Enhancing ocular accommodation function and intraocular pressure symmetry through Mingshi Qigong: A pilot case series on visual fatigue recovery.

This preliminary case series explored the effects of a 6-week Mingshi Qigong (MQ) intervention on ocular function in five individuals with visual fatigue and coexisting ocular conditions (cataract or glaucoma). Pre- and postintervention assessments included refractive power, accommodative microfluctuations (AMFs), high-frequency component (HFC), and intraocular pressure (IOP) symmetry. Participants showed refractive changes, some of which may lie within test-retest error margins. Reductions in HFC values reflected enhanced accommodative stability, accompanied by a shift from tension-dominant t

Comparison of ocular accommodation throughout the day in children using 0.05% low-dose atropine versus controls: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the effect of 0.05% low-dose atropine on ocular accommodation (amplitude and accuracy) and how its effect changed throughout the day. METHODS: Sixteen children aged 6-16 years using 0.05% atropine and 16 controls not using atropine were enrolled. Monocular accommodative amplitude was measured objectively using a Grand Seiko WAM-5500 open field autorefractor (formerly manufactured by RyuSyo Industrial Co.) and subjectively using the push-up method. Accuracy of accommodation was measured using monocular estimation (MEM) retinoscopy. All mea

Effects of Physical Exercise Combined with Accommodative Training on Visual Acuity and Ocular Biometric Parameters in Children Aged 6-7.

Promoting visual health in early childhood is crucial for visual development, and effective school-based interventions are urgently needed. This study examined the effects of physical exercise combined with accommodative training on visual acuity and ocular biometric parameters in children aged 6-7 years. A total of 163 first-grade students were allocated by intact classes to an experimental group (n = 82), which received a 32-week physical exercise program incorporating visual tasks designed to stimulate ciliary-muscle accommodation, or a control group (n = 81), which received standard physic

Longitudinal development of ocular biometric components and refractive error in hyperopic children with infantile versus late-onset accommodative esotropia.

PURPOSE: To examine the developmental patterns of refractive error and optical components in hyperopic children with infantile (onset ≤12 months of age) accommodative or late-onset (18-48 months of age) accommodative esotropia. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included children with infantile (n = 34) or late-onset (n = 63) accommodative esotropia. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and keratometry (K1, K2) were obtained with a Lenstar LS 900. Lenstar measures were recorded <6 months after cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) was deri

A benign syndrome of transient loss of accommodation in young patients.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a benign condition of transient, isolated accommodation paralysis in young patients as a specific entity. DESIGN: Case series of children and young adults with transient loss of accommodation who were referred to the neuro-ophthalmology clinic at the Meir Medical Center from 1997 to 2006. Five young patients who complained of an inability to read had full neuro-ophthalmological examinations. Those who were found to have isolated accommodation paralysis without any other related ocular or systemic findings were prescribed reading glasses and followed up. RESULTS: All 5

[Accommodation-convergence coupling using the stereomicroscope].

The term "instrument myopia" means an accommodative effort caused by the view into the microscope. This accommodation may be connected with the convergence position of the eye. Heterophoria should be developed if accommodation-induced convergence of the eyes does not harmonize with convergence of the ocular axes of a stereomicroscope. In 16 probands, an accommodation of 1.1 +/- 0.72 dpt and esophoria of +11.1 +/- 8.5 pdpt were measured at parallel ocular axes. The accommodation increased by 0.12 dpt/degree convergence with increasing convergence angle of the ocular axes. When the visual field

Association between accommodative accuracy, hypermetropia, and strabismus in children with Down's syndrome.

PURPOSE: A significant proportion of children with Down's syndrome have been shown to have reduced accommodation. The purpose of this study was to investigate any association between reduced accommodation and refractive error, strabismus, visual acuity, and other ocular parameters. METHODS: Subjects were children with Down's syndrome enrolled in a longitudinal cohort to monitor visual development. Twenty-seven children with accurate accommodation were age-matched to children with reduced accommodation based on their most recent assessment for which a full, reliable data set was available. Eac

IMI Accommodation and Binocular Vision in Myopia Development and Progression.

The role of accommodation in myopia development and progression has been debated for decades. More recently, the understanding of the mechanisms involved in accommodation and the consequent alterations in ocular parameters has expanded. This International Myopia Institute white paper reviews the variations in ocular parameters that occur with accommodation and the mechanisms involved in accommodation and myopia development and progression. Convergence is synergistically linked with accommodation and the impact of this on myopia has also been critiqued. Specific topics reviewed included accommo

[The esotropia of the convergence-excess type subdivided into two forms].

There are two types of convergence excess esotropia in the classification of strabismus in our country. One is nonrefractive accommodative esotropia and another is nonaccommodative convergence excess esotropia. Inadequate heterophoria method to determine the AC/A ratio does not distinguish between a high AC/A ratio and nonaccommodative convergence excess. The diagnosis of nonrefractive accommodative esotropia is based on the presence of a high AC/A ratio as established with the gradient method to distinguish this condition from nonaccommative convergence excess.

Dynamic performance of accommodating intraocular lenses in a negative feedback control system: a simulation-based study.

A dynamic model of ocular accommodation is used to simulate the stability and dynamic performance of accommodating intraocular lenses (A-IOLs) that replace the hardened natural ocular lens that is unable to change focus. Accommodation simulations of an older eye with A-IOL materials having biomechanical properties of a younger eye illustrate overshoots and oscillations resulting from decreased visco-elasticity of the A-IOL. Stable dynamics of an A-IOL are restored by adaptation of phasic and tonic neural-control properties of accommodation. Simulations indicate that neural control must be reca

[Importance of studying the accommodation function in the diagnosis of clinical forms of hypermetropia].

Two hundred and thirty-one patients, aged 6 to 18, with hypermetropia were examined. They were shared between two groups with respect to an accommodation state: group 1--patients with weak accommodation, group 2--patients with normal accommodation. The below ocular parameters were registered for groups 1 and 2, respectively: axial size--22.35 mm and 21.58 mm, corneal diameter--11.48 mm and 10.74 mm, scleral ring diameter in the projection of the scleral central portion--14.66 mm and 13.98 mm, ocular refracting power--59.79 d and 62.23 d, corneal refraction--41.85 d and 42.82 d, and lens refrac

Fluctuations in accommodation: a review.

When a young observer attempts to accommodate steadily on a fixed stimulus, the nominally steady-state response shows small instabilities or fluctuations (sometimes termed microfluctuations or oscillations). These fluctuations typically have an amplitude of a few tenths of a dioptre and a frequency spectrum extending up to a few Hertz. The properties of these fluctuations are described for various viewing conditions: pupil diameter, target vergence, target form, target contrast, and target luminance all influence the frequency spectra of the oscillations, as may anomalies of vision such as amb
