Cervicofacial Actinomyces viscosus infection in a Brazilian fila: a case report and literature review.

A five-month-old, male Brazilian fila presented with a three-day history of a focal swelling in the left superior palpebra and a focal, subcutaneous swelling over the dorsal cervical region. Both lesions initially responded to warm compresses and a two-week course of oral amoxicillin-clavulanic acid therapy. The eyelid swelling recurred after discontinuation of the oral antibiotic therapy. The lesion was progressive and was refractory to trimethoprim-sulfadiazine therapy. Culture and sensitivity performed from a surgical biopsy sample of the eyelid mass identified Actinomyces viscosus and othe

Colonization of the teeth of rats by human and rodent oral strains of the bacterium Actinomyces viscosus.

The mouths of rats were infected with human and rodent strains of A. viscosus and streptomycin-rifamycin-resistant (SR) mutants of these strains. The establishment, adherence to the teeth and cell dose required for infection were determined. Human and rodent strains established equally well on the teeth and did not differ in their initial adherence to teeth. The cell dose required for infection was much lower for rodent than for human strains (less than 10(5) compared to 10(7) - 10(8) c.f.u.). The SR mutants established as well as their parents except for one SR strain, that did not establish

Characterization of the binding of Actinomyces naeslundii (ATCC 12104) and Actinomyces viscosus (ATCC 19246) to glycosphingolipids, using a solid-phase overlay approach.

Actinomyces naeslundii (ATCC 12104) and Actinomyces viscosus (ATCC 19246) were radiolabeled externally (125I) or metabolically (35S) and analyzed for their ability to bind glycosphingolipids separated on thin layer chromatograms or coated in microtiter wells. Two binding properties were found and characterized in detail. (i) Both bacteria showed binding to lactosylceramide (LacCer) in a fashion similar to bacteria characterized earlier. The activity of free LacCer was dependent on the ceramide structure; species with 2-hydroxy fatty acid and/or a trihydroxy base were positive, while species wi

Fatal subdural empyema caused by Streptococcus constellatus and Actinomyces viscosus in a child--case report.

Group milleri streptococci that colonize the mouth and the upper airways are generally considered to be commensal. In combination with anaerobics, they are rarely responsible for brain abscesses in patients with certain predisposing factors. Mortality in such cases is high and complications are frequent. We present a case of fatal subdural empyema caused by Streptococcus constellatus and Actinomyces viscosus in a previously healthy 7-year-old girl.

An immunohistochemical study on the localization of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Campylobacter rectus and Actinomyces viscosus in human periodontal pockets.

The localization and distribution of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Campylobacter rectus and Actinomyces viscosus were studied in human periodontal pockets. After obtaining voluntary consent from 9 patients, 12 teeth and their surrounding periodontal tissue with advanced adult periodontitis were extracted carefully so as not to change the structure of the periodontal pockets. The specimens were processed into serial sections. One of the sections was stained with Brown & Brenn-modified Gram stain to observe the distribution of bacteria. The others were stained immunohistochemically by the Labelled S

Root surface caries subsequent to gingivectomy in rats inoculated with Streptococcus sobrinus (mutans) and Actinomyces viscosus.

We studied the effect of oral infection with cariogenic micro-organisms on alveolar bone loss and root surface caries subsequent to gingivectomy in rats. Thirty-six rats were fed diet MIT 200 (67% sucrose); one-half, the controls, had antibiotics added to the diet. At ages 18, 19, and 21 days, the experimental group was orally infected with streptomycin-resistant Streptococcus sobrinus (mutans) 6715 and Actinomyces viscosus M-100. At age 30 days, all animals were subjected to a gingivectomy on maxillary and mandibular left quadrants. The experimental group was re-inoculated at age 36 days. Ani

Lipoproteins of Actinomyces viscosus induce inflammatory responses through TLR2 in human gingival epithelial cells and macrophages.

Actinomyces viscosus has been suggested to be associated with periodontal disease. However, the pathogenicity of this bacterium is not known. In this study, we examined inflammation-inducing activity by A. viscosus. Whole cells and a lipophilic fraction of A. viscosus ATCC19246 induced production of interleukin-8 and tumor necrosis factor alpha from both human oral epithelial cells and human monocytoid cells. This cytokine production was blocked by lipoprotein lipase treatment of the lipophilic fraction. In addition, anti-Toll-like receptor 2 antibody blocked the cytokine production. These res

Complement activation by individual and combinations of monoclonal antibodies to Actinomyces viscosus T14V fimbriae: a probe for epitope distribution on these polymeric proteins.

The spatial requirements for IgG activation of the classical complement pathway has provided a basis for utilizing complement consumption by individual and pairs of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to compare the repeating epitope patterns of the type 1 and type 2 fimbriae of Actinomyces viscosus T14V and to examine the co-operative effects of mAbs against these polymeric proteins. Three of five mAbs specific for the type 1 fimbriae consumed complement when assayed individually. Four patterns of complement consumption were detected with pairs of these mAbs: inhibition, addition, enhancement or syn

Genetic control of serum antibody responses of inbred mice to type 1 and type 2 fimbriae from Actinomyces viscosus T14V.

