Exploring the lived experience of food insecurity through the camera lens: A photo elicitation study.

Healthy eating remains unattainable for many due to limited access to affordable, nutritious foods. In the United Kingdom, over 11% of the population is estimated to be food insecure. This study explored the lived experiences of adults living with food insecurity and examined how these experiences shape their dietary health behaviours. Using a photo-elicitation approach, food insecure adults (N = 9) photographed their food environments. The photos were used to guide semi-structured interviews which were transcribed and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Participants viewed healthy foo

The Occupational Therapy Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity among Older Adults with Chronic Disease.

The older adult population is one of the fastest growing age groups in the United States. Various components influence productive aging, and current research has identified nutrition and healthy eating as key factors that impact older adults' overall health status. While consumption of nutritious meals can help minimize the risk of health decline, the growing rate of food insecurity inhibits older adults' abilities to access healthy food regularly. Additionally, the high prevalence of chronic disease and disability in older adults can also limit independent participation in food-related activi

Associations between Subjective and Objective Measures of the Community Food Environment and Executive Function in Early Childhood.

The present study utilized a cross-sectional design to assess whether two indicators of the community food environment, parent perceptions of the community food environment (i.e., as assessed by parent reports of access to, availability, and affordability of foods) and limited food access (via census data), were related to executive function in preschool children. Children were recruited during the 2014-2015 academic year from Head Start and community-based preschools (N = 102) and children's executive function ability was tested using the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task. Multiple linear regres

A Practical Perspective on Confronting the Obesity Epidemic: Public-Health Strategies.

Obesity is currently recognized as a global epidemic and contributes to numerous health complications. It is strongly associated with poor dietary habits, including the widespread availability and consumption of high-calorie foods. We conducted a narrative review of publications from major biomedical databases addressing obesity treatment and public-health interventions. One of the strategies for managing obesity is lifestyle modification-balanced diet and regular physical activity-supported by pharmacological and psychological treatment, and, in selected patients, metabolic and bariatric surg

Effects of mobility and location on food access.

Access to healthy food has become an important area of investigation for researchers interested in health disparities and inequalities. The debate about the existence and characteristics of 'food deserts' has increased the interest in food availability and equity in health research. This debate is crucial to an understanding of the factors leading to food security. Research reported here used in-depth interviews with respondents without private transport living within and outside food deserts in Adelaide, South Australia. The respondents came from a variety of households, including single and

Addressing nutritional issues and eating behaviours among university students: a narrative review.

University life is a critical period for establishing healthy eating habits and attitudes. However, university students are at risk of developing poor eating habits due to various factors, including economic conditions, academic stress and lack of information about nutritional concepts. Poor diet quality leads to malnutrition or overnutrition, increasing the risk of preventable diseases. Food environments on university campuses also play a significant role in shaping the dietary habits of students, with the availability of and accessibility to healthy food options being important factors influ

Taxation and Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: Position of Dietitians of Canada.

Dietitians of Canada recommends that an excise tax of at least 10-20% be applied to sugar-sweetened beverages sold in Canada given the negative impact of these products on the health of the population and the viability of taxation as a means to reduce consumption. For the greatest impact, taxation measures should be combined with other policy interventions such as increasing access to healthy foods while decreasing access to unhealthy foods in schools, daycares, and recreation facilities; restrictions on the marketing of foods and beverages to children; and effective, long-term educational ini…

Association Between Food Desert Residence and Ischemic Stroke Risk: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Food deserts (FDs) are low-income areas with poor access to healthy foods. FD residents have higher rates of several cardiovascular risk factors, but the link between FDs and stroke has not been well studied. We evaluated whether FD residence was associated with incident ischemic stroke within the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Study (GCNKSS) and whether this association was due to low income, poor food access, or both. METHODS: All hospitalized stroke cases in the GCNK region were ascertained during calendar year 2015 using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for s…

Orthopaedic Manifestations of Scurvy in an Otherwise Healthy Child from a Low Opportunity Index Neighborhood: A Case Report.

CASE: A 23-month-old otherwise healthy female child from a low opportunity index neighborhood presented with 1 month of lower extremity pain and refusal to bear weight. Radiographic evaluation of bilateral knees revealed lucent metaphyseal bands and a nondisplaced distal femoral metaphyseal corner fracture. A workup identified vitamin C deficiency (scurvy), and the child's symptoms and radiographic abnormalities resolved with vitamin C supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: Scurvy should be considered in children with unexplained musculoskeletal symptoms who may lack access to nutrient-dense foods.
