Combined effects of ultrasound and ionizing radiation on lymphocyte chromosomes.

The effects of ionizing radiation and ultrasound upon the induction of chromosomal-type aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges were investigated. No statistically significant increase in the frequencies of dicentric and ring chromosomes or sister chromatid exchanges was discovered after ultrasound exposure alone at the diagnostic level. Nor could elevated frequencies of these phenomena be found following exposure to ultrasound before or after ionizing radiation, compared with those resulting from an equivalent dose of ionizing radiation alone. However, simultaneous exposure to ultrasound a

"Doctor, will that x-ray harm my unborn child?".

Exposure to ionizing radiation can be a source of anxiety for many pregnant women and their health care providers. An awareness of the radiation doses delivered by different techniques and the acceptable exposure thresholds can help both patients and practitioners. We describe exposure to radiodiagnostic procedures during pregnancy and suggest an approach to assess the potential risk.

[Review: Fetal risks in radiological examinations and estimated fetal absorption dose].

There has been growing concern about radiation exposure in the case of pregnant women who undergo radiological examinations. Lack of knowledge is responsible for the great anxiety and probably unnecessary termination of pregnancies. The main effects of radiation on the human embryo and fetus are prenatal death, growth retardation, congenital malformations and mental retardation as well as stocastic effect in lower doses. Prenatal doses from most properly performed diagnostic procedures present no measurably increased risk of prenatal death, malformation or impairment of mental development over

Radiogenic risks from hysterosalpingography.

The aim of this study was to determine ovarian dose, effective dose and associated radiogenic risks from hysterosalpingography (HSG), and to provide data for the estimation of radiogenic risks related to HSG studies performed in any laboratory. The fluoroscopy time, number of radiographs taken and entrance surface dose were measured in a series of 78 consecutive patients undergoing HSG as part of their infertility work-up. Organ-dose values per radiograph and per minute of fluoroscopy were separately determined using an anthropomorphic phantom and thermoluminescence dosimetry. The radiogenic r

Effects of prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation.

Prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation induces some effects that are seen at birth and others that cannot be detected until later in life. Data from A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki show a diminished number of births after exposure under 4 wk of gestational age. Although a wide array of congenital malformations has been found in animal experimentation after such exposure to x rays, in humans only small head size (exposure at 4-17 wk) and mental retardation (exposure primarily at 8-15 wk) have been observed. In Hiroshima, small head size occurred after doses of 0.10-0.19 Gy or more,

The AAPM/RSNA physics tutorial for residents. Typical patient radiation doses in diagnostic radiology.

Factors affecting patient dose in all x-ray imaging modalities include beam energy, filtration, collimation, patient size, and image processing. In conventional radiography, the most important determinant of acceptable patient dose is use of the highest peak kilovoltage that results in diagnostic images. Digital radiography allows a much wider range of exposures than conventional radiography for producing diagnostic images. However, operators must be aware of the subtle differences in techniques used with digital systems to avoid unnecessary increases in patient dose. Low-dose mammography requ

The effects of embryonic and fetal exposure to x-ray, microwaves, and ultrasound.

The term radiation evokes emotional responses both from lay persons and from professionals. Many spokespersons are unfamiliar with radiation biology or the quantitative nature of the risks. Frequently, microwave, ultrasound, and ionizing radiation risks are confused. Although it is impossible to prove no risk for any environmental hazard, it appears that exposure to microwave radiation below the maximal permissible levels present no measurable risk to the embryo. Ultrasound exposure from diagnostic ultrasonographic imaging equipment also is quite innocuous. It is true that continued surveillan

Radiological and functional assessment of radiation-induced pulmonary damage following breast irradiation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare late radiation-induced radiological abnormalities of the lung with spirometric observations. Radiological abnormalities were also related to theoretical calculations, in order to predict late effects based on dose-volume histograms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-one breast cancer patients who had received postoperative radiotherapy were included. During a follow-up examination 3 years or more after start of radiotherapy, computed tomography (CT) scans and pulmonary function tests were performed. Failure of root development of human permanent teeth following irradiation.

