The role of hypoleptinemia in the psychological and behavioral adaptation to starvation: Implications for anorexia nervosa.

This narrative review aims to pinpoint mental and behavioral effects of starvation, which may be triggered by hypoleptinemia and as such may be amenable to treatment with leptin receptor agonists. The reduced leptin secretion results from the continuous loss of fat mass, thus initiating a graded triggering of diverse starvation related adaptive functions. In light of leptin receptors located in several peripheral tissues and many brain regions adaptations may extend beyond those of the hypothalamus-pituitary-end organ-axes. We focus on gastrointestinal tract and reward system as relevant examp

Analysis of Psychological Disorders and Adaptive Influence of Blended Learning of College Students.

College students' learning disabilities and learning adaptability refer to the fact that college students, on the basis of their own basic abilities and personality characteristics, actively make self-adjustments by interacting with their learning and learning environment problems in order to achieve a balance between the internal and external learning environment and the ability to be in a state of vigorous development. From the perspective of student development, the mastery of learning knowledge and skills directly affects the development of college students themselves, and the level of ada

Psychological distress and adaptational problems associated with benzodiazepine withdrawal and outcome: a replication.

The aim of this study was to replicate and extend the findings of O'Connor, Bélanger, Marchand, Dupuis, Elie, and Boyer [Addict. Behav. 24 (1999) 537], which had established a psychosocial profile associated with psychological distress in benzodiazepine (BZD) use. Forty-one participants with anxiety or insomnia, receiving maintenance therapy of BZD for at least 8 weeks, participated in a 20-week, tapered discontinuation protocol with physician counselling. Drug type and use was monitored throughout. Questionnaire measures of anxiety, behavioural inhibition, neuroticism, withdrawal complaints,

Adaptation of the Online Problem Gambling Behavior Index: Associations with Emotional Reactivity and Psychological Distress.

Problematic online gambling has emerged as a growing behavioral health concern, fueled by the accessibility, anonymity, and immediacy of digital gambling environments. This two-phase study aimed to adapt the "Online Problem Gambling Behavior Index (OPGBI)" for Turkish-speaking populations and to examine the affective mechanisms underlying problematic gambling behavior through the lens of the Emotion Dysregulation Model. In Study-I (N = 674; 62.6% male; Mage = 35.23), confirmatory factor analysis supported a three-factor structure: gambling behavior, limit-setting, and communication with operat

Cultural adaptation of a brief psychological intervention for PTSD in severe mental illness: a Botswana context.

High rates of trauma exposure among patients with severe mental illness (SMI) in Botswana highlight the need for appropriate interventions. Culturally adapted interventions have been reported to be more acceptable, effective and feasible. This study aimed to culturally adapt the Brief Relaxation, Education and Trauma Healing (BREATHE), a brief psychological intervention to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among people with SMI in Botswana. The cultural adaptation process followed the steps outlined by previous research. They included a community assessment to identify needs, selecti

Adaptation to Preceding Acute Psychological Stress is Associated With Subsequent Stress Coping Levels via Corticoid Receptors.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal axis response is essential for coping with acute stressors, while maladaptive stress coping may increase the risk of major depressive disorder. We previously demonstrated that behavioral patterns induced by prior psychological stress predict coping levels in response to future stressors. This study investigated whether activating corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and corticosteroid receptors mediates psychological stress-induced coping behavior. METHODS: Behavioral responses in mice exhibiting a fear response elicited by exposure to 2,5-dihydro-2,

Meaning-making while staying connected matters in psychological adaptation during pandemic: a longitudinal moderated mediation study.

Adversity may bring about both negative and positive changes in psychological adaptation. Although there is mounting evidence regarding the psychological distress during the pandemic, the other side of posttraumatic change, posttraumatic growth (PTG) and its predictors are relatively underexamined. Moreover, there is a paucity of longitudinal investigations that examined intra- and interpersonal predictors responsible for both sides of psychological adaptation. Therefore, this study comprehensively examined the longitudinal relationship among cognitive processing, social support, and adaptatio

Participants were 114 black women (mean age = 51.1, 27-77 years) who had completed breast cancer treatment 0-12 months before enrollment

Profiles of Parental Home-Based Involvement: Associations with Preschool Children's Positive Psychological Traits and Social Adaptation.

PURPOSE: Although prior studies have examined the association between parental involvement and children's social development, less attention has been paid to the division of parental roles and the heterogeneity of parental involvement patterns. Adopting a person-centered approach, this study identified the latent profiles of fathers' and mothers' home-based involvement and further examined how these profiles were associated with preschool children's positive psychological traits and social adaptation. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 672 intact Chinese families with preschool
