The effect of indoxacarb and five other insecticides on Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae), Amblyseius fallacis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and nymphs of Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae).

A laboratory study assessed the contact toxicity of indoxacarb, abamectin, endosulfan, insecticidal soap, S-kinoprene and dimethoate to Amblyseius fallacis (Garman), Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and nymphs of Orius insidiosus (Say). Amblyseius fallacis is a predacious phytoseiid mite and an integral part of integrated pest management (IPM) programmes in North American apple orchards. The other two beneficials are widely used in greenhouses to manage various arthropod pests infesting vegetable and ornamental crops. Indoxacarb is a slow-acting insecticide, so toxicity data were recorde

Description of a new Pavlovskyella species (Acari: Argasidae) from Chile.

Soft ticks (Argasidae) of the Pavlovskyella Pospelova-Shtrom subgenus are important vectors of relapsing fever spirochetes, which are agents of disease globally. South American representatives of the Pavlovskyella subgenus include 3 species: Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) brasiliensis Aragão, Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) furcosus Neumann, and Ornithodoros (Pavlovskyella) rostratus Aragão. Here, we describe a fourth species based on morphological and mitogenomic evidence of ticks collected in burrows of unknown hosts in central Chile. The larva of the new species separates from other South Americ

Food Suitability and Population Dynamics of Lorryia formosa (Acari: Tydeidae).

Lorryia formosa Cooreman (Acari: Tydeidae) is a species of mite commonly associated with citrus in many countries including the United States. A survey report in 1957 suggested phytophagous nature, while other studies claimed that L. formosa populations are associated with honeydew producing insects and sooty mold and it acts as a sanitizing agent. We investigated the effect of various diets on the survival and progeny production of L. formosa on excised leaves and the survival and potential to cause feeding damage to leaves of potted plants in a greenhouse study. A 2-yr field survey of a mand

Rickettsia Species Isolated from Dermacentor occidentalis (Acari: Ixodidae) from California.

The Pacific Coast tick (Dermacentor occidentalis Marx, 1892) is one of the most widely distributed and frequently encountered tick species in California. This tick is the primary vector of an unclassified spotted fever group rickettsial pathogen, designated currently as Rickettsia 364D, the etiologic agent of a recently recognized tick-borne rickettsiosis known as Pacific Coast tick fever. Despite intensified interest in this pathogen, important questions remain regarding its taxonomic status and possible variations in genotype among different strains that could influence its pathogenicity. Vector competence of Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae) for Rickettsia rickettsii.

Rickettsia rickettsii - the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) - is widely spread across the Americas. In the US, Dermacentor spp. ticks are identified as primary vectors of R. rickettsii and Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. has been implicated in transmission of this pathogen in several locations in the Southwest. Conversely, ticks of the genus Amblyomma are recognized vectors of RMSF in Central and South America, but not in the US. A. americanum is one of the most aggressive human-biting ticks in the US, whose geographical range overlaps with that of reported RMSF cases. Des

Widespread Rickettsia spp. Infections in Ticks (Acari: Ixodoidea) in Taiwan.

Ticks are second to mosquitoes as the most important disease vectors, and recent decades have witnessed the emergence of many novel tick-borne rickettsial diseases, but systematic surveys of ticks and tick-borne rickettsioses are generally lacking in Asia. We collected and identified ticks from small mammal hosts between 2006 and 2010 in different parts of Taiwan. Rickettsia spp. infections in ticks were identified by targeting ompB and gltA genes with nested polymerase chain reaction. In total, 2,732 ticks were collected from 1,356 small mammals. Transovarial transmission of Orientia tsutsugamushi in Leptotrombidium palpale (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Transovarial transmission of Orientia tsutsugamushi in colonies of Leptotrombidium palpale was studied in the parent and F1 and F2 generations. Both transovarial transmission and filial infection rates were 100% in the parent and F1 generations of Leptotrombidium palpale. The filial infection rate in the F1 generation was 100%, but it declined to 94.3% in the F2 progeny. The sex ratio of the F1 generation from infected L. palpale was 1∶0.8 (male:female) and the proportion of males was relatively high. This study is the first to report on the transovarial transmission of O. tsutsugamushi in L.

Amblyomma parvitarsum (Acari: Ixodidae): localities, hosts and host-parasite ecology.

Only a few aspects of the biology of Amblyomma parvitarsum Neumann are known. Adults of this hard tick species are parasites of South American camelids in the Andean plateau of Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Chile and also in the Argentine Patagonia, but they have been also rarely found on other artyodactils and two species of birds. The larva has been collected from reptiles in northern Chile, whereas the hosts for the nymph remain unknown. On nine localities included within Altitude Tropical and Perarid Mediterranean ecoregions in northern Chile, we analyzed 237 reptiles, 285 birds, 624 rodent

Life cycle of Ornithodoros mimon (Acari: Argasidae) under laboratory conditions.

