Experimental studies have shown that in traffic accidents with frontal impact the new airbag system can significantly reduce the incidence of severe injuries and fatal outcome. The question of whether the airbag itself induces specific patterns of injury needs further investigation. Two cases of traffic accidents with airbag protection are presented here. The first case report clearly shows the life-saving and injury-reducing effect of the airbag system in a traffic accident with frontal impact at 100 km/h. Consecutive road traffic accidents attenders with multiple or 'whiplash' neck injuries were assessed following the accident, at 3 months and 1 year. Considerable changes in vehicle-driving behaviour and in attitudes to travel were reported. Concern about travel as a driver and as a passenger was usual. A sizeable proportion of subjects suffered severe and persistent anxiety associated with limitations of everyday life. The findings have implications for clinical assessment and treatment, road safety, and medical reports in compensation proceedings.

There are many well known causes to acute inflammation of the appendix. During the past 50 years it has been discussed if blunt abdominal trauma can be related to acute appendicitis. There are several anatomical and pathophysiological speculations of why the appendix is vulnerable to inflammation following injury. In this case a patient developed appendicitis few hours after a car accident and was diagnosed by a trauma computed tomography of the abdomen. The anatomical and pathophysiological causes have been described.

Fatal motor vehicle accidents (fMVAs) as well as accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists in Uusimaa county in 2008 were reviewed. Of the fMVAs, acute disease attacks while driving caused 26.5% (9/34) of the drivers' deaths. This equalled with the number of alcohol-related fatal accidents. Heart attack was the main cause (7/9 disease attacks). Three bicyclists (3/14; 21%) died for health reasons; two for ventricular fibrillation and one for alcohol intoxication probably combined with cardiac arrhythmia. BACKGROUND: In traffic accidents, eye injuries occur as isolated or with polytrauma. They may involve just one eye, but simultaneous injuries to both eyes do happen occasionally. The aim of our paper was to reveal the risk factors, in an effort to reduce the number of such accidents and to prevent bilateral ocular damage.

A morphological study, macro and microscopical, was made of brain lesions in 120 victims of fatal road traffic accidents. Parahipoccampal hernia, Duret haemorrhage and infarction in the medio-basal occipital lobe, clear evidence of raised intracranial pressure, occurred in 43 (35.8%) patients.
