The authors report the case of intracranial neuritis ossificans presenting as chronic accessory neuropathy. Neuritis ossificans is a rare reactive nerve disease that has been reported to affect systemic peripheral nerves. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first documented case of neuritis ossificans observed in a cranial nerve. The lesion was revealed on imaging studies and appeared, intraoperatively, as a nonsessile intradural lesion with significant calcification of rootlets of the lower cranial nerves. Microscopically, the lesion featured zonal heterotopic calcification typ

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease involving both upper and lower motor neurons with no effective cure. Electrophysiological studies have found decremental responses during low-frequency repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) except for diffused neurogenic activities. However, the difference between ALS and generalized myasthenia gravis (GMG) in terms of waveform features is unclear. In the current study, we explored the variation trend of the amplitudes curve between ALS and GMG with low-frequency, positive RNS, and the possible mechanism is

Brain stem lesions frequently cause dysfunction of the lower cranial nerves. Even with successful treatment, dysfunction may remain. Various methods for rehabilitating the patient with persistent lower cranial nerve dysfunction are presented.

BACKGROUND: Spinal accessory nerve (SAN) palsy is rare in clinical settings. Iatrogenicity is the most common cause, with cervical lymph node biopsy accounting for > 50% of cases. However, SAN palsy after lymph node needle biopsy is extremely rare, and the injury site is difficult to identify because of the tiny needle mark.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with left neck pain and difficulty abducting and shrugging her left shoulder after left cervical lymph node needle biopsy. Five weeks earlier, a needle biopsy had been performed at the surgery clinic beca

We reviewed the results of repair of the spinal accessory nerve in seven patients seen between September 1994 and January 1996. The nerve had been injured during biopsy of a cervical lymph node in six patients and during removal of a bullet in one. The average interval between the time of the injury and the repair of the nerve was eight months (range, three to fourteen months). An end-to-end repair of the nerve was performed in six patients, and a neurolysis was done in one. The average duration of follow-up was thirty-two months (range, twenty-four to thirty-nine months). Postoperatively, all

OBJECTIVE: The myelin impairment in demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease leads to various degrees of axonal degeneration, the ultimate cause of disability. We aimed to assess the pathophysiological changes in axonal function related to the neuropathy severity in hypo-/demyelinating CMT patients associated with myelin protein zero gene (MPZ) deficiency.
METHODS: We investigated four family members (two parents and two sons) harboring a frameshift mutation (c.306delA, p.Asp104ThrfsTer14) in the MPZ gene, predicted to result in a nonfunctional P0, by conventional conduction studies an

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variants of the spinal root of the accessory nerve and cervical plexus are well known but other variants are exceptionally rare.
METHODS: A prospective study of 160 selective neck dissections was undertaken following an index case, where a presumed C1 nerve (travelling with the hypoglossal nerve) was found to innervate sternocleidomastoid (SCM). A search was subsequently made for this variant while not compromising the neck dissection surgery itself. Eight cases could not be included due to metastatic disease precluding safe dissection in this area. A nerve stimulator w

We are reporting a case of multiple ancient schwannoma of the accessory nerve in a 57 year old male. Accessory schwannomas are rare with only 19 cases reported in literature so far. Ancient schwannoma is even rarer in the head and neck region with no other cases associated with the accessory nerve being reported in literature so far.

The glossopharyngeal, vagus, and accessory nerves are discussed in this article, given their intimate anatomical and functional associations. Abnormalities of these lower cranial nerves may be intrinsic or extrinsic due to various disease processes. This article aims to review these nerves' anatomy and demonstrates the imaging aspect of the diseases which most commonly affect them.

Droopy shoulder has been proposed as a cause of thoracic outlet syndrome. Two patients developed manifestations of neurovascular compression upon arm abduction, associated with unilateral droopy shoulder and trapezius muscle weakness caused by iatrogenic spinal accessory neuropathies following cervical lymph node biopsies. The first patient developed a cold, numb hand with complete axillary artery occlusion when his arm was abducted to 90 degrees. The second patient complained of paresthesias in digits 4 and 5 of the right hand, worsened by elevation of the arm, with nerve conduction findings

OBJECTIVE: To determine feasibility of ultrasonography in detecting the normal accessory nerve as well as pathologic changes in cases of accessory nerve palsy.
METHODS: Four patients with accessory nerve palsy were investigated by ultrasonography. Three cases of accessory nerve palsy after lymph node biopsy and neck dissection were primarily diagnosed on the basis of ultrasonography using a 5- to 12-MHz linear transducer. In addition, we performed ultrasonography in 3 cadaveric specimens to show the feasibility of detecting the accessory nerve.
RESULT: Nerve transection (n = 2), scar tissue

Occipital condyle fractures are rare and are usually associated with severe head and cervical spine injury. A 71-year-old man developed unilateral palsies of the 9th through 12th cranial nerves (Collet-Sicard syndrome) due to a fracture of the occipital condyle, which was diagnosed by computed tomography. He was treated conservatively and made a good recovery.

Iatrogenic lesions of the spinal nerve are rare and generally occur during cervicotomy for aetiological assessment of adenopathy. The spinal nerve is essentially damaged at two sites: the supraclavicular fossa (where the nerve is very superficial) and in the antero-lateral triangle of the neck (where the nerve approaches the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle). The lesion of the spinal nerve essentially presents in the form of paralysis of the trapezius; which should be examined systematically postoperatively and at subsequent consultations, as the clinical signs may only develop after a certain lat
