Core Needle Biopsy of the Abdominal Fat Pad for Diagnosis of Amyloidosis.

Amyloidosis is a rare systemic disorder that is underdiagnosed and whose incidence is increasing as the population ages. The reference standard for diagnosis is endomyocardial biopsy, though its utility as a screening tool is limited. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) and surgical excisional biopsy (SEB) of the abdominal fat pad have emerged as alternatives to endomyocardial biopsy as screening tools for amyloidosis. Given concerns about the variable sensitivity of FNA and the more invasive nature of SEB, our referring providers asked our group to perform core needle biopsies (CNB) of the abdominal

Association of Abdominal Myosteatosis and Visceral Fat Obesity with Arterial Stiffness.

BACKGRUOUND: Arterial stiffness with aging predicts cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and target organ damage. While sarcopenia has been linked to arterial stiffness, the association of myosteatosis and visceral adiposity with arterial stiffness remains underexplored. As age-related fat redistribution, including myosteatosis and visceral obesity, often precedes overt sarcopenia, their early evaluation may be beneficial in preventing arterial stiffness. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to assess whether myosteatosis and visceral obesity are associated with increased arterial stiffness.

Does abdominal obesity cause increase in the amount of epidural fat?

It is known that epidural fat does not alter in obese people. This study aims to find out a possible relationship with epidural fat and abdominal obesity. In this cross-sectional study, 63 patients who were referred to our clinic for lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination were evaluated. Patients with the history of steroid treatment, thyroid disease or Cushing disease were excluded. Waist circumferences (WC), body weight and height were measured and subsequently body-mass index (BMI) was calculated (kg/m(2)). On midsagittal T1-weighted images, anterior epidural fat (AEF), posteri

Differential diagnosis of fat-containing lesions with abdominal and pelvic CT.

Recognition of fat within an organ or lesion on abdominal and pelvic computed tomographic scans is an important clue to guiding a differential diagnosis. A systematic approach to these lesions, including a patient's age and clinical history, along with the appearance and location of the lesion often allows a specific differential diagnosis. The anatomic sites of origin for these lesions are the gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system, and retroperitoneum. Some of the more common entities include various forms of fatty change in the liver, fibrofatty mesenteric proliferation in Crohn disea

Use of abdominal fat tissue aspirate in the diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis.

The needle aspirate of abdominal fat was investigated for its sensitivity in giving a tissue diagnosis in 32 consecutive patients with systemic amyloidosis. The fat tissue aspirate was stained with Congo red and examined with a polarizing microscope. Positive results were obtained in 95% (18/19) of patients with primary (AL) amyloidosis, 66% (4/6) of patients with secondary (AA) amyloidosis, and 86% (6/7) of patients with the heredofamilial (AF) form. The overall positive yield was 88% (28/32). Abdominal fat tissue aspiration is proposed as a simple, rapid, and effective technique for the diag

Structures of dye-bound transthyretin amyloid fibrils from abdominal fat biopsies.

Transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis is a protein misfolding disease characterized by amyloid fibril deposition in vital organs, leading to cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). Early diagnosis of ATTR-CM remains challenging due to lack of sensitive, rapid screening methods. Here, we report cryo-EM structures of TTR amyloid fibrils extracted from minimally invasive abdominal fat-pad biopsies of three living Ala97Ser ATTR-CM patients. The adipose-derived fibril structures closely mirror those from diseased post-mortem cardiac tissues, validating the use of fat-pad biopsies to investigate the atomic structure of

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Abdominal Subcutaneous Fat Thickness During Pregnancy.

Objective: Current evidence regarding the safety of abdominal subcutaneous injections in pregnant women is limited. In this study, we developed a predictive model for abdominal skin-subcutaneous fat thickness (S-ScFT) by gestational periods (GP) in pregnant women. Methods: A total of 354 cases were measured for S-ScFT. Three machine learning algorithms, namely deep learning, random forest, and support vector machine, were used for S-ScFT predictive modeling and factor analysis for each abdominal site. Data analysis was performed using SPSS and RapidMiner softwares. Results: The deep learning a

Abdominal Massage Ameliorates Inguinal Fat Accumulation via Augmentation of PPARγ Signaling in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

PURPOSE: With the increase in prevalence and decrease in age of the obese population, safer weight loss methods have attracted growing attention. While abdominal massage (AM) has been clinically proven for weight loss, the mechanism thereof has yet to be elucidated. We aimed to investigate the effect of AM on abdominal fat in obese mice fed a high-fat diet and explore the possible mechanisms involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet for 16 weeks and then treated with AM for 5 weeks; mice fed a standard diet were used as normal controls. Blood and adipose tis

CircRNA Profiling Identifies Candidates Associated with Abdominal Fat Deposition in Ducks.

Excessive abdominal fat deposition reduces the meat yield and feed conversion efficiency of meat ducks. To identify circRNAs associated with this trait, this study performed circRNA sequencing on abdominal fat tissue from fat-type (HF) and lean-type (LF) Peking ducks. Among the 16,513 identified circRNAs, a total of 212 differentially expressed (DE) circRNAs were screened between the HF and LF groups. The host genes of the DEcircRNAs were enriched in processes such as glycerol metabolism, lipid storage, and lipolysis, and were involved in the AMPK, Wnt, insulin, and MAPK signaling pathways. RT

Abdominal fat and sympathetic overactivity. From calorie intake to postmenopausal hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies have found an association between overweight and increased mortality arising primarily from cardiovascular disorders. A major determinant is a chronically raised sympathetic nervous system activity which can arise from calorie intake-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Calorie-dependent parameters reflecting sympathetic overactivity are an increased body fat mass and body mass index. VISCERAL FAT: Although influenced by calorie intake to a certain extent, visceral fat accumulation is a mechanism which is determined also by estrogen deficiency (postmenopaus

Abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness as a substitute for BMI in predicting complications in abdominally-based autologous breast reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Patient selection for autologous tissue transfer for postmastectomy breast reconstruction often utilizes body mass index (BMI) to risk stratify patients, though it only estimates fat content and does not address fat distribution. This study aims to identify a measurement of abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness (ASFT) from preoperative computed tomography (CT) angiography imaging to better predict complications. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent an abdominal microvascular free flap breast reconstruction was performed. The average of the bilateral distances

Fat phenomics reveals shared genetic architecture of abdominal fat and yolk lipids: Insight into the potential for divergent selection.

Excessive abdominal fat deposition reduces production efficiency and metabolic health, whereas yolk lipid content is directly linked to egg quality and reproductive output. These two fat-related traits are often in conflict from a breeding perspective, yet whether they share common genetic and molecular determinants-and whether such sharing could inform divergent selection for lean abdomen with lipid‑rich yolk-remains unclear. Here, we analyzed 22 fat deposition-related traits in a population of 248 laying hens, together with genome-wide genotyping data, transcriptomic data from 10 tissues. Ou

Hepatic fat is a stronger correlate of key clinical and molecular abnormalities than visceral and abdominal subcutaneous fat in youth.

INTRODUCTION: Body fat distribution is strongly associated with cardiometabolic disease (CMD), but the relative importance of hepatic fat as an underlying driver remains unclear. Here, we applied a systems biology approach to compare the clinical and molecular subnetworks that correlate with hepatic fat, visceral fat, and abdominal subcutaneous fat distribution. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional sub-study of 283 children/adolescents (7-19 years) from the Yale Pediatric NAFLD Cohort. Untargeted, high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) was performed on plasma and combined with
