Entomopathogenic potential of Verticillium and Acremonium species (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes).

Hyphomycetes with conidia formed in slimy heads from hyaline mycelium were isolated from a range of insect hosts. Isolation on artificial medium and microscopic examination revealed that these fungi in many cases were not Verticillium lecanii despite a superficial resemblance to this common entomopathogen. The fungi were identified as Verticillium fusisporum, Verticillium psalliotae, Verticillium lamellicola, and species of Acremonium. Isolates of these fungi were bioassayed against the sweet-potato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and against the housefly (Musca domestica) to examine their entomopat

Complete biosynthetic pathways of ascofuranone and ascochlorin in Acremonium egyptiacum.

Ascofuranone (AF) and ascochlorin (AC) are meroterpenoids produced by various filamentous fungi, including Acremonium egyptiacum (synonym: Acremonium sclerotigenum), and exhibit diverse physiological activities. In particular, AF is a promising drug candidate against African trypanosomiasis and a potential anticancer lead compound. These compounds are supposedly biosynthesized through farnesylation of orsellinic acid, but the details have not been established. In this study, we present all of the reactions and responsible genes for AF and AC biosyntheses in A. egyptiacum, identified by heterol

A case of colonization of a prosthetic mitral valve by Acremonium strictum.

A case of colonization of a prosthetic mitral valve in a 73-year-old Spanish male by the fungus Acremonium strictum W. Gams is described. The valve was replaced due to paravalvular leak and severe insufficiency and the patient died of multiorgan failure. The identity of the fungus was determined by morphological studies and it was confirmed by the analysis of the ITS region sequence analysis. Molecular studies seem to demonstrate that A. strictum is a species complex. The case emphasizes the potential high risk of fungal infection for patients with prosthetic valves.

Acremonium kiliense infection in a child with chronic granulomatous disease.

Infection by unusual microorganisms can be one of the clinical manifestations of primary immunodeficiency (PID). We report on a four-month-old child with pneumonia caused by the fungus Acremonium kiliense as the first clinical manifestation of chronic granulomatous disease. We emphasize the importance of an active search for unusual organisms in immunodeficient patients, and a precise diagnosis and early institution of specific treatment against such microorganisms for the reduction of the morbidity and mortality of these patients.

Acremonium strictum fungaemia in a paediatric patient with acute leukaemia.

A 7-y-old boy with relapsed acute lymphatic leukaemia developed fungaemia due to Acremonium strictum, a fungus belonging to the group of the hyaline hyphomycetes. Initially, the fungus was misdiagnosed as Candida sp. due to the presence of abundant adventitious forms. At the time of diagnosis the patient was neutropenic and had a central venous catheter (CVC) in situ. The formation of an occlusive thrombotic mass in the v. subclavia dextra complicated the infection. Treatment consisted of amphotericin B, fluconazole, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and removal of the CVC. However

Acremonium nail bed mycetoma masquerading as subungual squamous cell carcinoma.

Acremonium is a large fungal genus that is comprised of approximately 150 species, found ubiquitously in nature. Although the majority are recognized as being saprophytes in soil and pathogens of plants, several species are emerging as causative agents of a variety of human infections, including mycetomas. Herein, we present a young man that was referred to our department with a painful subungual mass that developed following traumatic inoculation of Acremonium spp. In recent years, the role of Acremonium spp. has been increasingly recognized in localized infections, such as mycetoma, in human

Cepholosporium acremonium. A new strain of fungus causing white piedra.

A strain of fungus (CZ408) was isolated from white piedra of a female child. Mycological identification showed that it is the first case in the world. Asymptomatic white nodules were noted on the hair of the scalp, and they were distributed irregularly along the shaft 4-10 cm from the scalp. The nodules, hard, not easily broken or removed, consist of hyphae, spores and metabolic materials around the hair. Oral antimycotic drugs are effective in treating this disease.

Acremonium and trichosporon fungal keratoconjunctivitis in a Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius).

A 6-year-old male leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) was presented with a 2-year history of recurrent dysecdysis involving the ocular surface of both eyes. Ophthalmic examination revealed ocular surface desiccation and multifocal superficial ulcerative keratitis with patchy remnants of retained shed. Other abnormalities included stomatitis and mandibular and maxillary osteomyelitis. Topical and systemic antibiotic therapy, oral vitamin A, and improved husbandry conditions resolved the stomatitis and osteomyelitis but did not improve the ocular surface. Corneal cytology collected with a cyt

Mycetoma Caused by Acremonium Species in a Patient with Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

Patients with chronic granulomatous disease are predisposed to fungal infections and are therefore routinely prescribed antifungal prophylaxis. We report a case where acremonium was responsible for causing a cutaneous infection (mycetoma) despite antifungal prophylaxis. Treatment with voriconazole was initiated and the infection gradually resolved. This case highlights the need for careful clinical follow-up and thorough investigation of patients who have a neutrophil immunodeficiency.

Sarocladium and Acremonium infections: New faces of an old opportunistic fungus.

The genera Acremonium and Sarocladium comprise a high diversity of morphologically and genetically related fungi generally found in the environment, although a few species, mainly Sarocladium kiliense and Acremonium egyptiacum, can also be involved in many human infections. Clinical management of opportunistic infections caused by these fungi is very complex, since their correct identification is unreliable, and they generally show poor antifungal response. More than 300 clinical cases involving a broad range of Acremonium/Sarocladium infections have so far been published, and with this review

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by acremonium sclerotigenum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acremonium sclerotigenum exhibits antagonistic properties against various detrimental organisms, including bacteria, nematodes, and mites. As the predominant species within the Acremonium genus, it is characterized as an opportunistic pathogenic fungus that commonly inhabits soil and plants as a saprotroph. Additionally, it has been identified as the etiological agent of superficial infections, such as onychomycosis, and, less frequently, invasive infections. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a unique case involving a 79-year-old male who developed peritoneal dialysis-associa