Complete absence of root formation of the upper incisors, canine and first premolar was reported in a 27-year-old female who had received radiation therapy for a retinal glioma of the right eye at age of 3 years 1 month. Ground and decalcified sections showed no remarkable changes in enamel and dentin of the crowns, but the pulp floor was closed by irregular dentin deposit despite the absence of root formation. The outer surface of the irregular dentin was covered by acellular cementum, and the periodontal membrane was undeveloped. A slight degree of fibrosis was seen in the pulp, but the coro

Monitoring human populations for effects of radiation and chemical exposures using cytogenetic techniques.

Exposure to hazardous agents in our environment can cause a variety of health effects. Some of them are expressed immediately and others take years to develop. The latter type of abnormalities are of major concern, because due to the late expression of health problems, many people would have been affected before the exposure problem can be identified and brought under control. In this article the usefulness of cytogenetic assays in monitoring human populations for the effects from exposure to radiation and chemicals is briefly reviewed. The existence of confounding variables and unusual biolog

Delayed effects of external radiation exposure: a brief history.

Within months of Roentgen's discovery of X rays, severe adverse effects were reported, but not well publicized. As a result, over the next two decades, fluoroscope operators suffered lethal skin carcinomas. Later, case reports appeared concerning leukemia in radiation workers, and infants born with severe mental retardation after their mothers had been given pelvic radiotherapy early in pregnancy. Fluoroscopy and radiotherapy for benign disorders continued to be used with abandon until authoritative reports were published on the adverse effects of ionizing radiation by the U.S. NAS-NRC and the

Genome damage in children with classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - An in vivo and in vitro study.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a heritable connective tissue disorder characterized by skin hyperextensibility, abnormal wound healing, and joint hypermobility with prevalence 1:20 000. Its incidence is probably underestimated due to unknown number of subjects having mild symptoms who may have never been diagnosed through entire life time. Classical EDS is characterized by pathogenic variants of genes encoding type V collagen. The biological effects and health risks of patients with EDS exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate

Radiotherapy and pregnancy: 2025 update.

We present the updated recommendations of the Société française de radiothérapie oncologique (SFRO, the French society for radiation oncology) on radiotherapy and pregnancy. The occurrence of cancer during pregnancy is a rare event (approximately 1 in 1000 pregnancies). The risks for the embryo or the foetus depend on the gestational age at the time of irradiation. The main risks are malformations with microcephaly and mental retardation. There is also a risk of radiation-induced cancer in the unborn child. In the case of only supradiaphragmatic irradiation, radiotherapy can be performed most

Effects of radiation on development, especially of the nervous system.

Humans and other organisms are exposed to ionizing radiations from a variety of natural and man-made sources. Radiation may cause mutations and chromosome abnormalities, cell-killing, alterations and transformations in cell growth, and carcinogenetic changes. This paper considers principally the cell-killing and nonlethal cell alterations in developing laboratory mammals and humans, especially the nervous system, that follow irradiation and often lead to malformation and disturbed function, but at certain stages to restitution of the injury. Most of what we know about the mechanisms of these r

[Analysis on x-ray-sensitivity of rabbit embryos (author's transl)].

The sensitivity of Day-4-blastocysts to total x-ray irradiation at a dosage of 130r is studied at developmental stages 10, 11, 12 and 17 days p. c., after the treated blastocysts could develop in synchronized foster mothers. The effects by 130r are compared to normal controls and other dosages of 90r and 250 r. A maximum of developmental failure is recorded particularly in 130 r --irradiated embryos. The following reasons are considered to being causally involved: 1. Reduced mitotic activity between Days 5 and 7. 2. Reduced growth of the embryonic disk at Days 6 and 7, such inhibiting differen
