Filtering to match hearing aid insertion gain to individual ear acoustics.

When hearing aid gain is prescribed by software, gain is calculated based on the average acoustics for the age of patient, gender, mold type, and so on. The acoustics of the individual's ear often vary from the average values, so there will be a mismatch between the prescribed gain and the real-ear gain. Real-ear measurement can be used to verify the gain and adjust it to meet targets, but the quality of the match will be limited by the number of channels and the flexibility of the hearing aid. A potential way to improve this process is to generate a filter that compensates for variations in r

Sounds of emotion: production and perception of affect-related vocal acoustics.

In his writing Darwin emphasized direct veridical links between vocal acoustics and vocalizer emotional state. Yet he also recognized that acoustics influence the emotional state of listeners. This duality-that particular vocal expressions are likely linked to particular internal states, yet may specifically function to influence others-lies at the heart of contemporary efforts aimed at understanding affect-related vocal acoustics. That work has focused most on speech acoustics and laughter, where the most common approach has been to argue that these signals reflect the occurrence of discrete

Automated inference of respiratory and syringeal biomechanical trajectories from birdsong acoustics.

Songbirds, in particular zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), provide a powerful model for investigating the neural mechanisms of learned vocal behavior. Researchers typically rely on the acoustic structure of birdsong to quantify vocal behavior. As a more direct measure of motor control, we present VIBE: Vocal acoustic Inversion to Biomechanical Estimates, an open-source pipeline that recovers the biomechanical control parameters of song production from the pitch and amplitude of the acoustic waveform. Biomechanical models of the songbird syrinx describe vocal production with two continuously

Echoes of Evolution in Holocentridae: Harmony Between Phylogeny, Morphology and Acoustics.

Holocentridae are nocturnal reef fishes that rely on acoustic communication in various behavioral contexts. Using a multidisciplinary approach combining phylogenetics, morphology, and acoustic data from 53 species, we reconstructed the evolutionary history of this communication system within the family. Our results reveal two main clades corresponding to the subfamilies Myripristinae and Holocentrinae, with congruent differences in both the morphology of the sound-producing apparatus and acoustic features. Interestingly, at finer taxonomic scales, closely related species often share similar so

Enhancing cancer therapy via acoustics: chemotherapy-enhanced tunable acoustofluidic permeabilization (ChemoTAP).

Mechano-chemo cancer treatment is an emerging therapeutic strategy that enhances chemotherapy efficacy by combining chemical agents with mechanical forces to improve drug uptake and overcome resistance. However, current approaches for delivering mechanical forces, including magnetic stress, hydrodynamic shear, and ultrasonic cavitation, suffer from limited tunability, poor spatial precision, and off-target effects, restricting their clinical potential. Here, we introduce ChemoTAP (chemotherapy-enhanced tunable acoustofluidic permeabilization), an acoustofluidic system that utilizes standing su

Acoustics of thermoviscous fluids: The Kirchhoff-Helmholtz representation in generalized form.

The Kirchhoff-Helmholtz representation of linear acoustics is generalized to thermoviscous fluids, by deriving separate bounded-region equations for the acoustic, entropy, and vorticity modes in a uniform fluid at rest. For the acoustic and entropy modes we introduce modal variables in terms of pressure and entropy perturbations, and develop asymptotic approximations to the mode equations that are valid to specified orders in two thermoviscous parameters. The introduction of spatial windowing for the mode variables leads to surface source and dipole distributions as a way of representing bound

Effects of thyroplasty implant stiffness on glottal shape and voice acoustics.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal fold (VF) stiffness and geometry are determinant variables in voice production. Type 1 medialization thyroplasty (MT), the primary surgical treatment for glottic insufficiency, changes both of these variables. Understanding the cause and effect relationship between these variables and acoustic output might improve voice outcomes after MT. In this study, the effects of thyroplasty implants with variable stiffness on glottal shape and acoustics were investigated. METHODS: In an ex vivo human larynx phonation model, bilateral MT with implants of four stiffness levels (1386, 21.

Characterizing phantom arteries with multi-channel laser ultrasonics and photo-acoustics.

Multi-channel photo-acoustic and laser ultrasonic waves are used to sense the characteristics of proxies for healthy and diseased vessels. The acquisition system is non-contacting and non-invasive with a pulsed laser source and a laser vibrometer detector. As the wave signatures of our targets are typically low in amplitude, we exploit multi-channel acquisition and processing techniques. These are commonly used in seismology to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of data. We identify vessel proxies with a diameter on the order of 1 mm, at a depth of 18 mm. Variations in scattered and photo-acous

Laryngeal physiology and voice acoustics are maintained after minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective single-arm study investigated both laryngeal physiology and voice acoustic measures in patients undergoing minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) due to primary hyperparathyroidism (primary HPTH). BACKGROUND: Avoidance of recurrent or superior laryngeal nerve injury and maintenance of normal laryngeal physiology and vocal function are key goals in the treatment of primary HPTH. No data are available comparing pre- and postoperative MIP laryngeal physiology and voice acoustics. METHODS: Patients served as their own controls and underwent identical pre- and pos

Neural-operator surrogates for outdoor acoustics using parameterized wind and terrain profilesa).

