Factors affecting activities of daily living among patients with Wilson disease.

Wilson disease (WD) is a congenital copper metabolism disorder with various manifestations and can be treated with oral medication. This study examined the factors related to decline in activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with WD as research in this area remains limited. We enrolled 308 patients with WD, including patients who participated in a national survey and those who sought cares at the Department of Pediatrics, Toho University Ohashi Medical Center, from 2016 to 2017. We analyzed the association between ADL decline and factors including age at diagnosis, period from diagnosis

Dyscalculia in Early Adulthood: Implications for Numerical Activities of Daily Living.

Numerical abilities are fundamental in our society. As a consequence, poor numerical skills might have a great impact on daily living. This study analyzes the extent to which the numerical deficit observed in young adults with Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) impacts their activities of everyday life. For this purpose, 26 adults with DD and 26 healthy controls completed the NADL, a standardized battery that assesses numerical skills in both formal and informal contexts. The results showed that adults with DD had poorer arithmetical skills in both formal and informal settings. In particular, adul

Cigarette Smoking and Activities of Daily Living in Ocular Myasthenia Gravis.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junction, commonly affecting the ocular muscles. Cigarette smoking has been shown to influence many autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, but its effect on myasthenia gravis has not been well studied. We sought to determine whether cigarette smoking influenced disease-related symptoms in ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG). METHODS: We performed a prospective, clinic-based cross-sectional study in a single academic neuro-ophthalmology practice. All patients diagnosed with OMG between N

The Alzheimer's disease activities of daily living international scale (ADL-IS).

BACKGROUND: Activities of daily living (ADL) deficits are integral components of dementia disorders, and ADL measures are among the most robust markers of the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite this acknowledged importance, no clearly useful ADL instrument for cross-cultural application in pharmacologic trials in the early stages of AD had been available. METHOD: An international effort was launched to develop an ADL scale for pharmacologic trials in early AD. Steps taken from 1990 to the present included: (1) international scientific working group meetings and reviews, (2) reviews o

Grip Force Coordination as a Determinant of Independence in Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living in Incomplete Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report.

Upper limb rehabilitation for individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) primarily emphasizes strengthening residual muscles to enable grasping through the tenodesis action. While this approach is essential for achieving basic activities of daily living (ADLs), smooth object manipulation and fine motor performance require not only muscle strength but also the ability to regulate grip force. However, grip force modulation during tenodesis-based grasping has rarely been evaluated or specifically targeted in rehabilitation for cervical SCI. We report the case of a right-handed man in his

Validation of rule-based inference of selected independent activities of daily living.

This paper explores the validity of a rule-based inference method of selected independent activities of daily living (ADLs). An inexpensive ADL monitoring system was installed in the community for 37 days to monitor a middle-aged, healthy individual living alone. The subject was given a personal digital assistant (PDA), running custom activity diary software, and asked to record activities in real-time. Rule-based activity inference algorithms were refined on data from 17 days, and data from the remaining 20 days were used for validation. The chisquare statistic was computed for 2 x 2 continge

Effects of LSVT BIG® on Bradykinesia During Activities of Daily Living.

Bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD) can limit activities of daily living (ADL) through disruption of roles and routines. Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT BIG) is a commonly used program for persons with PD but it is not known if LSVT BIG can impact bradykinesia. This preliminary study sought to determine if LSVT BIG participation would impact bradykinesia during ADL. Sixty patient charts were reviewed following participation in the LSVT BIG program. Time to perform three functional tasks was recorded before and after participation. A significant decrease in time, on average, of 14.5 s

Functional range of motion for basic seated activities of daily living tasks.

INTRODUCTION: Efficient performance of activities of daily living (ADLs) requires coordinated movement across multiple upper-limb joints. However, current assessments of joint range of motion (ROM) during ADLs often rely on subjective evaluation and lack precise quantitative data. The functional ROM required for upper-limb movements in a seated position remains unclear, despite its clinical relevance for older adults and individuals with mobility limitations who frequently perform ADLs while seated. Additionally, little is known about how joint-motion requirements differ across similar ADL tas

Functional correlates of instrumental activities of daily living in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) includes the integration of task-initiation, -planning, and -performance. Little is known on the cerebral perfusion correlates of these subcomponents of IADL in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In 121 AD patients, cerebral perfusion, using single-photon emission computed tomography, in 13 bilateral regions of interest (ROI) and the perfusion correlates of IADL subcomponents, rated on the Disability Assessment in Dementia scale, were explored. Significant correlations were observed between IADL initiation and multiple bilateral prefrontal-striatal-anterio

Postural adjustments during activities of daily living with an upper limb prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: People with upper limb difference (ULD) using prostheses often use compensatory trunk movements to perform activities of daily living (ADL). Compensatory movements may provide additional challenges for the postural control system to maintain balance. However, no prior studies have quantified postural adjustments during ADLs in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine if upper limb prosthesis users make larger postural adjustments during ADLs compared to people without ULD. METHODS: Nine individuals with ULD and nine without ULD performed unimanual and bimanual A

How to capture activities of daily living in myotonic dystrophy type 2?

Myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2) lacks validated patients´ reported outcomes (PROs). This represents a limit for monitoring disease progression and perceived efficacy of symptomatic treatments. Our aim was to investigate whether PROs for activities of daily living designed for other neuromuscular diseases could be used in DM2. Sixty-six DM2 patients completed the following PROs: DM1-Activ-c, Rasch-built Pompe-specific activity (R-PAct) scale, McGill-pain questionnaire, fatigue and daytime sleepiness scale and Beck depression inventory (BDI-II). Clinical data and motor outcome measures (6-minute
