BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration is one of the key interventions recommended by WHO to control certain NTDs. With most support from donors, health workers distribute antihelminthic drugs annually in Malawi. Mean community coverage of MDA from 2018 to 2020 was high at 87% for praziquantel and 82% for albendazole. However, once donor support diminishes sustaining these levels will be challenging. This study intended to compare the use of the community-directed intervention approach with the standard practice of using health workers in delivery of MDA campaigns.
METHODS: This was a controlle

INTRODUCTION: Ocular cysticercosis is a preventable cause of blindness. It is caused by parasitic infestation caused by the larval form of Taenia solium. Poor sanitation and improper management of food and meat products are the major causes for cysticercosis infestation.
CASE: Two cases of myocysticercosis presented to our hospital differently. A 12 years boy, first case presented with drooping of right eye (RE) upper lid with recurrent swelling, pain, redness with mild headache and intermittent vomiting for 1 and half months. On examination swelling of RE upper lid, mild ptosis, abaxial prop

The important role of microfilaria (worms) in human and animal disease remains an area of key disagreement between the naturopathic and allopathic physicians. While microfilaria infections are rampart in undeveloped countries, they rarely rise to identification as a cause of disease in Western countries. New research studies in the diagnosis and treatment of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) and (IBD) Inflammatory Bowel Diseases of ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease and microcytic colitis may make both sides equally correct. A study of rifaximin failures in SIBO positive individual

The anti-parasitic benzimidazole flubendazole has been used for many years to treat intestinal infections in humans and animals. Previous genotoxicity studies have shown that the compound is not a bacterial mutagen and a bone marrow micronucleus test, using a formulation that limited systemic absorption, was negative. The purpose of this study is to explore the genotoxicity of flubendazole and its main metabolites in in vitro micronucleus studies and to test a new oral formulation that improves systemic absorption in an in vivo micronucleus test. The isolated metabolites were also screened usi

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis is a rare but potentially severe parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, endemic in many countries in the northern hemisphere, including Switzerland. While the liver is most commonly affected, other organs can also be involved either by contiguity or haematogenous spread. To date, there is no epidemiological or clinical data on alveolar echinococcosis in the canton of Geneva.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the demographic, epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of alveolar echinococcosis in the canton of Gene

BACKGROUND: In the global program for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) longitudinal assessment of the prevalence of microfilaremia and antigenemia is recommended to monitor the effect of mass treatment on transmission. Additional monitoring tools such as entomologic and antibody methods may be useful in identifying residual foci of infection. In this study, we characterized serologic markers of infection and exposure spatially both before and after mass treatment, in an area of initial low Wuchereria bancrofti infection prevalence. METHODS: Consenting persons in the sentinel commun

BACKGROUND: Despite the progress achieved in scaling-up mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Ghana, communities with persistent LF still exist even after 10 years of community treatment. To understand the reasons for persistence, we conducted a study to assess the status of disease elimination and understand the adherence to interventions including MDA and insecticide treated nets.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a parasitological and epidemiological cross-sectional study in adults from eight villages still under MDA in the Northern Region savannah

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloides stercoralis is a globally distributed nematode that causes diverse clinical symptoms in humans. Spain, once considered an endemic country, has experienced a recent increase in imported cases. The introduction of serology helps diagnosis and is currently replacing microbiological techniques in some settings, but its sensitivity is variable and can be low in immunocompromised patients. Diagnosis can only be confirmed by identification of larvae. Often, this "gold standard" can only be achieved in severe cases, such as disseminated S.stercoralis infection, or S.stercor

OBJECTIVE: Although soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are endemic in Solomon Islands, there are few recent reports on their prevalence. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of STH in residents of remote communities in Solomon Islands.
METHODS: A cross-sectional convenience-sampled survey of residents of four adjacent villages in Malaita, Solomon Islands was performed in Atoifi and Na'au in April 2011 and in Abitona and Sifilo in April 2012. All residents older than one year were invited to participate, which involved providing a single sample of faeces examined using a modified Kato-Ka

A rare case of a 27-year-old male patient with disseminated sacral hydatidosis is presented. Because the diagnosis was missed initially, the patient underwent only partial resection of the tumour to obtain tissue for histology. The resection was followed by deep wound infection, and re-exploration had to be performed, thereby resecting the remaining cyst tissue and the S1-S3 vertebral bodies. Adjuvant anti-helminthic therapy was started postoperatively. Unfortunately, the hydatid cyst further progressed and could only be controlled with multiple decompression procedures and continuance of anti

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.). The treatment of CE mainly relies on the use of benzimidazoles, which can commonly cause adverse side effects. Therefore, more efficient treatment options are needed. Drug repurposing is a useful approach for advancing drug development. We have evaluated the in vitro protoscolicidal effects of tropisetron and granisetron in E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) and assessed the expression of the calcineurin (CaN) and calmodulin (CaM) genes, both of which have been linked t

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are widely distributed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and constitute a serious public health problem. As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), before launching mass chemotherapy to control these diseases, parasitological surveys were conducted in sentinel sites in six health zones (HZs) in Bandundu and Maniema provinces. Baseline prevalence and intensity of infection for SCH and STH were determined to establish the appropriate treatment plan using Praziquantel (PZQ) and Albendazole (ALB).

Lymphatic filariasis is a disease of considerable socioeconomic burden in the tropics. Presently used antifilarial drugs are able to strongly reduce transmission and will thus ultimately lower the burden of morbidity associated with the infection, however, a chemotherapeutic principle that directly induces a halt or improvement in the progression of the morbidity in already infected individuals would constitute a major lead. In search of such a more-effective drug to complement the existing ones, in an area endemic for bancroftian filariasis in Ghana, 33 microfilaremic and 18 lymphedema patien

Brain involvement in hydatid disease accounts for 1-2% of all Echinococcus granulosus infections. Extradural localization remains exceptional, particularly when associated with intra-axial dissemination or infection. Here, we report the complete clinical course over 4 years of a pediatric patient who presented sequentially with a primary osteolytic extradural complicated hydatid cyst, likely via microscopic dural disruption or hematogenous seeding, and subsequently underwent customized low-cost acrylic cranioplasty using a 3D-printed mold. At final follow-up (4 years post-initial presentation,

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic disease that has been targeted for elimination through the Mass Drug Administration (MDA.) Although the MDA started in the Ankobra community in Ghana in 2000, LF prevalence as reported in 2014 was relatively high (4.5%). Non-compliance to the MDA has been associated with the persistent LF prevalence in endemic regions.
OBJECTIVE: This study determined the factors associated with the non-compliance to the MDA among patients living in the Ankobra community, Ghana.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a one-stage cluster sampling method was

BACKGROUND: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate a possible association of Schistosoma haematobium with child growth development and describe a plausible schistosomiasis-related anemia in children and adults in a highly schistosomiasis endemic area of Mali.
METHODS: Urine, feces and blood samples from 399 participants of both sexes (2-40 years of age) were analyzed and supplemented by anthropometric measurements.
RESULTS: S. haematobium prevalence was 79.8%, S. mansoni 13.2% and Plasmodium falciparum 80.2%. S. haematobium infection intensity as five categories was signifi

BACKGROUND: Worms may protect against allergy. Early-life worm exposure may be critical, but this has not been fully investigated.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether worms in pregnancy and in early childhood are associated with childhood eczema incidence.
METHODS: The Entebbe Mother and Baby Study, an anthelminthic treatment trial, enrolled pregnant women between 2003 and 2005 in Uganda. Mothers were investigated for worms during pregnancy and children annually. Eczema was doctor-diagnosed from birth to age five years. A planned observational analysis was conducted within the trial cohort to
