The Neotropical Nannopterum brasilianus is a piscivorous bird feeding on aquatic organisms, can ingest various infectious forms of helminths, such as those from the phylum Acanthocephala. In their adult stage, these parasites attach to the intestinal mucosa of their definitive hosts, causing varying degrees of tissue damage. Between 2020 and 2023, 35 individuals of N. brasilianus were analyzed, and 20 of them (57.1%) presented acanthocephalan infection. Morphological and histopathological analyses identified the species as Southwellina hispida, we described the tissue alterations associated wi

PURPOSE: Molecular phylogenetics has been improving the acanthocephalan systematics, yet numerous taxa remain unexplored. The palaeacanthocephalan Metarhadinorhynchus Yamaguti, 1959 and its type species M. lateolabracis Yamaguti, 1959 are such to-be-explored taxa. We aim to refine (i) the systematic placement, (ii) the morphological circumscription, and (iii) the taxonomic components of the genus. We also aim to examine the taxonomic status of the species that have been assigned to the genus.
METHODS: Morphological observations on newly collected specimens as well as the type material of Meta

Previous marine biology studies found that the concentration of heavy metals in some parasites of fish such as acanthocephalans can be a proper bioindicator. Therefore, we attempted to measure five heavy metal concentrations in the tissues of the fish Gasterosteus aculeatus (G. aculeatus) and its acanthocephalan parasites, Corynosoma caspicum (C. caspicum) from the Southern Caspian Sea, northern Iran. G. aculeatus (three-spined stickleback) was collected from the south of the Caspian Sea, Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. After tissue preparation, the heavy metal concentrations in fishes and

Allozyme electrophoresis was used to detect biological species of the E. gadi complex from gadids from the northern North Sea. A fixed difference at one of nine enzyme loci surveyed confirmed the existence of two reproductively isolated, sympatric species. Mixed infections of two E. gadi spp. (termed A and B) were observed in Gadus morhua and Pollachius virens. E. gadi sp. B was also found in Melanogrammus aeglefinus and Merlangius merlangus. The presence of gravid females of E. gadi spp. A and B in the same host species, P. virens, and sometimes in the same host individual, indicates that nei

In this paper we report an investigation of the utility of coprological analysis as an alternative technique to study parasite specificity whenever host sampling is problematic; acanthocephalans from marine mammals were used as a model. A total of 252 scats from the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, and rectal faeces from 43 franciscanas, Pontoporia blainvillei, from Buenos Aires Province, were examined for acanthocephalans. Specimens of two species, i.e. Corynosoma australe and C. cetaceum, were collected from both host species. In sea lions, 78 out of 145 (37.9%) females of C. aust

Members of the genus Oncicola Travassos, 1916 are generalist parasites able to infect a broad spectrum of carnivorous hosts, such as marsupials, procyonids, felids, and canids, and are distributed globally. Adult specimens were collected from the intestines of three white-nosed coatis (N. narica), whereas cystacanths (larval form) were found in the body cavities of two amphibian species (paratenic hosts) in localities from northern and southeastern Mexico. Morphologically, both stages were identified as O. luehei (Travassos, 1917) on the basis of the following features: trunk cylindrical, narr

An updated checklist of adult thorny-headed worms (Acanthocephala) that parasitize wild North American amphibians and reptiles is presented: A total of 21 species grouped in 4 genera, 4 families, 2 orders, and 2 classes are registered; these infect a total of 19 species of reptiles and 17 species of amphibians in the region. An illustrated identification key for the families and genera listed is proposed.

Three species of amphibian-parasitic acanthocephalans belonging to the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus Petrochenko, 1958 have been recorded in Japan. However, only a limited number of localities have been surveyed, and the distribution of these congeners across other regions of Japan remains unclear. In this study, acanthocephalans of the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus were recovered from both definitive (Rana ornativentris Werner - type host, and Zhangixalus arboreus [Okada et Kawano]) and accidental hosts (Scyliorhinus torazame [Tanaka]) from Sado Island, Japan. Morphological analyses indicate that

Water balance and its relation to carbohydrate metabolism was examined in Hymenolepis diminuta in parallel with the putative osmoconformer Moniliformis moniliformis. Worms were removed from rat intestines, weighed, and incubated (37 C) 1 hr in rat serum and various salines, some with mannitol to vary osmotic concentration from 150 to 400 mOsm/L. Worms were removed at 15-min intervals, weighed, and returned to the test solution. Rat serum and a Ringer's saline (pH 7.4 and 300 mOsm/L) with or without 5 mM glucose were isotonic to M. moniliformis, which behaved like an osmometer, shrinking, or sw

A new species of Acanthocephala is described based on specimens found parasitising the intestine of the gafftopsail pompano Trachinotus rhodopus Gill in the State of Oaxaca, off the Pacific coast of Mexico. Rhadinorhynchus villalobosi sp. n. differs from the other 25 species of the genus known from the Pacific Ocean by a combination of morphological traits, such as the fewer number of rows of hooks along the proboscis, the distribution of spines of the trunk forming two fields, the position of genital pore, subterminal in both sexes, a shorter neck and cement glands, among others. The phylogen

Corynosoma strumosum (Acanthocephala), a widespread parasite of pinnipeds, is reported in marine foraging North American mink (Neogale vison) and river otter (Lontra canadensis) on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This is the first confirmed case of infection by C. strumosum in river otters on the west coast of North America and may be the first confirmed case of infection in wild North American mink; C. strumosum has previously been reported in river otters in Europe (Lutra lutra) and in farmed mink fed with marine fish. We also detected a case of acanthocephalan associated peritonitis in

Five helminths, including a new echinorhynchid acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus longiacanthus n. sp., are described based on specimens from the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard caught in a small river, western Japan. The new acanthocephalan is distinguished from the other congeners in terms of hook arrangement (8-9 longitudinal rows with 5-6 hooks per row) on proboscis, maximum length of hook blade (81-95 μm in male, 150-190 μm in female), lemnisci being longer than proboscis receptacle, and small-sized eggs (80-83 μm). A new species of Moniliformis, M. tupaia n. sp. is described using integrated morphological methods (light and scanning electron microscopy) and molecular techniques (sequencing and analysing the nuclear 18S, ITS, 28S regions and mitochondrial cox1 and cox2 genes), based on specimens collected from the intestine of the northern tree shrew Tupaia belangeri chinensis Anderson (Scandentia: Tupaiidae) in China. Phylogenetic analyses show that M. tupaia n. sp. is a sister to M. moniliformis in the genus Moniliformis, and also challenge the systematic status of Nephridiacanthus major. Moniliformis t

An isolated population of 700 specimens initially described as Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1802) Lühe, 1904 and currently reassigned to Corynosoma neostrumosum n. sp. was collected from one young male Caspian seal, Pusa caspica (Gmelin) in the southern land-locked Caspian Sea in April 2009. Collected worms were morphologically unique compared with those reported by other observers in open waters, especially in shape and distribution of proboscis hooks and trunk spines, dorso-ventral differences in proboscis hooks and their organization, the baldness of anterior proboscis, consistently smal
