Exercise and Transversus Abdominis Muscle Atrophy after 60-d Bed Rest.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate atrophy in the deep abdominal muscles, spinal extensors, and the effect of high-load resistive exercise with and without whole-body vibration after 60 d of strict bed rest. METHODS: Twenty-four subjects underwent 60 d of head-down tilt bed rest and performed either resistive vibration exercise (RVE), resistive exercise only (RE), or no exercise control (2nd Berlin BedRest Study). The thickness of the transversus abdominis, internal oblique, and erector spinae muscles and the area of the multifidus muscle were measured bilaterally via real-time ultrasou

Trunk extensor muscle fatigue influences trunk muscle activities.

BACKGROUND: Trunk muscles fatigue is one of the risk factors in workplaces and daily activities. Loads would be redistributed among active and passive tissues in a non-optimal manner in fatigue conditions. Therefore, a single tissue might be overloaded with minimal loads and as a result the risk of injury would increase. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this paper was to assess the electromyographic response of trunk extensor and abdominal muscles after trunk extensor muscles fatigue induced by cyclic lifting task. METHODS: This was an experimental study that twenty healthy women participated. For ass

Subcostal nerve injury after laparoscopic lipoma surgery: an unusual culprit for an unusual complication.

Endoscopic surgery has revolutionized the field of minimally invasive surgery. Nerve injury after laparoscopic surgery is presumably rare, with only scarce reports in the literature; however, the use of these techniques for new purposes presents the opportunity for novel complications. The authors report a case of subcostal nerve injury after an anterior laparoscopic approach to a posterior abdominal wall lipoma.A 62-year-old woman presented with a left abdominal flank bulge (pseudohernia) that developed after laparoscopic posterior flank wall lipoma resection. Imaging demonstrated frank ballo

Ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin injections for abdominal spasticity and dyspnea in an ambulatory patient with an incomplete cervical spinal cord injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal spasticity in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients may remain unrecognized, despite its impact on quality of life. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 47-year-old white Dutch man with incomplete C4 SCI (AIS D) presenting with dyspnea, abdominal pain, and discomfort from involuntary abdominal muscle contractions. Five year post-injury, the patient developed bloating and pronounced abdominal pain, pain in the lower back, and in the intercostal muscles. In addition, a 7-cm diastasis developed in the abdominal midline. These complaints reduced ambulatory capacity and quality of life

Non-traumatic myositis ossificans circumscripta in the anterior abdominal wall of a seven-year-old Ugandan child: A case report.

Myositis ossificans circumscripta (MOC) is a benign and self-limiting heterotopic ossification in the subcutaneous fat, tendons, muscles, and nerves. It is commonly due to trauma and is frequently encountered in the arm, shoulder, thigh, and hand which are prone to trauma. Non-traumatic MOC arising from the abdominal muscles is extremely rare. We report a case of 7-year-old male child with a three-year history of progressive painless abdominal swelling in the left hypochondria region with no history of associated trauma. CT scan of the abdomen showed a well-defined hyperdense mass in the left

Abdominal wall ectopic testis torsion mimicking a Spigelian hernia in an adult.

We report an unusual case of an ectopic testis identified in a 37-year-old man presenting with acute severe right iliac fossa pain and an irreducible mass. Initially diagnosed as a Spigelian hernia, computed tomography and ultrasonography identified the presence of an ectopic testis in the abdominal wall. Interparietal testicular ectopia is an extremely rare condition. We present and discuss the first case in the literature of an ectopic testis located between the internal and external oblique muscle layers of the anterior abdominal wall in an adult.

Influence of elastic lumbar support belts on trunk muscle function in patients with non-specific acute lumbar back pain.

BACKGROUND: A well-known supportive treatment for acute nonspecific back pain, elastic back support belts, are valued for their ability to accelerate natural self-healing, but there are concerns of a deconditioning effect due to their reliance on passive stabilization. METHODS: To evaluate the systematic effects of elastic abdominal belts on the trunk musculature, a total of 36 persons with acute lumbar back pain (no longer than one week) were divided into two groups: an abdominal belt wearing group (B) and a non-abdominal belt wearing control group (C). All were examined over a period of thr

Electromyographic Comparison of an Abdominal Rise on a Ball with a Traditional Crunch.

We propose a new exercise, the abdominal rise on the ball, to replace the traditional crunch in exercise programs. The aim of this study is to compare the activity of the abdominal muscles when performing an ARB with the same activity when performing a traditional crunch. Twenty healthy adults participated in the study. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the upper and lower rectus abdominis (URA, LRA), internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), transversus abdominis (TrA), and erector spinae (ES). EMG values were normalized to maximal voluntary isometric contraction. A paired

Change in onset times of the abdominal muscles following functional task in lumbar spinal stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the onset times of the abdominal muscle following a rapid arm task in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). In total, 32 patients with LSS were recruited from W oriental hospital. Muscle activity onset of the internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO) muscles was measured by electromyography (EMG) activity with a rapid arm movement and during the performance of a walking task. The LSS group demonstrated a significantly later onset of the IO, EO, and rectus abdominal (RA) muscles than the normal group. The deltoid reaction time of the

Image-guided botulinum toxin injection in the lateral abdominal wall prior to abdominal wall reconstruction surgery: review of techniques and results.

Ventral hernias represent the most common complication after abdominal surgery. Loss of domain and/or large ventral hernias in patients are especially challenging for surgeons to manage, but preoperative image-guided botulinum toxin injection has emerged as an effective adjunct to abdominal wall surgery. Loss of domain is caused by chronic muscle retraction of the lateral abdominal wall and leads to an irreducible protrusion of abdominal viscera into the hernia sac. Botulinum toxin can be used in the oblique muscles as a chemical component relaxation technique to aid abdominal wall reconstruct

Altered transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscle activation during cervical motor control tasks in individuals with chronic neck pain: A surface EMG-based analysis.

BackgroundChronic neck pain (CNP) is associated with disturbances in cervical motor control and altered postural strategies. However, little is known about how cervical motor demands influence the recruitment of deep abdominal stabilizers. This study examined the activation of the transversus abdominis-internal oblique (TrA-IO) during isolated and combined cervical-trunk motor tasks in individuals with CNP.ObjectiveTo compare TrA-IO activation during the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) and ADIM combined with the craniocervical flexion test (CCFT) between individuals with CNP and healthy c

Main force directions of trunk muscles: A pilot study in healthy male subjects.

Muscles work most effectively along their anatomically defined action vector(s) which has implications in training and therapeutics. Action vectors can easily be identified in extremity muscles and smaller muscles of the trunk, but are less clear in larger trunk muscles. Trunk muscle exercises and diagnostics have traditionally relied on tasks in the sagittal plane - a practice that is being reconsidered. Therefore, this study aimed at identifying main force directions (MFDs) of major trunk muscles expressed in terms of deviation from the sagittal plane. 20 healthy male subjects underwent grad

Mechanisms of postprandial abdominal bloating and distension in functional dyspepsia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome and abdominal bloating exhibit abnormal responses of the abdominal wall to colonic gas loads. We hypothesised that in patients with postprandial bloating, ingestion of a meal triggers comparable abdominal wall dyssynergia. Our aim was to characterise abdominal accommodation to a meal in patients with postprandial bloating. DESIGN: A test meal (0.8 kcal/ml nutrients plus 27 g/litre polyethylenglycol 4000) was administered at 50 ml/min as long as tolerated in 10 patients with postprandial bloating (fulfilling Rome III criteria for postprandial d
