A rare giant extraocular, anterior chest wall sebaceous carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare aggressive cutaneous malignant tumour. It accounts for less than 1 % of all cutaneous malignant tumours. Sebaceous carcinomas are divided into ocular and extraocular constituting 75 % and 25 % respectively. The most common extraocular site is parotid gland. Chest wall is a rare site of this tumour. CASE PRESENTATION: In line with SCARE criteria (Agha et al., 2018 [1]), this report is a case of a 45-year-old African male patient who presented with a two-year history of a large right anterior chest wall tumour. He reported that the tumour started a

Lymphadenoma of the salivary gland: clinicopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of 33 tumors.

Lymphadenomas (LADs) are rare salivary gland tumors. Their clinicopathologic characteristics and etiopathogenesis are poorly understood. We examined 33 LADs in 31 patients (17 women and 14 men) aged 11-79 years (median 65 years). There were 22 sebaceous LADs in 21 patients (9 women and 12 men) and 11 non-sebaceous LADs in 10 patients (8 women and 2 men). Two patients had synchronous double tumors. Twenty-six tumors (79%) arose in parotid, three in the neck, and two each in submandibular gland and oral cavity. Extraparotid tumors were seen in 2 of 21 (10%) patients with sebaceous and 4 of 10 (4

Clinical and histopathological profile of primary caruncular lesions.

PURPOSE: To provide a retrospective analysis of lesions of the caruncle which have been very rarely reported in the literature. METHODS: A retrospective review of all the caruncular lesions between January 2000 and January 2020 was done at a single tertiary eye care hospital. The lesions were classified as benign and malignant lesions. Clinicopathological correlation was done for the excised lesions. RESULTS: A total of 87 caruncular lesions were included in the study. Males (59%) were affected more than females (41%). The mean age at presentation was 44 ± 20 years. The mean duration of comp

Atypical 'benign behaviour' of eyelid sebaceous carcinoma.

Eyelid sebaceous carcinoma is a rare tumour with slow growth and it is one of the most aggressive malignancies of the eyelid. Death rate can reach 6%. The diagnosis is often delayed because it is confused with other periocular lesions. The authors describe a case with atypical presentation, regarding rapid growth rate and exophytic aspect. Female, 78 years, presenting lower eyelid tumour with 4 months of evolution. Ophthalmological examination showed a tarsal exophytic tumour (22 mm), non-adherent to bulbar conjunctiva. She was medicated topically for 3 months, with the diagnosis of chalazio.

Establishment and Characterization of a Novel Human Ocular Adnexal Sebaceous Carcinoma Cell Line.

PURPOSE: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a malignant eyelid tumor of the ocular adnexa that is primarily treated via surgical excision. Few therapies exist in advanced cases, and medical therapy is limited because of our incomplete understanding of SC biology. Herein, we describe a technique to culture human ocular adnexal SC for use as an in vitro model. METHODS: Human ocular adnexal SC tumor cells were isolated from a patient undergoing orbital exenteration surgery and named Bascom Palmer 50 (BP50). They were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium/nutrient mixture F-12 supplemented with 1

Perilipin and adipophilin expression in sebaceous carcinoma and mimics.

Although adipophilin has been reported to be a sensitive marker for sebaceous carcinoma, others have noted its expression in squamous cell carcinoma and a variety of noncutaneous tumors, suggesting that lipid droplet accumulation is a frequent feature of neoplastic cells. We investigated the expression of adipophilin and perilipin in 101 cutaneous carcinomas. They included 30 cases of sebaceous carcinoma, 28 squamous cell carcinoma with clear cell change (18 invasive and 10 in situ tumors), 8 hidradenocarcinomas, 1 spiradenocarcinoma, 10 porocarcinomas, 4 malignant chondroid syringomas, 1 mali

Ocular Sebaceous Carcinoma In Situ With Biphenotypic Differentiation: A Reappraisal of the Alternative Origin of the Tumor.

Ocular sebaceous carcinoma is an uncommon, aggressive tumor arising from the Meibomian gland, Zeis gland, or sebaceous glands in the caruncle or eyelashes. We described a rare case of sebaceous carcinoma in situ in a 51-year-old female that was characterized by intraepithelial growth of sebaceous carcinoma cells with no invasive carcinoma in the underlying sebaceous glands. Early stromal invasion was identified that featured 2 distinctive but focally intermixed populations of sebaceous carcinoma cells and squamous carcinoma cells. The 2 populations of cells exhibited their respective distinct

Intraoral sebaceous carcinoma: A rare presentation on the tongue and review of the literature.

