Massive appendiceal mucinous neoplasm diagnosed after abdominal trauma: Pitfalls in imaging and diagnosis.

Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare tumor presenting typically with symptoms of acute appendicitis. A 33-year-old gentleman presented with abdominal fullness and discomfort secondary to abdominal trauma obtained during boxing training. Investigations with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and colonoscopy revealed a large cystic lesion in the ascending colon mesentery with unclear continuation with the appendix. There were no obvious features of malignancy. Laparoscopy revealed a large, firm mass connected to the appendix with enlarged lymph nodes, and the patie

Comparison of abdominal ultrasonographic findings with endoscopic ultrasonographic findings of solid pseudopapillary neoplasms of the pancreas.

To compare abdominal ultrasonographic (AU) findings with endoscopic ultrasonographic (EUS) findings of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas, 13 patients (male-to-female ratio, 3:10; mean age, 36 years) with surgically proven SPN who underwent both preoperative AU and EUS were included in the study. Ultrasonographic findings of the 2 modalities were compared according to internal echogenicity, calcification, demarcation, internal septum, and main pancreatic duct dilatation. Nine cases showed hypoechogenicity on both AU and EUS. The remaining 4 cases showed different echogenicity

Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in diagnosis of abdominal and pelvic neoplasm in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy of abdominal and pelvic masses in adults has gained tremendous popularity. However, the application of the same treatment in children is not as popular because of apprehensions regarding inadequate tissues for the biopsy and accidental puncture of vital organs. METHODS: Data of the application of ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in 105 pediatric patients with clinically or ultrasound-diagnosed abdominopelvic masses were reviewed. Diagnostic procedures were conducted in our institution from May 2011 to May 2013. RESULTS: The biopsies were c

Abdominal venous thrombosis presenting in myeloproliferative neoplasm with JAK2 V617F mutation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: An unprovoked thombotic event in a patient is cause for further evaluation of an underlying hypercoaguable state. The investigation should include a thorough search, including checking for a variety of known inherited and acquired hypercoaguble states (protein C or S deficiency, anti-phospholipid antibodies, and anti-thrombin III deficiency) and gene mutations that predispose patients to an increased risk of clotting (for example, prothrombin gene 20210 mutation, factor V Leiden, and the JAK2 V617F mutation). CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 38-year-old Caucasian woman

Torsion of Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: A Rare Cause of Right Lower Quadrant Abdominal Pain.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare, and torsion of the appendix is exceptionally uncommon. Rupture of an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm can lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei, a condition with high morbidity. We present the case of a 64-year-old male patient with five days of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Cross-sectional imaging of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a five-centimeter-long, tubular, ring-enhancing lesion, concerning for a mucocele. Intraoperatively, a 360-degree appendiceal torsion was identified, prompting conversion from laparoscopy to laparotomy to avoid mucocele rupture

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the uterine corpus presenting as a huge abdominal neoplasm.

A 45-year-old P3L3, referred to us with abdominopelvic mass for further management. Vaginal examination was suggestive of uterine mass. Magnetic resonance imaging. (MRI) of abdomen.pelvis disclosed a uterine mass with equivocal invasion of the fat plane with the sigmoid colon. Coelomic antigen. (CA) 125 was 120.2 U/ml. (normal range, 0-35 U/ml). On exploratory laparotomy entire pelvic cavity was filled with a mass that was seen arising from the uterus and involving the sigmoid colon. Hence, a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oopphorectomy. (TAH BSO) was performed, along wit

INTRODUCTION: Gossypibomas or textilomas are materials remain in the abdomen after surgery. It is very difficult to assess its impact due to medico-legal implications, hence the interest in the publication of this type of pathology. CLINICAL CASE: Women of 76 years who had undergone a hysterectomy and double anexectomy 6 months before admission to our hospital, apparently without perioperative complications. When she was assessed in our hospital she had a clinical picture simulating a malignancy. In our case, the patient had signs and symptoms of advanced intra-abdominal malignancy, such as c

Risk of radiation-induced second malignant neoplasms from photon and proton radiotherapy in paediatric abdominal neuroblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: State-of-the-art radiotherapy modalities have the potential of reducing late effects of treatment in childhood cancer survivors. Our aim was to investigate the carcinogenic risk associated with 3D conformal (photon) radiation (3D-CRT), intensity modulated arc therapy (IMAT) and pencil beam scanning proton therapy (PBS-PT) in the treatment of paediatric abdominal neuroblastoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The risk of radiation-induced second malignant neoplasm (SMN) was estimated using the concept of organ equivalent dose (OED) for eleven organs (lungs, rectum, colon, stomac

Tumor thrombus of the inferior vena cava secondary to malignant abdominal neoplasms: US and CT evaluation.

