The abducens nerve (AN; cranial nerve VI) exits the brainstem at the inferior pontine sulcus, pierces the dura of the posterior cranial fossa, passes through the cavernous sinus in close contact to the internal carotid artery (ICA) and traverses the superior orbital fissure to reach the orbit to innervate the lateral rectus muscle. At its exit from the brainstem, the AN includes only axons from lower motor neurons in the abducens nucleus. However, as the AN crosses the ICA it receives a number of branches from the internal carotid sympathetic plexus. The arrangement, neurochemical profile and

Through the use of a chronic microdrive recording system, neuronal unit activity was recorded throughout the brainstem of the rabbit during performance of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane (NM) extension/eyeblink response using an acoustical conditioned stimulus (CS) and a corneal airpuff unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Regions which exhibited neuronal responses near the onset of the learned response were found to be relatively localized to: the abducens, accessory abducens, and facial nuclei (the motoneurons known to innervate the muscles responsible for expression of the conditi

Recent electrophysiological studies in the turtle Chrysemys picta have suggested that a neural correlate of the eye-blink reflex can be evoked in an in vitro brain-stem-cerebellum preparation by electrical rather than natural stimulation of the cranial nerves. Discharge recorded in the abducens nerve, which is similar to EMG recordings from extraocular muscles during eye retraction, is triggered by a brief electrical stimulus applied to the ipsilateral trigeminal nerve. Evidence also suggests that pairing a one-second electrical stimulus applied to the posterior eighth nerve immediately prior

We have previously demonstrated that circumscribed structural and functional abnormalities exist in the brainstem auditory system of albino cats. Anomalies in the auditory brainstem evoked response of albino cats were correlated with anatomical defects in the medial superior olivary nucleus (MSO) of the same animals. To examine whether a similar syndrome is present in other albino mammals, we studied the MSO of albino and pigmented rabbits using both Nissl-stained and Golgi-impregnated material. Neurons in the MSO of the albinos were significantly smaller (24%) than those in the pigmented rabb

The effects of the chronic section of the VIth nerve have been studied in kittens with the help of the horseradish peroxidase intra-axonal retrograde tracing method. Two months following the section of the VIth nerve, only 50% of the abducens motoneuron population was left. However, shapes, somata sizes and cell distribution through the nucleus of the remaining neurons were similar to those shown by controls. Functional implications of the findings are discussed.

Lesions of the brain stem can either affect the nuclei or the fascicles of the third, fourth or sixth cranial nerves and thus produce ocular motor disorders. Lesions of the oculomotor nuclear complex differ from lesions of the third nerve, since the motoneurones in the nucleus are specifically grouped. Similarly, a lesion of the sixth nerve nucleus results in a conjugate gaze palsy and not in an abducens palsy, because of 'interneurones' being intermingled with the abducens motoneurons. Isolated lesions of a nerve fascicle, which is the part of the cranial nerve running through the brain stem,

The cobalt labeling technique was applied to the trigeminal, facial, and abducens roots in order to investigate the location and morphology of motoneurons of the main and accessory motor nuclei of these cranial nerves in the rat. On the basis of soma-dendritic morphology, axonal trajectory, and tegmental location, three different accessory nuclei were distinguished in the brainstem. Neurons of the accessory nuclei of V and VII form a common club-shaped nucleus extending between the main motor nuclei of V and VII. The dendritic tree of these neurons is oriented in the dorsoventral direction and

Onuf's nucleus is a small motoneuron group in S2 anterior horn, which was described by Onufrowicz in 1900. He suggested that the motoneurons in the nucleus innervated striated muscles involved in election and ejaculation. The nucleus is readily shown by the K-B stain on account of its pale staining background which is sharply demarcated from the surrounding network of fine myelinated fibers. However, neuropathological descriptions of the nucleus are very rare. Pons-Tortella et al reported the sparing of this nucleus in acute anterior poliomyelitis. In 1977. We reported that Onuf's nucleus were

A patient with advanced AIDS presented with right conjugate gaze palsy and impaired adduction on left gaze (the one-and-a-half syndrome). The responsible pontine lesion involved the ipsilateral abducens nucleus and the adjacent medial longitudinal fasiculus (MLF), as demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Tuberculosis (TB) was the etiology of the brainstem lesion. The patient had complete recovery after anti-tuberculosis treatment. The nuclear location of the tuberculoma is unusual and the reversal of this neuro-ophthalmologic syndrome is noteworthy.