Antibodies reactive with type 1 and type 2 fimbriae from Actinomyces viscosus T14V specifically inhibit the adherence of A. viscosus T14V to salivary pellicle-coated tooth surfaces and other bacteria, and these antibodies are thought to modulate colonization by this microorganism. These studies were done to determine whether previously noted differences in the antibody responses of inbred mice to type 1 and type 2 fimbriae might be under genetic control. The serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibody responses of inbred, F1 hybrid, and H-2 congenic mice, immunized with A. viscosus T14V cell

A rare case of primary actinomycosis of the breast caused by Actinomyces viscosus: diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration cytology under ultrasound guidance.

We report the case of a 27-year-old woman with primary actinomycosis of the breast. Diagnosis was established by culture examination of specimen recovered by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) under ultrasound guidance. To our knowledge, this is the first description in the literature of a case of primary actinomycosis of the breast caused by Actinomyces viscosus. Twenty-nine previous cases of primary actinomycosis of the breast have been published, but these were caused by the more common species Actinomyces israelii. Targeted antibiotic therapy did not ameliorate the condition, thus drai

Cariogenic actinomyces identified with a beta-glucosidase-dependent green color reaction to Gardenia jasminoides extract.

The oral bacteria Actinomyces naeslundii and Actinomyces viscosus are known to contribute to the initiation and progression of human dental caries, especially root caries. We report that both A. naeslundii and A. viscosus react with a component in the Gardenia jasminoides extract to produce a distinct green product. This green color reaction was found to be dependent on the bacterial beta-glucosidase. The reaction is specific for cariogenic actinomyces, and it can detect as few as 10(4) cells of A. naeslundii and A. viscosus per ml.

The comparative cariogenicity and plaque-forming ability in vivo of four species of the bacterium Actinomyces in gnotobiotic rats.

Gnotobiotic WAG/RIJ rats on a high sucrose diet were monoinfected with 12 strains of Actinomyces spp. Moderate levels of caries were induced by a single strain of Actinomyces naeslundii and low levels by two strains of Actinomyces viscosus, three strains of A. naeslundii and one strain of Actinomyces israelii. No caries was induced by single strains of A. viscosus and A. israelii or by three Actinomyces odontolyticus strains. Only fissure caries was observed. Scanning electron microscopy showed that all strains colonized the fissures and most colonized the lingual surface of the teeth, but to

[A case of chronic actinomycosis in a carcinomatous lesion].

A gram positive, catalase-positive Actinomyces viscosus strain has been isolated from cervicofascial carcinomatous lesion. Identification of this human strain of Actinomyces viscosus was carried out with biochemical tests. Tests for catalase, indole, nitrate reduction, methyl red reaction acetoin (VP) and gelatin hydrolysis were done by the procedure recommended by the technique described by Grencser and Slack. Carbohydrate fermentation tests were done with three basal media: Actinomyces fermentation broth, a thioglycolate fermentation base and a brain-heart infusion broth.

Preterm Labor Caused by Hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes, Low Platelet Count (HELLP) Syndrome and Postpartum Infection Complicated with Actinomyces Species: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Actinomyces species are normal flora of the upper respiratory, female genital, and gastrointestinal tract. Actinomyces species are generally considered to have a low virulence potential. Here we report one case of Actinomyces viscosus isolated from a neonatal blood culture as a consequence of extreme prematurity in the presence of HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count) syndrome. CASE REPORT A 23-week gestational age female infant was born to a 32-year-old mother. The pregnancy was complicated by severe HELLP syndrome leading to cesarean section at 23-week gest

Comparative pathogenicity of Actinomyces species in mice.

The comparative pathogenicity of different species of Actinomyces was studied in a susceptible weanling-mouse model. After the intraperitoneal injection of strains of Actinomyces israeli, A. naeslundi, A. viscosus and Arachnia propionica, numerous abscesses developed in the intestine, mesentery, liver, and at the site of injection. Lesions were not produced by A. odontolyticus. A. naeslundi and A. viscosus produced acute lesions that resolved after a few weeks. Abscesses produced by rough strains of A. israeli and Arach. propionica persisted and led to a slowly progressive chronic infection. V

Actinomyces bowdenii sp. nov., isolated from canine and feline clinical specimens.

Four strains of a previously undescribed Actinomyces-like bacterium were isolated from canine and feline clinical specimens. Phenotypic studies indicated the strains were members of the genus Actinomyces, and most closely resembled Actinomyces viscosus serotype I and Actinomyces slackii. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated the unknown bacterium constitutes a new subline within a group of Actinomyces species, which includes Actinomyces bovis, the type species of the genus. Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence it is proposed that the unknown bacterium be classified
