Several studies involving students have been developed with the objective to analyse the influence of different factors on academic performance. Nevertheless, all these studies were focused on stress and sympathetic modulation response instead of contemplating other physiological parameters that may affect academic performance. The aim of the present study was to analyse body composition, cardiovascular, sleep habits and physical activity factors related to the academic performance of university students. Two hundred and sixty-one students with bachelor's degrees in physical activity and sport

BACKGROUND: Sleep difficulties are common among university students and may detrimentally affect academic outcomes. Despite this, remarkably little information is currently available during this critical developmental period of early adulthood, and thus, the direct effect on measurable domains of academic ability and proficiency is equivocal.
AIMS: To evaluate the associations between difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS) and subjective and objective academic performance in a large sample of university students.
SAMPLE: A total of 12,915 students who participated in large stud

Using data from 19,839 adolescents from the National Education Longitudinal Study, this study investigates whether the effects of parental divorce on adolescents' academic test performance vary by sibship size. Analyses show that the negative effect of divorce on adolescent performance attenuates as sibship size increases. On the other side of the interaction, the inverse relationship between sibship size and test performance is weaker in disrupted than in two-biological-parent families. Trends of such interactions are evident when sibship size is examined either as a continuous or a categoric

PURPOSE: Dysfunctional personality characteristics have a negative impact on the learning process, academic motivation, academic grades and course attendance. They are associated with higher levels of anxiety and negative mood before examinations, a lack of self-confidence and fear of failure, social skills deficits, and personal and social relationship problems. Dysfunctional personality characteristics inhibit interpersonal working relationships and are detrimental to team effectiveness. Previous research revealed that the majority of students selected into an Australian undergraduate medica

INTRODUCTION: Learning behavior and student engagement are important educational constructs that are associated with academic performance. Learning analytics provides opportunities to examine these relationships using large educational datasets. However, clear construct separation, appropriate statistical validation, and comparison with alternative predictive models remain necessary.
METHODS: We analyzed a publicly available educational analytics dataset containing 14,003 records. After removing 1,534 exact duplicate records, we retained 12,469 unique records. Learning behavior was represente

The dropout of university studies is a main concern in many countries, also for Health Sciences degrees. The reviews on dropout in all university degrees as well as nursing generally show multidimensional causes with factors related both to institutional and students' characteristics. Regarding the personal variables of students, researchers have focused on financial, family and personality features. Far less attention has been devoted to emotional variables. This study aims to explore whether individual variables of the emotional domain such as perceived emotional intelligence, dispositional

OBJECTIVE: To investigate weight perception and related psychological factors in Chinese adolescents.
METHODS: A questionnaire on weight perception, academic performance, stress, hostility, and depression was completed by 6863 middle and high school students. Weight and height were measured.
RESULTS: Overweight perception was related to school-related stress and depression in both girls and boys (P<0.01) and to hostility in boys (P<0.01). Perceived over-weight was related to lower GPA in girls only (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Distorted weight perception has a detrimental psychological impact on

PURPOSE: Academic performance in medical education reflects interactions among student background, academic engagement, and assessment context, particularly during the transition into medical training. This study examined associations among sociodemographic factors, academic engagement, and academic performance in first-year medical students.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among first-year medical students at the University of Buenos Aires. Academic engagement was assessed using the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9S), focusing on vigor. Sociodemographic variables included

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent during adolescence and may negatively affect health and academic functioning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in daily routines and lifestyle behaviors may have further impacted sleep patterns and physical activity levels in this population. Although associations between physical activity, sleep, and academic performance have been previously explored, evidence remains limited in specific sociocultural contexts, such as among Italian adolescents during the pandemic. The present study aimed to evaluate sleep quality using the Pittsburgh S

INTRODUCTION: There is little discussion in the literature on the pathway linking oral health problems and academic performance (AP) in children. This study investigated the hypothesis that the influence of dental caries on academic performance is mediated through toothache and impacted sleep and study activities.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study on children aged 12-14 years collected data on the exposure (decayed tooth index), outcome (school examination results), and mediator (school absence due to toothache, and oral health impact on sleep and study performances using the Child-Oral Imp

Understanding the perception that students have about their own cognitive processes is a key aspect that allows for a deeper assimilation of the different factors that affect school performance. However, there is limited evidence explaining the link between students' perception of their own cognitive functions and their academic performance. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between perception of cognitive functions, such as memory, processing speed, attention, execution of complex tasks and nervousness, and academic performance in Chilean schoolchildren from the provi

AIM: We tested for associations of bedtime, sleep duration, instant messaging, and chronic headaches with hypersomnolence and academic performance in a sample of high school students in New Jersey, USA.
METHODS: Students were surveyed anonymously and asked to report their sleep and messaging habits, headache status, and overall grades.
RESULTS: We found that greater hypersomnolence was associated with later bedtimes, shorter sleep durations, and the presence of chronic headaches, but not with messaging after lights out. Also, we found that academic performance was lower in students who messa

The literature has documented the widespread nature of sexual assault victimization among college women. While the aftermath of violence against university women has also received focus, that is, documenting trauma-related sequelae; risk factors; reporting patterns; and legal interventions, the impact on academic performance has not received adequate attention in the literature. The primary purpose of this study was to explore the association of rape and sexual assault with academic performance among college women. Its specific aims included the following: to compare high school and college se

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between children's overweight status and other cardiovascular risk fitness factors and academic performance among fifth-grade students.
RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Using a sample of 968 fifth-grade students (50.7% boys; mean age = 10.6 years), children's cardiovascular risks (BMI, blood pressure, acanthosis nigricans) and fitness measures were compared with their mean group performance scores across four subscales (mathematics, reading/language arts, science, and social studies) of a statewide standardized academic performance test.

The authors evaluated 51 consecutive children with NF1 (aged eight to 16 years) to determine the frequency of intelectual impairment and learning disability due to NF1 alone, the profile of learning disabilities and the effect of clinical variables. 40 children completed the full assessment protocol. There was no support for a profile of predominantly visuoperceptual deficits in the NF1 population. There was no discrepancy between verbal and performance IQ, and the deficits in function were wide ranging. Clinical variables such as age, sex, socio-economic status, disease severity, macrocephaly

Implementing educational activities, such as a wet lab with cadaveric brain dissection, is known to have a direct impact on medical students' motivation. These activities demonstrate the clinical relevance of concepts taught in the classroom setting. The correlation between motivation and academic performance is not clear. First year medical students participated in wet lab activities. The wet lab included cadaveric dissection of the surface and internal anatomy of the brain, as well as discussions facilitated by the neuroscience faculty and clinicians. Discussions were centered around the cli

PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to verify whether child and adolescent oral health affected academic performance.
METHODS: A literature search conducted in March 2017 on PubMed, Lilacs, Web of Science, and Scopus databases identified 2,009 papers, six of which were included in the final review. Quality appraisal and risk of bias were evaluated using the quality assessment tool for observational cohort and cross-sectional studies.
RESULTS: Two papers were classified as being of good quality, one as fair, and three as poor. In four publications, oral health conditions were m
