18, which together cause approximately 70% of cervical cancers, and clinical trials have demonstrated 90%-100% efficacy in preventing precancerous cervical lesions attributable to HPV-16 and HPV-18. One vaccine also prevents HPV-6 and HPV-11, which cause 90% of genital

Human papillomavirus knowledge and awareness among undergraduates in healthcare training in New Zealand.

AIMS: To describe knowledge of HPV and its transmission, knowledge of the HPV vaccine, and awareness of free HPV vaccine for 12-18 year old New Zealand females; and to assess whether there are significant age and gender differences in HPV-related knowledge. METHODS: Undergraduate university students were invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire, after viewing a brief HPV vaccine TV commercial. RESULTS: Compared to 19 year olds, 18 years olds were more likely to have heard of HPV (OR=3.78; 95%CI=1.66-8.65) and the HPV vaccine (OR=3.94; 95%CI=1.85-8.39), know about sexual transmission of

Anogenital warts contributing to the risk of squamous intraepithelial lesions among HIV-positive women of São Paulo, Brazil.

Unsafe sexual practices may expose HIV-positive women to high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) and to infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types. A cross sectional study of 141 HIV-positive women was designed to evaluate risk factors for the development of cervico-vaginal SIL and HPV-DNA detection/typing. Uni- and multivariate forward stepwise analysis was used to determine the relationship between risk variables and HPV infection and between risk behaviour, HPV and HIV infection with development of SIL. Univariate analysis showed that HPV-DNA infection was related t

Detection of human papillomavirus DNA in benign oral squamous epithelial lesions in Venezuela.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in biopsies taken from clinically normal oral mucosa of 20 subjects and clinical lesions of 40 patients. PCR for HPV-DNA amplification was performed using consensus primers MYO9/MYO11 and subsequent typing for HPV of high and low oncogenic risk HPV types were identified by restriction enzyme analysis (restriction fragment length polymorphism, RFLP). The HPV viral genome was present in 55% (22/40) of the oral benign lesions (OBL) and in 10% (2/20) of the control samples. In the PCR+ OBL, we

Post-transcriptional induction of p21cip1 protein in condylomata and dysplasias is inversely related to human papillomavirus activities.

Infections of the genital and oral epithelia by human papillomaviruses cause condylomata, papillomas, and squamous intraepithelial neoplasms, some of which can progress to invasive cancers. We describe an induction of p21cip1/WAF1/sdi1 protein in a fraction of the spinous cells in benign lesions and in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades I and II. The induction appears to be post-transcriptional and independent of p53. p21cip1 antigen-positive cells were sporadic in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia III and rare and focal in carcinomas. In contrast, p21cip1 protein was below or at the t

Analysis of type-restricted and cross-reactive epitopes on virus-like particles of human papillomavirus type 33 and in infected tissues using monoclonal antibodies to the major capsid protein.

A panel of six monoclonal antibodies recognizing at least three different antigenic regions has been raised against the L1 major capsid protein of human papillomavirus type 33 (HPV-33), which is associated with cervical carcinoma. The antigenic sites defined by these antibodies have been mapped and classified as type-restricted or broadly cross-reactive using bacterially expressed L1 fusion proteins of a variety of HPV types. Conformational and linear epitopes have been distinguished using native and denatured virus-like particles. HPV infection of genital lesions has been analysed using both

Human papillomavirus virus (HPV) genotype- and age-specific analyses of external genital lesions among men in the HPV Infection in Men (HIM) Study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes external genital lesions (EGLs) in men, including condyloma and penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PeIN). We sought to determine the incidence of pathologically confirmed EGLs, by lesion type, among men in different age groups and to evaluate the HPV types that were associated with EGL development. METHODS: HPV Infection in Men (HIM) study participants who contributed ≥2 visits from 2009-2013 were included in the biopsy cohort. Genotyping by an HPV line-probe assay was performed on all pathologically confirmed EGLs. Age-specific analyses were condu

Mechanistic investigation of immunosuppression in patients with condyloma acuminata.

Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Previous studies have identified that the occurrence, relapse and cancerization of CA is relevant to immune imbalance caused by immune hypofunction or immunoregulatory dysfunction. However, to date, the specific mechanisms accounting for immune imbalance in CA patients have remained elusive. In the present study, changes in the expression levels of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and toll‑like receptors (TLRs) were determined in lesion tissues and peripheral blood sample
