Changes in dynamic foot pressure after surgical treatment of valgus deformity of the hindfoot in cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal lengthening osteotomy and extra-articular arthrodesis of the subtalar joint are two methods used for the correction of valgus deformity of the heel and forefoot abduction. The purpose of this study was to compare the operative results of these procedures in patients with cerebral palsy who were able to walk. We focused primarily on changes in radiographic parameters and how altered mobility of the subtalar joint by the two operative methods would modify pressure distribution over the plantar surface of the foot. METHODS: A total of eighty-one feet in forty-seven patients

The prevalence of foot problems in older women: a cause for concern.

BACKGROUND: Painful feet are an extremely common problem amongst older women. Such problems increase the risk of falls and hamper mobility. The aetiology of painful and deformed feet is poorly understood. METHODS: Data were obtained during a pilot case-control study about past high heel usage in women, in relation to osteoarthritis of the knee. A total of 127 women aged 50-70 were interviewed (31 cases, 96 controls); case-control sets were matched for age. The following information was obtained about footwear: (1) age when first wore shoes with heels 1, 2 and 3 inches high; (2) height of heel

Age-Related Changes in Neurologic Examination and Sensory Nerve Amplitude in the General Population: Aging of the Peripheral Nervous System.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic axonal polyneuropathy is a common disease of the peripheral nervous system with increasing prevalence with age. Typical neurologic signs are present in patients with polyneuropathy but may also occur in individuals without disease. Owing to limited knowledge on normal aging of the peripheral nervous system, it can be difficult to distinguish peripheral nerve dysfunction due to disease from variations in normal aging. Therefore, we described the changes in neurologic examination and nerve conduction studies that accompany aging in the general population. METH

The bacteriostatic effect of controlled-flux electrolyzed acidic solution on healthy hallucal skin.

BACKGROUND: There are various treatment protocols to manage the increased bacterial load in plantar ulcers. Recently, Controlled-Flux Electrolyzed Acidic Solution (CFEAS), with a pH less than 3, has appeared to be an effective option since its antimicrobial effect could help in the healing of those ulcers. In order to evaluate its potential in this sense, the aim of the present study was to compare bacterial growth on healthy hallucal skin using two types of bandaging (control and Controlled-Flux Electrolysed Acidic Solution). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a sample of 19 healthy subjects, two expe

An exploration of changes in plantar pressure distributions during walking with standalone and supported lateral wedge insole designs.

BACKGROUND: Lateral wedge insoles (LWI), standalone or with medial arch support (supported-LWI), have been thoroughly investigated for their effects on modifying gait biomechanics for people with knee osteoarthritis. However, plantar pressure distribution between these insole types has not been investigated and could provide insight towards insole prescription with concomitant foot symptoms taken into consideration. METHODS: In a sample of healthy individuals (n = 40), in-shoe plantar pressure was measured during walking with LWI, with or without medial arch support (variable- and uniform-sti

Test-retest reliability of an insole plantar pressure system to assess gait along linear and curved trajectories.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have assessed reliability of insole technology for evaluating foot pressure distribution during linear walking. Since in natural motion straight walking is intermingled with turns, we determined the test-retest reliability of insole assessment for curved as well as linear trajectories, and estimated the minimum number of steps required to obtain excellent reliability for each output variable. METHODS: Sixteen young healthy participants were recruited. Each performed, two days apart, two sessions of three walking conditions: linear (LIN) and curved, clockwise (CW)

First metatarsophalangeal joint range of motion is associated with lower limb kinematics in individuals with first metatarsophalangeal joint osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (1st MTP joint OA) is a common and disabling condition that results in pain and limited joint range of motion. There is inconsistent evidence regarding the relationship between clinical measurement of 1st MTP joint maximum dorsiflexion and dynamic function of the joint during level walking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the association between passive non-weightbearing (NWB) 1st MTP joint maximum dorsiflexion and sagittal plane kinematics in individuals with radiographically confirmed 1st MTP joint OA.
