Antiinflammatory, analgesic and antiperoxidative efficacy of Barleria lupulina Lindl. extract.

A study was undertaken to investigate the antiinflammatory efficacy of methanol extract of aerial parts of Barleria lupulina Lindl. [MEBL] (Family: Acanthaceae) in acute and sub-acute inflammation models of albino rats. The MEBL in all the tested dose levels exhibited significant inhibition of carrageenin and serotonin induced paw oedema volumes when compared with the untreated (control) group. The MEBL also exerted a significant reduction in granuloma weight in the cotton pellet induced granuloma model. These potentials were comparable to that of the standard drug (indomethacin). The plant ex

Response to Short-Term Cold Storage for Eggs of Agasicles hygrophila (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a Biological Control Agent of Alligator Weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Caryophyllales: Amaranthaceae).

The alligator weed flea beetle, Agasicles hygrophila Selman & Vogt (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) has been used very successfully for the biological control of the widely-distributed invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb (Caryophyllales: Amaranthaceae). In order to extend the 'shelf life' of natural enemies released in biological control programs, cold storage has proven to be a valuable commercial procedure. To determine a suitable low temperature for storage of A. hygrophila, we conducted short-term cold storage treatments of eggs (4°C for 0.5, 1, 2, 5 d, and 7.5, 10, 15°C fo

Antifungal activity of extracts from Justicia species against Fusarium graminearum.

Fusarium graminearum causes destructive ear rot diseases in maize and wheat. New antifungals are essential to combat this pathogen, and aerial parts of Justicia species (Acanthaceae) are a potential source. We investigated the antifungal activity of extracts from stems and leaves of five Justicia species native to Northwest Argentina. The aerial parts were subjected to sequential extractions with dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The resulting extracts were tested by the disc diffusion method against F. graminearum strains. Only the leaf and stem extracts from J. xylosteoides displ

Wound healing and photoprotection properties of Acanthus ebracteatus Vahl. extracts standardized in verbascoside.

Acanthus spp. have been documented in traditional Thai herbal medicine and are applicable for the treatment of inflamed skin with wound healing property. Nonetheless, the scientific evidence necessary to prove the herb's doctrine has not yet been revealed. Verbascoside-rich extracts of the herbal medicine A. ebracteatus Vahl., were therefore prepared. The extracts and verbascoside were examined for their wound healing abilities using a scratch assay with fibroblasts. The anti-inflammatory effect suppressing MMP-9 was assessed in cocultures of keratinocyte (HaCaT cells) and fibroblasts. The ext

Classification of Black Mahlab seeds (Monechma ciliatum) using GC-MS and FT-NIR and simultaneous prediction of their major volatile compounds using chemometrics.

The identification of geographical origin is an important factor in assessing the quality of aromatic and medicinal seeds such as Black Mahlab (Monechma ciliatum). However, at present, there are no studies concerning Black Mahlab Seeds (BMSs). To identify the geographical origin of BMSs, we have used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR) combined with chemometrics. Chemometrics analysis showed that FT-NIR and GC-MS can be used to discriminate the geographical origin of BMSs. FT-NIR coupled with the partial least squares regression (PL

Synergistic Effect of DIBOA and Verbascoside from Acanthus mollis Leaf on Tyrosinase Inhibition.

Overexpression of melanin contributes to darkening of plant and fruit tissues and skin hyperpigmentation, leading to melasma or age spots. Although melanin biosynthesis is complex and involves several steps, a single enzyme known as tyrosinase is key to regulating this process. The melanogenesis pathway is initiated by oxidation of the starting material l-tyrosine (or l-DOPA) to dopaquinone by tyrosinase; the resulting quinone then serves as a substrate for subsequent steps that eventually lead to production of melanin. Medicinal plants are considered a good source of tyrosinase inhibitors. Th

Aqueous Thunbergia laurifolia leaf extract alleviates paraquat-induced lung injury in rats by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Paraquat (PQ) has been reported to have a high mortality rate. The major target organ of PQ poisoning is the lungs. The pathogenesis of PQ-induced lung injury involves oxidative stress and inflammation. Unfortunately, there is still no effective antidote for PQ poisoning. We hypothesized that aqueous Thunbergia laurifolia (TL) leaf extract is a possible antidote for PQ-induced lung injury. METHODS: The total phenolic content and caffeic acid content of an aqueous extract of TL leaves were analyzed. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 4 per group): the cont
