BackgroundBorderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition. Wise Moments is a four-session Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-themed intervention for the preliminary treatment of BPD. It focuses on the ACT concept of the 'self-as-context' (the 'observing self'), encouraging the person diagnosed with BPD to notice and observe their internal mental states without judgement. This study assessed the acceptability and efficacy of an ultra-brief, individual intervention based on ACT principles, designed for clients experiencing symptoms of BPD.MethodSelf-administered p

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been found efficacious in randomized clinical trials (RCTs), but the two widely known RCTs were conducted within the United States with predominantly White samples. Research that evaluates treatments like ACT for OCD outside the typical Western cultures is needed. The current scoping review summarizes the key characteristics and findings from 18 RCTs that evaluated ACT for OCD in Iran. These RCTs are largely unknown in the broader scientific literature despite representing the vast majority of ACT for OCD trial

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis have relatively high levels of stress and psychological dysfunction. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a psychological intervention that comprises acceptance and mindfulness procedures, along with commitment and behavior change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility and reduce stress. We performed a randomized controlled trial to investigate the effect of ACT on stress in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
METHODS: A total of 122 patients with quiescent or stable, mildly active IBD were ra

BACKGROUND: While agonist replacement therapies are effective for managing opioid dependence, community treatment programs are increasingly choosing detoxification. Unfortunately, success rates for opioid detoxification are very low, in part, due to physical and psychological symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal. Few behavior therapies specifically address the distressing experiences specific to opioid withdrawal. A novel behavioral treatment, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), works from the premise that the avoidance of unpleasant private experiences (thoughts, feelings, bodily s

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between session-by-session putative mediators and treatment outcomes in traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for mixed anxiety disorders.
METHOD: Session-by-session changes in anxiety sensitivity and cognitive defusion were assessed in 67 adult outpatients randomized to CBT (n = 35) or ACT (n = 32) for a DSM-IV anxiety disorder.
RESULTS: Multilevel mediation analyses revealed significant changes in the proposed mediators during both treatments (p < .001, d = .90-1.93), with ACT showing borderline grea

Individuals reporting chronic, nonmalignant pain for at least 6 months (N=114) were randomly assigned to 8 weekly group sessions of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) after a 4-6 week pretreatment period and were assessed after treatment and at 6-month follow-up. The protocols were designed for use in a primary care rather than specialty pain clinic setting. All participants remained stable on other pain and mood treatments over the course of the intervention. ACT participants improved on pain interference, depression, and pain-related anxiety; there

OBJECTIVE: To assess the outcome of men presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with large postvoid residual urine volumes (PVR).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included men presenting with LUTS and a PVR of > 250 mL who, because of significant comorbidity, a low symptom score or patient request, were managed conservatively and prospectively, and were followed with symptom assessment, serum creatinine levels, flow rates and renal ultrasonography. Patients were actively managed if there was a history of previous outflow tract surgery, prostate cancer, urethral stricture

Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) has attracted a lot of interest during the last 10-15 years with a strong increase of the number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The present review and meta-analysis includes 60 RCTs (4234 participants) on psychiatric disorders, somatic disorders, and stress at work. The mean effect size across all comparisons was small (0.42). Compared to the Öst (2008) meta-analysis there was no significant improvement in methodological quality and deterioration in effect size (from 0.68). When ACT was compared to various forms of cognitive or behavioral treatm

OBJECTIVE: The proposed scoping review aims to explore the literature on the use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) by occupational therapy (OT) practitioners, including how OT practitioners use ACT in the evaluation or intervention process, what types of client concerns they are addressing through ACT, in what settings they are using ACT, and what outcomes are being reported.
INTRODUCTION: ACT is a third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy that is effective across a wide range of diagnoses commonly seen by OT practitioners. Given the increased use of ACT by OT practitioners, a comprehe

INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in the management of rheumatic diseases, many patients experience persistent pain and fatigue. Psychological interventions are useful adjunctive treatments, but improvements tend to be small, and progress in this area is needed. The aim of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for the treatment of chronic pain and fatigue in patients with rheumatic disease.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of ACT for the treatment of ch

BACKGROUND: Emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are one of the main causes of disability worldwide. Recent reviews suggest that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is effective in treating emotional disorders. However, they appraise mainly individual approaches. This review aimed to analyze published studies regarding the usefulness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, applied on a group basis, in the treatment of anxiety and depression.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the Web of Science, from 2008 to 2019. Fifteen articles fulfilled the incl

The purpose of this study was to examine acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as a standalone treatment for trichotillomania in a randomized controlled trial of adults and adolescents. Participants consisted of a community sample of treatment seeking adults and adolescents with trichotillomania. Of the eligible 39 participants randomized into treatment and waitlist groups, 25 completed treatment and were included in the final analysis. Treatment consisted of a 10-session ACT protocol. Multiple mixed models repeated measures analyses were utilized to evaluate changes in trichotillomania symp

Background: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are empirically supported treatments for anxiety and panic disorder (PD), though they differ in their putative vulnerability and maintenance processes. The present study examined the incremental validity of several of these models' proposed core processes, including anxiety sensitivity (AS), dispositional avoidance, experiential avoidance (EA), cognitive fusion (CF), and mindfulness, as well as the interaction of the processes within each model, in the prediction of anxiety and panic symptomology. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for insomnia compared with waitlist/standard control conditions and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted. We searched on PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies comparing ACT or ACT-based interventions with non-ACT conditions in patients with insomnia. Continuous outcomes were pooled using a restricted maximum likelihood random-effects model on R.
RESULTS: ACT showed moderate-to-large improvement in

Internet-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (iACT) offers a promising, scalable intervention format for individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), yet its feasibility and preliminary efficacy remain underexplored. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and initial efficacy of a 7-day self-guided iACT program delivered via a secure, mobile-responsive platform. Seventy individuals were screened, of whom 60 clinically stable adults with BD (aged 18-60) met eligibility criteria and were randomized to either the iACT group (n = 30) or an active control gr
