The basis of the early detection of otosclerosis is dual: first, a better knowledge of the mechanism of the disease itself, which is of enzymatic origin, and the starting point of which is an antigen-antibody conflict between the otic capsule and the embryonic cartilaginous remnants; - second, the fact that the otospongiotic disease appears to be a genetic deafness with an autosomal inheritance and about 40% of genes penetrance. Consequently an early detection is absolutely essential to combat the disease at its beginning and to assure its prevention. The early diagnosis of the otospongiotic/o

In this experimental study a procedure is developed which enables the conversion of susceptance and conductane tympanograms to reactance and resistance tympanograms. Special attention was given to the subtraction of the ear canal admittance. The procedure was applied to bell-shaped and W-notched susceptance and conductance tympanograms. Computed reactance curves showed always an inverted-V shape, computed resistance curves were always flat.

OBJECTIVE: The apparent effect of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) on middle ear- and cochlear impedance has led researchers to investigate the use of wideband acoustic immittance as a screening tool when SSCD is suspected. The purpose of the study was to describe the absorbance characteristics and tympanometric values of ears with confirmed SSCD measured at tympanometric peak pressure (TPP) and at ambient pressure.
METHODS: Wideband Acoustic Immittance was performed at ambient pressure and at TPP on ten participants (12 ears) with confirmed SSCD, as well as on an age- and gender

The ear's complex acoustic impedance locus for frequencies from 200 Hz to 2 kHz was obtained for 20 subjects screened for normal hearing. The purpose of the experiment was to observe "kinks" in the total driving point impedance locus of the ear, as measured by acoustic impedance in the ear canal at a depth comparable to that of clinical audiometry. Such impendance bumps or loops are expected to contribute to irregularities seen in high-frequency clinical tympanograms. The transducer probe consisted of two 1/8 inch condenser microphones inserted in the ear canal. The instrumentation used a cont

In both mammals and birds, the mechanical behavior of the middle ear structures is affected by the mechanical impedance of the inner ear. In this study, the aim was to quantify the acoustic impedance of the avian inner ear in the ostrich, which allows us to determine the effect on columellar vibrations and middle ear power flow in future studies. To determine the inner ear impedance, vibrations of the columella were measured for both the quasi-static and acoustic stimulus frequencies. In the frequency range of 0.3-4 kHz, we used electromagnetic stimulation of the ossicle and a laser Doppler vi

The measurement of the acoustic reflex threshold is a basic component of the diagnostic audiological test battery that may subject patients to potentially harmful sound pressures. A wide-band acoustic impedance and reflectance system (D. H. Keefe, R. Ling, & J. C. Bulen, 1992) was investigated as a means of obtaining reflex thresholds at a reduced level and as a means of providing a more complete characterization of the reflex than current clinical methods provide. Reflex thresholds obtained by measuring changes in wide-band admittance, reflectance, and power were at least 8 dB lower than thos

The Hearing Level scale has been established in national and international standards for tones presented via supra-aural earphones. However, the standards do not encompass stimuli from the probes of ipsilateral impedance meters. This study transfers the calibration of standardised earphones to the probes of five types of impedance meter and therefore enables the intensities of their ipsilateral stimuli to be defined in terms of Hearing Levels. The method used for transfer of calibration is based on equality of acoustic reflex responses elicitied by the impedance meter probe and by a standardis

Otitis Media (OM) is a prevalent condition in children that can lead to hearing impairment and significant healthcare costs. Inaccuracy in primary care and equipment cost in developing countries are concerning issues in OM diagnostics. Acoustic Reflectometry (AR) offers a low-cost, non-invasive diagnostic alternative, though it has fallen short on accuracy in previous studies. The primary aim of this study was to establish a computational simulation and an experimental model able to reproduce AR performed on human individuals to enable further research and accuracy improvement. The secondary a

A review of the literature reveals a surprisingly sparse amount of true documentation concerning the validity of using tuning forks as an adjunctive measure in the diagnosis of hearing impairment. Most reports are historical or anecdotal. With this in mind, a protocol was set up to identify the value of three standard tuning fork tests--the Rinne, the Weber, the Bing Occlusion--at frequencies of 256, 512 and 1024 Hz. The data were compared to otologic examination, audiometry and acoustic impedance. Results indicate the Rinne, Weber and Bing Occlusion tests do not accurately predict the type of

Interpretation of tympanometry commonly relies on the historical convention of classifying findings according to large and arbitrary threshold shifts of tympanometric peak pressure (TPP). This convention had value for prior generations of otolaryngologists in diagnosing severe, chronic middle ear disease requiring surgical intervention but may not be well suited for the present-day evaluation of less severe disease. The existing definition of a type C curve (less than -100 daPa) is likely insensitive to detect subtle abnormalities, including some presentations of obstructive eustachian tube dy

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Differentiating restorative materials from enamel during dental examinations is challenging because of their similar appearances. Even with ultrasound microscopy, the acoustic properties of restorative materials remain unassessed. This study investigated the potential of ultrasound microscopy to differentiate between enamel, composite resin, and glass ionomer.
METHODS: Extracted third molars served as the tooth model: a 1.2 mm-diameter cylindrical cavity drilled into the enamel and restored with either composite resin (flowable bulk-fill or paste) or glass-ionomer cemen

An acoustical transmission line model of the middle-ear cavities and mastoid air cell system (MACS) was constructed for the adult human middle ear with normal function. The air-filled cavities comprised the tympanic cavity, aditus, antrum, and MACS. A binary symmetrical airway branching model of the MACS was constructed using an optimization procedure to match the average total volume and surface area of human temporal bones. The acoustical input impedance of the MACS was calculated using a recursive procedure, and used to predict the input impedance of the middle-ear cavities at the location
