Streptococcus suis in slaughter pigs and abattoir workers.

The detection and identification of Streptococcus suis type 2 in 8.1% of 347 pig herds of southwestern Ontario revealed that the infection is widespread in this area. A herd suspected to be infected showed a carrier rate of 9.7% among the 62 animals sampled. These subclinical carriers represent a potential source of infection for slaughterhouse workers. From studies of contamination of hands and knives, it was concluded that eviscerators involved in removing the larynx and lungs from the carcasses have a significantly higher (p less than or equal to 0.05) risk of exposure to Streptococcus suis

Vaccine prophylaxis of abattoir-associated Q fever.

Q fever is an important cause of morbidity in Australian meatworkers; recently there have been sharp outbreaks of Q fever in abattoirs in several states. In an attempt to control Q fever by vaccination, 924 nonimmune volunteers at two South Australian abattoirs were inoculated with one dose of a purified, formalin-inactivated, Coxiella burneti, Henzerling strain, phase 1 vaccine. Some 56% of workers in one abattoir, and 64% in the other, seroconverted after vaccination. In the 18 months after vaccination, no Q fever occurred in fully vaccinated subjects, whereas there were 34 cases in 1349 unv

Abattoir-Level Beef Cattle Handling and Its Impact on Meat Quality: A Comparative Analysis of Three Abattoirs of Eastern Amhara, Ethiopia.

Meat quality encompasses a set of attributes preferred and evaluated by consumers based on nutritional value, conformation, sensory appeal, and safety. This research was conducted between 2024 and 2025. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an observational study and pH evaluation of meat. Of the six welfare indicators assessed on 384 beef cattle, slipping, beating, trekking distance, and time of rest at lairage were significantly different among the abattoirs. The pH measurements of meat samples (N = 75) indicated that more than half (n = 41, 54.7%) of the total sample was found to be d

Seroprevalence of hepatitis E in swine abattoir workers.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E (HE) caused by Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging global public health threat. It has been identified as potentially zoonotic and swine act as main reservoirs. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with HEV in swine abattoir workers. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study where 45 workers were sampled (N=50), serum collected and tested for presence of anti HEV IgM using ELISA. RESULTS: A seroprevalence of 13.3% was obtained with the highest 50% among slaughterers and the lowest amongst sanitary

An abattoir survey of ovine reproductive tracts in Ireland.

Reproductive tracts were collected from 870 ewes slaughtered at an abattoir in County Dublin over a 9-m.o. period from September 1993 to June 1994. Ovarian activity was evident in 59.3% of the tracts examined. The mean ovulation rate was 1.26 +/- 0.045 (mean +/- SEM). The spatial relationship between corpora lutea (CL) and dominant follicles was established. Ten percent of the ewes examined were pregnant. Embryonic transuterine migration was observed in 12% of the single ovulating ewes and in all ewes pregnant with twins which had double ovulations on one ovary. Based on the observation of tra

Abattoir survey of congenital reproductive abnormalities in ewes.

A survey of abnormalities of the reproductive tract of female sheep was undertaken at two abattoirs in the south west of England over a period of 12 months. During the survey, 9970 reproductive tracts from cull ewes and 23,536 tracts from nulliparous sheep (prime lambs and hoggets) were examined. A total of 655 (6.57 per cent) ewes and 459 (1.95 per cent) nulliparous sheep had abnormalities of the reproductive tract. Of these, congenital abnormalities of the paramesonephric ducts accounted for 2.4 per cent of the ewes and 7.4 per cent of the nulliparous sheep, congenital abnormalities of the o

Mycoplasma hyosynoviae in joints with arthritis in abattoir baconers.

The occurrence of Mycoplasma hyosynoviae in synovial fluid of baconers with chronic arthritis was studied at an abattoir. Cultural examination of synovial fluid samples from diseased tarsal joints of 50 animals from 42 herds yielded M. hyosynoviae in 10 cases from 8 herds. Streptococci were found in 6 cases from 6 other herds. M. hyosynoviae antigen was found in 1 of 47 of the samples, and antibody to the mycoplasma was found in 14 of 40 of the samples by ELISA test. The presence of M. hyosynoviae in a joint was usually accompanied by the corresponding antibody. In joints with streptococcal in

Fatal Streptococcus suis septicemia in an abattoir worker.

A 51-year-old abattoir worker became ill with high fever and was admitted to hospital late in the evening, where he died 4 h later. Smears of peripheral blood taken 7 h after death showed numerous cocci. Cultures of the blood grew beta-hemolytic streptococci exhibiting the biochemical properties of Streptococcus suis II. A complete autopsy with extensive microscopical studies showed numerous bacteria in small vessels of several organs, but no bacterial colonisation of tissues, meningitis, or other relevant lesions were found. The group R antigen of the bacteria could be demonstrated by immunof

Lymphoreticular lesions in beef cattle at an ontario abattoir.

During the period April 1983 to March 1986, lymphoreticular lesions in cattle were surveyed at an Ontario abattoir. Postmortem examination of 171,157 cattle revealed macroscopic lesions in 696 animals (0.4%). The most frequent finding was abscessation of a single lymph node, a finding that was observed in 353 cases (50.7% of animals with lesions/0.2% of total slaughter). Actinobacillary granulomas were present in 252 lymph nodes (36.2%/0.1%). Other specific lesions included mycobacteriosis and mycotic or parasitic lymphadenitis. Cases of nonspecific chronic lymphadenitis or granulomas in lymph

Tuberculosis in slaughtered cattle and workers in some abattoirs of Baghdad governorate.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (the white plague) is regarded as one of the most widespread infectious diseases and continues to be a leading cause of death and the most prominent public health problem worldwide. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, which refers to a group of seven species; one of them known as Mycobacterium bovis-the cause of bovine-type tuberculosis-has an exceptionally wide host range. It infects cattle, humans, goats, cats, dogs, buffalo, and deer. Many susceptible species, including man, are spillover hosts in which infection is not self-maintaining. Th

Human and canine echinococcosis infection in informal, unlicensed abattoirs in Lima, Peru.

Echinococcus granulosus infections are a major public health problem in livestock-raising regions around the world. The life cycle of this tapeworm is sustained between dogs (definitive host, canine echinococcosis), and herbivores (intermediary host, cystic hydatid disease). Humans may also develop cystic hydatid disease. Echinococcosis is endemic in rural areas of Peru; nevertheless, its presence or the extension of the problem in urban areas is basically unknown. Migration into Lima, an 8-million habitant's metropolis, creates peripheral areas where animals brought from endemic areas are sla

Taenia saginata prevalence in cattle slaughtered at low throughput abattoirs in South Africa.

Meat inspection is the routine method used to identify cattle infected with Taenia saginata; however, the sensitivity of this method is low. We investigated the prevalence of T. saginata infection in cattle slaughtered in low throughput abattoirs (LTs) in Gauteng province, South Africa, based on meat inspection and serology. A total of 188 cattle carcasses from three abattoirs underwent meat inspection for the presence of T. saginata cysticerci, while serum was tested for the occurrence of antigens using antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Ag-ELISA). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-sequ
