Actinomycosis is a rare granulomatous disease caused by commensal bacteria (Actinomycetaceae family) of the oropharynx, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tract. Infection most commonly involves the cervicofacial region but less frequently the abdominal region, typically secondary to a disruption of normal gastrointestinal mucosa. We present a patient with vague symptoms of fevers and myalgias and a recent diagnosis of rectal cancer. On CT, there were multiple centrally hypoattenuating hepatic lesions suspicious for metastasis vs abscesses, also confirmed by ultrasound. Initial image guided biop

Immunocytochemical methods were used for the demonstration of Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces naeslundii and Arachnia propionica in bacterial colonies found in 7 routine biopsies from periapical inflammatory lesions. All 3 species were found in one specimen, both A. israelii and A. propionica in 3 specimens, and one of each species in the remaining 3 biopsies. Specificity controls by enzyme immunoassay showed that antiserum to A. israelii reacted also with A. odontolyticus, and that to A. naeslundii with A. viscosus, while antiserum to A. propionica did not show any cross-reactions with Acti

The cation content of Bifidobacterium bifidum subsp. pennsylvanicum was markedly influenced by the washing procedure of the cells, by the growth phase and the temperature, and by the composition of the culture medium. Optimal retention of cations was achieved by washing with 0.25 M MgCl2 at 20C. The intracellular Na+ concentration rose during growth in normal medium to a constant value in the stationary phase, the K+ concentration rose in the exponential phase, but fell in the stationary phase. Cells from 29-C cultures contained more Na+ and less K+ in the stationary phase than did cells from

A patient coming from an area of dry tropical forest was studied. This patient had in his right foot two tumor-like growths localized, one in the anterior and superior part of the foot, the other near the malleoli. From the first tumor, light-colored grains were obtained, and Actinomadura madurae was cultured. From the tumor near the malleoli only black grains were isolated from which a Pyrenochaeta sp. was cultured.

BACKGROUND: Urachal remnants (URs) represent uncommon and underdiagnosed entities that are usually detected incidentally at imaging or present clinically different manifestations.
METHODS: Here we presented a boy with UR infection. Ultrasonography and bacterial culture and identification were performed. He received antibiotic treatment and underwent surgical excision of the cyst.
RESULTS: The patient presented with both a urachal cyst and umbilical-urachal sinus. UR infection was caused by Actinomyces turicensis. He recovered well from the operation without complications.
CONCLUSIONS: The p

We describe the presentation of a 72-year-old woman with concurrent diagnoses of lung adenocarcinoma in conjunction with disseminated Actinomyces meyeri infection; a rare pathogen which can mimic lung cancer both symptomatically and radiologically. The patient was found to have a pelvic mass initially presumed to be cervical metastases-later confirmed to be of xanthogranulomatous inflammatory origin following transvaginal ultrasound-guided biopsy. The pathogenic cause, identified following pleural aspirate, being a fully sensitive A. meyeri infection; treated with prolonged course amoxicillin.

BACKGROUND: Infective lesions of the jaws and adjacent tissues (lumpy jaw disease, LJD) have been recognized as one major cause of death of captive macropods. Fusobacterium necrophorum and Actinomyces species serve as the main source of LJD in kangaroos and wallabies. Currently, little is reported about LJD or similar diseases in opossums.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of actinomycosis resembling the entity lumpy jaw disease in a gray four-eyed opossum, caused by a novel species of Schaalia. A 2.8 year old male Philander opossum was presented with unilateral swelling of the right m

We herein report a case of presumed septic shock due to Actinotignum schaalii bacteremia with urinary tract infection. A 65-year-old Japanese man suffering from a fever was diagnosed with septic shock due to urinary tract infection. A urine sample was additionally incubated under 5% CO2 and anaerobic conditions after A. schaalii was identified in a blood culture, but A. schaalii was not detected in the urine culture. If Gram-positive rods are observed on Gram staining of a urine sample in symptomatic patients with a predisposing urogenital condition, 5% CO2 and an anaerobic culture of a urine

Chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, and the macrolide, tylosin, are extensively used for growth promotion and disease prophylaxis in the cattle and swine industries in the US. Arcanobacterium pyogenes, a common inhabitant of the mucosal surfaces of cattle and swine, is also a pathogen associated with a variety of infections in these animals. A broth microdilution technique was used to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of 48 A. pyogenes isolates to macrolides, lincosamides and tetracyclines. The MIC50 and MIC90 for chlortetracycline were 0.12 and 8 mg/l, respectively. Similarly, the MI

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is a granulomatous suppurative infection caused by filamentous Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria from the family Actinomycetaceae. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of otogenic brain abscess associated with Actinomyces turicensis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an immunocompetent 5-year-old boy with recurrent otitis media who re-presented to the emergency department with a 3-week history of otorrhoea, progressive anorexia, vomiting and lethargy. He was admitted with a working diagnosis of otitis media and dehydration, and was treated with i

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses can occur when suppurative, bacterial or protozoan infections spread to the brain. Here, we report a rare case of Actinomyces meyeri-induced brain abscess in a pregnant woman.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 38-years-old primipara admitted to the emergency department at our hospital with a 4-day history of fever and vomiting. The symptoms worsened rapidly during the 8 h prior to admission, and the patient experienced a sudden loss of consciousness 4 h before arrival to the unit. BACKGROUND: Actinobaculum suis is a bacterium known to cause infections of the urogenital tract of sows. Infection can occur through close contact to boars, who frequently carry the pathogen in their preputial diverticulum but do not become clinically diseased themselves. In the current case, Actinobaculum suis was isolated from pyogranuloma of inflamed epididymis in a boar with poor fertility.
CASE PRESENTATION: Increased return to oestrus rate, which worsened after the purchase of a new boar, was reported in an organic farm in Switzerland. During herd examination, azoospermia of the boar wa

INTRODUCTION: Dermatological manifestations of actinomycosis are classical, most often related to Actinomyces israelii. In most of the cases, they occur near to the primary focus, and in the cervicofacial area. Systemic dissemination with cutaneous distant metastasis is rare, most often related to A. israelii, too. We report an original case of upper limb actinomycosis associated with an oral localisation and due to an unusual bacteria.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man was referred to the Department of dermatology for a skin lesion of the left hand and wrist. Biopsies revealed actinomycosis rel

Amycolatopsis mediterranei produces an important antibiotic rifamycin, the biosynthesis of which involves many unusual modifications. Previous work suggested a putative P450 enzyme encoded by rif16 within the rifamycin biosynthetic gene cluster (rif) was required for the conversion of the intermediate rifamycin SV into the end product rifamycin B. In this study, we genetically proved that a putative transketolase encoded by rif15 is another essential enzyme for this conversion. Expression of merely rif15 and rif16 in a rif cluster null mutant of A. mediterranei U32 was able to convert rifamyci

BACKGROUND: Vaginal dysbiosis, characterized by Lactobacillus depletion and anaerobic enrichment, may be relevant to ovarian cancer (OC) outcomes, yet comprehensive microbiome characterization in OC patients remains limited. Here, we characterize the prevalence and predictors of vaginal microbiome dysbiosis among racially diverse OC patients in the US.
METHODS: We performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing on vaginal samples from 132 OC patients recruited as part of the population-based ORCHiD study. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a computational topic modeling approach, was applied to identify d

Previous studies have suggested a link between gut microbiota and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). However, interpreting these findings is difficult due to various factors that influence microbiome composition and the limitations of observational studies, such as confounding variables and reverse causation. This study aims to explore the causal relationship between gut microbiota and IDA using Mendelian randomization (MR) to overcome these limitations. We conducted a 2-sample MR analysis using data from genome-wide association studies from the MiBioGen Consortium and the UK Biobank. The gut micro

Actinomycosis is a rare chronic infection, caused by species of the bacterium Actinomyces spp. This report proposes oral breast trauma as a cause of infection. An adult female in her 30s presented with a recurrent left breast abscess to a local hospital. She had previously undergone nine operations for abscess in the past 2 years. Shortly prior to her first presentation, a sexual partner with reported dental infection bit her periareolar area. The treating team noted that her bacterial culture from the first operation was positive for Actinomyces spp. She was treated with long-term intravenous
