Exploring the development of academic self-concept: a qualitative study of student success among Sama Dilaut University graduates.

PURPOSE: Despite the growing recognition of academic self-concept as a critical driver of student success, limited research has examined how high-achieving Indigenous students, particularly those from Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) communities in the Philippines, develop and sustain a positive academic self-concept in the face of systemic discrimination and socioeconomic disadvantage. Thus, this study explored the development of academic self-concept among Sama Dilaut university graduates and how they navigated the relationship between their cultural identity and their

Navigating through turbulence in the nursing talent pipeline: A constructivist grounded theory of academic success in polytechnic nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Academic success for nursing students has traditionally focused on metrics like grade point averages and exam performance but fails to reflect key abilities such as clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and the effective transfer of knowledge to practice. Additionally, there is a paucity of literature investigating academic success in undergraduate nursing education within polytechnic institutions, despite their growing role in nursing education. AIM: The objective of this study was to explore the processes and strategies undergraduate nursing students in Canadian polytechn

Bracketed Localization in Breast-Conserving Surgery: Indications and Success Rates From a Single, High Volume, Academic Breast Cancer Center.

BACKGROUND: Bracketed localization is a technique used to help localize lesions for breast-conserving surgery (BCS). To date, there are no guidelines for when bracketed localization should be used in clinical practice. Based on our experience, we aim to provide criteria that should prompt surgeons to consider bracketing. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective chart review was performed on patients who underwent bracketed localization for BCS between 2015 and 2021. Lesion characteristics were recorded including lesion span, number of lesions, histology type on core needle biopsy and surgi

Self-regulated learning and academic success under digital inequality among Peruvian university students: the moderating role of institutional support.

Academic success in higher education is influenced by both psychological competencies and contextual conditions, particularly in environments characterized by unequal access to digital resources. Although previous studies have examined self-regulated learning and digital inequality separately, limited evidence has integrated these constructs within a single analytical framework in Latin American higher education. This study examined the relationships among digital inequality, self-regulated learning, institutional support, and academic success in a sample of 742 undergraduate students from a p

Sources of stress and coping strategies employed by undergraduate students over a semester: motivations and implications for academic success.

University students commonly experience high levels of stress, which negatively impact on academic performance, engagement, and well-being. Coping strategies can be employed to manage stress, but there have not been extensive examinations of student motivations for selecting coping strategies and how selection of strategies changes during a semester. This study explored sources of stress and coping strategies used by first-year undergraduate students across a semester. It examined reasons for strategy selection and the relationships between coping strategies, academic engagement, and performan

How professional and academic pre-qualifications relate to success in medical education: Results of a multicentre study in Germany.

OBJECTIVE: Every year, many applicants want to study medicine. Appropriate selection procedures are needed to identify suitable candidates for the demanding curriculum. Although research on medical school admissions has shown good predictive validity for cognitive selection methods (undergraduate GPA, aptitude tests), the literature on applicants with professional and/or academic experience prior to entering medical school remains slim. In our study, we therefore aimed to examine the association between academic success in medical school and having previously completed vocational training in t

Identifying Barriers to Basic Needs, Academic Success, and the Vaccination Pattern among College Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

College students face significant challenges during large-scale disease outbreaks that potentially compromise their basic needs, vaccine confidence, and academic success. Using a cross-sectional design and convenience sampling, we examined the impact of COVID-19 among college students (N = 828). The survey was administered using the Qualtrics survey platform to collect data on multiple demographic and health behaviors of students in the summer semester (2021). Our study demonstrated that the most common financial shock experienced by the study participants was job loss, with less remarkable ch

Sex-Specific Patterns of Cortisol Fluctuation, Stress, and Academic Success in Quarantined Foreign Medical Students During the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Cortisol is built into the circadian clock mechanism, but it is also the body's natural response to stress. Insight into sex-specific cortisol fluctuations may elucidate individual differences in physiological and pathological patterns. This cross-sectional study examined sex-specific adaptation to stress induced by COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown in foreign medical students at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Ukraine (TNMU). Salivary cortisol was analyzed using cluster-based mathematical modeling to identify natural groupings in the data. Perceived stress was measured usin

Development of emodepside as a possible adulticidal treatment for human onchocerciasis-The fruit of a successful industrial-academic collaboration.

Current mass drug administration (MDA) programs for the treatment of human river blindness (onchocerciasis) caused by the filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus rely on ivermectin, an anthelmintic originally developed for animal health. These treatments are primarily directed against migrating microfilariae and also suppress fecundity for several months, but fail to eliminate adult O. volvulus. Therefore, elimination programs need time frames of decades, well exceeding the life span of adult worms. The situation is worsened by decreased ivermectin efficacy after long-term therapy. To improve treatm

Successful strategy to decrease indwelling catheter utilization rates in an academic medical intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Duration of indwelling urinary catheterization is an important risk factor for urinary tract infections. We devised a strategy to decrease the utilization of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs). We also highlight the challenges of managing critically ill patients without IUCs and demonstrate some of the initiatives that we undertook to overcome these challenges. METHODS: A retrospective observational outcomes review was performed in an adult medical intensive care unit (ICU) between January 2012 and December 2016. This period included a baseline and series of intervals, whereby di

Lead in Newark drinking water: a successful community-driven data collection and academic-community partnership.

From 2017 to 2019, Newark, NJ exceeded the federal action level for lead in drinking water of 15 μg/L. We established an academic-community partnership to address residents' concerns. We distributed 500 tap water sampling kits to residents with instructions on how to collect three sequential samples: first draw, and after 1 and 5 min of flushing the tap. Thirty-three percent (N = 165) of kits were returned and 411 samples analyzed. Lead was detected in all water samples (range: 0.01-685 μg/L). Thirty-seven percent of homes had at least one sample >1 μg/L; 17% had at least one sample >5 μg/L. T