Ornithodoros mimon Kohls et al. is an argasid tick, originally described from larvae collected on bats from Bolivia and Uruguay. In Brazil the species is aggressive to humans and animals. Nymphs and adults of O. mimon were collected from the roof of a residence in Araraquara, São Paulo, Brazil, whose residents were bitten by ticks. Once in the laboratory, they were fed on rabbits and maintained in biological oxygen demand incubator at 27 ± 1 °C and 90 ± 10 % relative humidity. The females, after mating, laid eggs that resulted in larvae that were identified by the original description and also

Apparent tick paralysis by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in dogs.

Certain tick species including Ixodes holocyclus can inoculate neurotoxins that induce a rapid, ascending flaccid paralysis in animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the most widespread tick of dogs, is recognized as a vector of several pathogens causing diseases in dogs and humans. A single report suggests its role as cause of paralysis in dogs. This study presents the clinical history of 14 young dogs heavily infested by R. sanguineus (intensity of infestation, 63-328) in an endemic area of southern Italy. During May to June of 2011, dogs were presented at the clinical examination with neurologi

Food scarcity reduces female longevity of Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae).

A commercial strain of Neoseiulus californicus (Spical) has a conspicuously long postoviposition period in comparison with other strains of N. californicus or other phytoseiid mites. In many insects and mites, life span is shorter for multiple-mated females than for single-mated females, and is shorter under poor prey conditions than under ample prey conditions. We previously showed that the postoviposition period of multiple-mated females was 40% shorter than that of single-mated females, but that it was never shorter than 30 days. Here we focused on the effect of prey abundance on the postov

Genetic epidemiology of Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) in northern Australia.

Utilising three hypervariable microsatellite markers we have previously shown that scabies mites on people are genetically distinct from those on dogs in sympatric populations in northern Australia. This had important ramifications on the formulation of public health control policies. In contrast phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial markers on scabies mites infecting multiple animal hosts elsewhere in the world could not differentiate any genetic variation between mite haplotype and host species. Here we further analyse the intra-specific relationship of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis wit

Lipid ingestion from sheep epidermis by Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Skin biopsies from three groups of sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis were cryofixed in liquid nitrogen to preserve outer epidermis with its lipid. From one group of five sheep (Group A), biopsies were taken from relatively healthy skin near the edge of scab lesions where mites had congregated. Frozen vertical sections from these biopsies were stained with Oil Red O and haematoxylin before mounting. Red lipid globules were plentiful within the body cavity of sectioned mites, but ingested lipid could not be distinguished from endogenous mite body stores by this technique. In a second group of f

Continuous cell lines from embryonic tissues of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

Six new cell lines were established in continuous culture from embryonic tissues of ixodid ticks. Four were from Dermacentor variabilis and two from D. parumapertus. The cells are mostly fibroblastic and diploid. Mosquito-borne viruses (Chikungunya, O'nyong, yellow fever, and St. Louis encephalitis) as well as tick-borne ones (Langat, Powassan, Colorado tick fever, Kemerovo, and Sawgrass) replicated in certain of these cell lines, but a nonvector-borne flavivirus, Modoc, did not. Hormetic effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on Rhizoglyphus robini (Acari: Acaridae).

The stimulation of biological processes by sublethal doses of insecticides or other stressors is known as hormesis. Here, we have evaluated whether exposure to field-relevant or low concentrations of neonicotinoids induce changes in the reproductive capacity of the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini (Acari: Acaridae). Among the tested neonicotinoids imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and dinotefuran, the highest hormetic effect on the reproduction of R. robini occurred 24 h after the 48 h exposure period to imidacloprid at concentrations of 70 and 140 mg a.i./L. Despite the stimulating effects of imidaclo

Life cycle of Amblyomma integrum (Acari: Ixodidae) under laboratory conditions.

Amblyomma integrum is a hard tick infesting mainly buffalo and cattle and has been identified as an agent of human otoacariasis in Sri Lanka. Data on the life cycle pattern of A. integrum were collected by experimental infestation on New Zealand white rabbits under laboratory conditions. Wild-caught females laid 55-7389 eggs for 2-35 days after spending a latent period of 10-25 days. Egg incubation period was 31-105 days and the newly emerged larvae started feeding after 4-11 days. Allergological characterisation of the storage mite Acarus gracilis (Acari: Acaridae).

BACKGROUND: Storage mites of the genus Acarus can be responsible for allergic sensitisation in domestic environments. Acarus gracilis is a frequent species in some geographical regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Since the allergenicity of this mite has not been described before, the objectives of this study were to characterise it immunologically, and to compare it with the closely related and more extensively studied species Acarus siro. METHODS: Extracts from A. gracilis and A. siro cultures were characterised by Lowry, 1D and 2D-SDS and IEF. Zymogram, and determination of different enzymati