Intraoral sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is exceedingly rare, especially in the tongue. We reported the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of a rare SC case in a 59-year-old male who presented a painful ulcer on the tongue's posterior region. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of atypical basaloid cells with round to oval nuclei and prominent nucleoli arranged in lobes showing prominent sebaceous differentiation and areas of holocrine secretion. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for pan-cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) and negativity for cytokerat

Extra-Ocular Sebaceous Carcinoma in Situ of the Arm of an Elder Male: An Unusual Presentation in an Atypical Location.

Background. Sebaceous carcinoma in situ outside the ocular region is an exceedingly uncommon. It is an intraepidermal neoplasm originating from sebaceous glands limited to the epidermis with no invasion into the underlying dermis or beyond. Although sebaceous carcinoma in situ is predominantly observed in ocular regions, particularly the eyelids, instances of its occurrence in extraocular locations are infrequent, with only a limited number of examples reported in the literature. Case Presentation. A 63-year-old man presented with a left posterior arm lesion. Microscopic examination revealed a

Sebaceous carcinoma: an updated review of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a very rare and aggressive form of skin cancer that arises from the sebaceous glands. SC can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly affects the head and neck, especially the upper eyelid. SC is the third most common malignancy of the eyelid and has the potential to metastasize and be fatal; therefore, it is vital for dermatologists to remain acquainted with this malignancy and its most current treatment options. Most commonly presenting as a painless lump or thickening of skin on the eyelid, SC has an insidious progression that may not prompt the patient to s

A case of Muir-Torre syndrome with a keratoacanthoma and sebaceous neoplasms: Clinicopathological features and a speculation on the pathogenesis of cutaneous tumor type.

Muir-Torre syndrome is a hereditary condition characterized by occurrence of sebaceous neoplasms or keratoacanthomas and visceral tumors. The most common mechanism for this syndrome is a constitutional defect in the mismatch repair genes. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with a mutator L homologue 1 (MLH1) mutation. She had a history of endometrial and colorectal cancers. The patient presented with a typical keratoacanthoma on the right cheek and numerous sebaceous neoplasms on the face and trunk. Seven sebaceous adenomas and a low-grade sebaceous carcinoma were excised. Most sebaceou

Sebaceous carcinoma: evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

Sebaceous carcinoma usually occurs in adults older than 60 years, on the eyelid, head and neck, and trunk. In this Review, we present clinical care recommendations for sebaceous carcinoma, which were developed as a result of an expert panel evaluation of the findings of a systematic review. Key conclusions were drawn and recommendations made for diagnosis, first-line treatment, radiotherapy, and post-treatment care. For diagnosis, we concluded that deep biopsy is often required; furthermore, differential diagnoses that mimic the condition can be excluded with special histological stains. For t

Demonstration of a Borst-Jadassohn-Like Phenomenon in Sebaceous Carcinoma of the Eyelid.

A 77-year-old male presented with a diffuse, papular erythematous conjunctival mass that demonstrated on pathologic examination lobules of tumor in the conjunctival substantia propria and tarsus. The cells displayed numerous cytoplasmic vacuoles with extreme nuclear pleomorphism, consistent with sebaceous carcinoma. The overlying palpebral conjunctival epithelium exhibited regions of carcinoma in situ containing some vacuolated cells, alternating with a more classical appearance of pagetoid spread among normal surviving keratinocytes. Further analysis disclosed vesicular positivity for adipoph

Mucinous eccrine sweat gland adenocarcinoma of the eyelid.

A firm, slow-growing cystic mass of the left upper eyelid developed in a 73-year-old man 5 years after a clinically diagnosed "sebaceous cyst" at the same site had been incised and drained. Histopathological examination disclosed a primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of eccrine sweat gland origin. The patient had no recurrence after 3.5 years of follow-up. Histochemical demonstration of sialomucin differentiates mucinous sweat gland carcinoma from other mucus-secreting adenocarcinomas, such as those arising from lacrimal gland tissue. Enzymatic histochemical analyses or ultrastructural studies are