The efferent and afferent pathways of the chick tangential nucleus were studied by using horseradish peroxidase (HRP: Sigma type VI) to label nerve cell bodies and fibers. Depositions of HRP into the tangential nucleus, as well as into the second cervical level of the spinal cord, show that the axons of tangential neurons on leaving the nucleus form an anteriorly coursing tract that passes through the ventrolateral vestibular nucleus without branching and then to the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). Within the MLF, the tangential axons course posteriorly, forming collaterals

We report a 39-year-old man with seven-year history of adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) who developed left abducens palsy and ataxic gait. T2-weighted MRI demonstrated high-intensities in the left side of the lower pons, including nucleus abducens and the inferior cerebellar peduncle, and in the right anteromedial portion of the thalamus corresponding to his neurological abnormalities. He responded favorably to corticosteroid treatment, and the high-intensities in the T2-weighted MRI diminished subsequently. Previously, he had developed bilateral sensorineural hearing loss which had responde

A child suffered a sixth and seventh cranial nerve palsy due to intracerebral insertion of a stylet. The stylet was introduced through the anterior fontanel, most probably in an attempt at infanticide. The migration of the stylet through the brain was monitored because the child was first examined 6 years earlier. At operation the cranial part of the stylet lay in the fourth ventricle, compressing the facial nerve as well as the nucleus of the abducens nerve. The lower part of the stylet had reached the C-5 level.

"One and a half syndrome" is an internuclear ophthalmoplegia combined with lateral gaze palsy on the same side. It is caused by ipsilateral lesion of the caudal part of pontine dorsal tegmentum - medial longitudinal fasciculus and paramedian pontine reticular formation or/and abducens nucleus. Usually it is of vascular origin and it can be a sign of lateral pontine haemorrhage. We described a patient with "one and a half syndrome" caused by spontaneous hypertensive hemorrhage in the lateral pontine legmentum which was visualised by brain CT scanning.

Alterations in histoarchitecture of the brainstem were examined immunohistochemically in 4-week-old rats with a single whole body X-irradiation at a dose of 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 Gy on embryonic day (ED) 15 using anti-heat shock protein 25 (HSP25). HSP25 immunostaining was seen in the neuronal perikarya of cranial nerve motoneurons, that is, the motor and mesencephalic nuclei of the trigeminal nerve, facial nucleus, abducens nucleus and accessory facial nucleus in the pons, and the ambiguous nucleus, dorsal nucleus of vagus nerve and hypoglossus nucleus in the medulla oblongata of intact controls.

A case of transient complete bilateral paresis of abduction is reported without esotropia. Loss of vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) responses of the abducting eye and intactness of all other slow VOR reactions were the leading symptoms. Since bilateral lesions of the pontine gaze centers in this initially comatose patient without signs of increased intracranial pressure were excluded, bilateral lesions of the abducens nerves appeared improbable. In view of normal function of the ascending tract of Deiters bilateral paramedian lesions between the vestibular and abducens nuclei appeared to be more

In the present study some afferent, commissural, and efferent connections of the vestibular nuclear complex in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans were demonstrated with the HRP tracing technique. Afferent projections to the vestibular nuclei were found to arise in the nucleus of the basal optic root, the interstitial nucleus of the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis, the medial and lateral cerebellar nuclei, the perihypoglossal nuclear complex, and the reticular formation. Distinct commissural projections appeared to arise in the dorsolateral, ventromedial, and descending vestibular nuclei.

BACKGROUND: The cervico-oculo-acoustic syndrome comprises Klippel-Feil anomaly, sensorineural deafness and Duane's retraction syndrome. Polygenic, autosomal dominant, and X-linked inheritance have been hypothesized. The disorder has rarely been reported in males.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old male, born of consanguineous parents, presented with Duane's syndrome, mixed hearing loss, C2-C3 fusion, neck stiffness, and right facial palsy. A variety of cardiac, neurological and urogenital anomalies occurred in his relatives. The electro-oculographic studies showed impaired abduction and adduction of

Gephyrin is a multifunctional protein responsible for the clustering of glycine receptors (GlyR) and gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABA(A)R). GlyR and GABA(A)R are heteropentameric chloride ion channels that facilitate fast-response, inhibitory neurotransmission in the mammalian brain and spinal cord. We investigated the immunohistochemical distribution of gephyrin and the major GABA(A)R and GlyR subunits in the human light microscopically in the rostral and caudal one-thirds of the pons, in the middle and caudal one-thirds of the medulla oblongata, and in the first cervical segmen

"Eight-and-a-half" syndrome is "one-and-a-half" syndrome (conjugated horizontal gaze palsy and internuclear ophthalmoplegia) plus ipsilateral fascicular cranial nerve seventh palsy. This rare condition, particularly when isolated, is caused by circumscribed lesions of the pontine tegmentum involving the abducens nucleus, the ipsilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus, and the adjacent facial colliculus. Its recognition is therefore of considerable diagnostic value. We report a case of a 65-year-old man who presented with eight-and-a-half syndrome in which brain magnetic resonance imaging scan

This study demonstrates the presence of retractor bulbi motoneurons within the oculomotor nucleus which activate muscle units within all 4 slips of the cat retractor bulbi muscle. These muscle units are mechanically different and physiologically separate from retractor bulbi muscle units innervated by the abducens nerve. The refractor bulbi muscle, then, is innervated by two separate pools of motoneurons whose axons are carried in two different cranial nerves. These observations of mechanical properties of retractor bulbi muscle suggest that the oculomotor retractor bulbi motor units may be ac