Nineteen patients with histologically proved tumor thrombi of the inferior vena cava (IVC) secondary to abdominal neoplasms were studied with the use of ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). The primary neoplasms were renal cell carcinoma (13 cases), adrenal tumors (two cases), retroperitoneal tumors (two cases), and hepatic tumors (two cases). A positive diagnosis of tumor thrombus was achieved by both methods. The cranial extent of the tumor thrombus was better demonstrated by US studies, which showed echogenic endoluminal material within an enlarged IVC with a bulging anterior

Total abdominal colectomy to facilitate complete cytoreduction in 56 patients with mucinous appendiceal neoplasms with peritoneal metastases.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy are currently the standard of care for management of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms with peritoneal metastases. The goal of the CRS is complete removal of all visible disease through the use of peritonectomy procedures and visceral resections. One of the major resections that may be required is total abdominal colectomy (TAC). METHODS: From a database and secured files of patients having a complete CRS, all patients who had TAC were identified. The clinical and histologic variables associated with these pat

From the archives of the AFIP: abdominal neoplasms in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common genetic disorders. NF1 is a complex disease resulting from a spectrum of mutations that may occur at many locations along the large, complex NF1 gene, which is located on chromosome 17. Mutations of the NF1 gene lead to abnormal tumor suppression. Consequently, patients with NF1 have an increased prevalence of benign and malignant neoplasms throughout the body. There are five categories of NF1 tumors that occur in the abdomen: neurogenic, neuroendocrine, nonneurogenic gastrointestinal mesenchymal, embryonal, and miscellaneous. Many of th

Acute and late toxicity of patients with inflammatory bowel disease undergoing irradiation for abdominal and pelvic neoplasms.

PURPOSE: Little data exists in the medical literature describing the response of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to abdominal and pelvic irradiation. To clarify the use of this modality in this setting, this study assesses the short- and long-term tolerance of 28 patients with IBD to abdominal and pelvic irradiation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1970 to 1999, 28 patients with IBD (10 patients-Crohn's disease, 18 patients-ulcerative colitis) were identified and underwent external beam abdominal or pelvic irradiation. Mean follow-up time after radiation therapy was 32 months. Pati

Intra-abdominal ectopic bronchogenic cyst with a mucinous neoplasm harboring a GNAS mutation: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital cysts caused by abnormal sprouting from the ventral foregut during fetal life. They usually occur in the mediastinum or lung, but there are very rare cases of ectopic bronchogenic cysts that develop in the abdominal cavity. A unique intra-abdominal ectopic bronchogenic cyst with a mucinous neoplasm that was producing carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), harboring a GNAS mutation, is reported. The present case may contribute to clarifying the mechanism of tumorigenesis and malignant transformation of ectopic bronchogenic cysts. CASE SUMMARY: In 2007, a

[Plain abdominal film in neoplasms of the large bowel. - A comparative study with a population of normal subjects (author's transl)].

A comparative study was performed between plain abdominal films of 110 patients with neoplasms of the large bowel and 52 normal subjects for control. In neoplasms of the right colon the failed spontaneous visualization of caecum and ascendent colon or the direct recognization of lume's deformation allow us to suspect such a lesions in about 90% of the cases. Neoplasms of the other tracts of the large bowel may be suspected only when plain abdominal film demonstrates direct evidence of an obstruction: in about 25% of the cases.

Co-existence of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm with Urologic Neoplasm: Which Should Be Treated First in the Endovascular Era?

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) with concomitant malignancy rounds 3-13%. Considering only urological neoplasms the prevalence is around 3.6%. Survival at 5 years of bladder carcinoma without extravesical invasion (stage II) rounds 63%. Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR), due to its minimally invasive profile, is an option for treatment of AAA prior to urological surgery as it does not require laparotomy not conditioning the delay of oncologic surgery. METHODS: Male, 62 years old. History of smoking and coronary artery disease and urothelial carcinoma of the bladd

Symptomatic Cushing syndrome and hyperandrogenemia revealing steroid cell ovarian neoplasm with late intra-abdominal metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Steroid cell tumors of ovary account for less than 0.1% of all ovarian tumors and these tumours may present at any age in association with interesting presentations related to hormonal activities. The subtype, not otherwise specified (NOS), is associated with androgenic changes in 56-77% and Cushing syndrome in 6-10%. Due to the rarity of available data regarding these tumors, little is known about their malignant potential and metastatic behaviour. We hereby report an unusual metastasis of steroid cell ovarian neoplasm presented with both Cushing syndrome and hyperandrogenemia. C