Outdoor sound propagation is strongly shaped by boundary layer meteorology and terrain, yet high-fidelity simulation remains too expensive for rapid scenario studies. This paper shows the development of neural-operator surrogates that map parameterized wind profiles and/or terrain profiles to acoustic fields over a region of interest, using training data from a two-dimensional linearized Euler equation finite-difference time-domain solver with Sobol'-sequence sampling. Two operator-learning families are evaluated: deep operator networks and Fourier neural operators (FNOs) on wind-only, terrain

Model-Informed Speech Enhancement Using Virtual Room Acoustics and Acoustic Descriptor Optimization.

Reverberation and background noise remain persistent obstacles to achieving clear and intelligible speech in enclosed environments. Conventional data-driven or purely empirical dereverberation systems often perform well only under training conditions but lack robustness and physical interpretability when exposed to new acoustic spaces. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a physics-informed speech enhancement algorithm that integrates analytical room acoustics modeling with a descriptor-guided optimization framework. The method employs virtual field simulations based on the Helmho

Effects of Thyroarytenoid Activation Induced Vibratory Asymmetry on Voice Acoustics and Perception.

INTRODUCTION: Asymmetry of vocal fold (VF) vibration is common in patients with voice complaints and also observed in 10% of normophonic individuals. Although thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle activation plays a crucial role in regulating VF vibration, how TA activation asymmetry relates to voice acoustics and perception is unclear. We evaluated the relationship between TA activation asymmetry and the resulting acoustics and perception. METHODS: An in vivo canine model of phonation was used to create symmetric and increasingly asymmetric VF vibratory conditions via graded stimulation of bilateral TA

Vowel variability and contrast in Childhood Apraxia of Speech: acoustics and articulation.

Phoneme production may be affected by limited speech motor control in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), with a general instability of acoustic targets across multiple repetitions of speech stimuli. This acoustic and Ultrasound Tongue Imaging (UTI) study shows that increased variability and reduction of contrast in vowel production is found in native Italian speakers with CAS, particularly as far as the height dimension is concerned. The data suggest that vowel production should play a major role in CAS diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, this study shows that a combined acoustic and articulato

Acoustics of Emotional Prosody Produced by Prelingually Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants.

Purpose: Cochlear implants (CIs) provide reasonable levels of speech recognition quietly, but voice pitch perception is severely impaired in CI users. The central question addressed here relates to how access to acoustic input pre-implantation influences vocal emotion production by individuals with CIs. The objective of this study was to compare acoustic characteristics of vocal emotions produced by prelingually deaf school-aged children with cochlear implants (CCIs) who were implanted at the age of 2 and had no usable hearing before implantation with those produced by children with normal hea

Localization Algorithms for Hearing Devices Influenced by Individual Variability in Ear Acoustics.

BACKGROUND: Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) contain time and level cues and may be utilized in automatic algorithms to identify locations of sound, a desirable feature for next-generation hearing devices. Due to substantial variability in individual head sizes and ear acoustics, individualized HRTFs are expected to provide the best localization results. However, acquiring individualized HRTFs for each user is time-consuming. METHODS: This study constructed three binaural and/or monaural algorithms suitable for hearing devices. A linear classifier was trained on HRTF databases from a s

Sparse time-delay and amplitude estimation of multipath arrivals in ocean acoustics.

We estimate multipath arrival time delays and amplitudes with high resolution for accurate characterization of ocean acoustic channels. Although matched filtering (MF) is robust and widely used, its output represents a superposition of contributions from multiple arrivals, which can bias delay and amplitude estimates. More advanced high-resolution (HR) methods exist but are usually computationally expensive. To mitigate those limitations, we propose a sparse parametric framework that models the received signal as a superposition of a sparse number of time-delayed replicas of a known source wav

Swallow Detection with Acoustics and Accelerometric-Based Wearable Technology: A Scoping Review.

Swallowing disorders, especially dysphagia, might lead to malnutrition and dehydration and could potentially lead to fatal aspiration. Benchmark swallowing assessments, such as videofluoroscopy or endoscopy, are expensive and invasive. Wearable technologies using acoustics and accelerometric sensors could offer opportunities for accessible and home-based long-term assessment. Identifying valid swallow events is the first step before enabling the technology for clinical applications. The objective of this review is to summarize the evidence of using acoustics-based and accelerometric-based wear
