[Unusual autoimmune and neoplastic associated diseases in Sjogren's syndrome].

In an unselected series of 12 patients with Sjögren's syndrome the following autoimmune diseases were observed: severe myxedema due to Hashimotos thyroiditis in four, subclinical thyroid hypofunction in one, diffuse hyperthyroidism in one, glomerulonephritis in two, chronic active hepatitis in one, lupus erythematodes disseminatus in three (one with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura), classical rheumatoid arthritis in two. A rare familial occurrence was seen in two sisters. The only male in this group exhibited coexistence of a benign adenolymphoma of the parotid gland (Warthin's tumor) with

Monomorphic adenomas of the major salivary glands: clinicopathological study of 44 cases.

We report 44 cases of monomorphic adenoma (MA) of the major salivary glands observed during the years 1979-1989. All of these tumours were reviewed and classified on the basis of the World Health Organisation (WHO) criteria. Histological type, site, sex and age were considered. 34 cases of adenolymphoma were observed, all of them located in the parotid glands; 10 MA without lymphoid stroma were located in both parotid and submandibular glands. Distinctive histological and clinico-pathological features of the latter group of tumours are discussed, as well as the diagnostic criteria in distingui

[A 20-year retrospective histoclinical analysis of parotid gland tumors in the ENT Department AM in Katowice].

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland neoplasms represent the diverse group of tumours encountered by the head and neck surgeons. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study is analysis of 531 patients with parotid gland tumours in patients treated in ENT Department during 1986-2006. We analysed surgical treatment and intraoperative tumour stage. The results of histological diagnosis were presented. RESULTS: The frequency of incidence of benign neoplasm was 80%. The most frequent tumour was pleomorphic adenoma--75% and adenolymphoma--16%. Malignant tumours constituted 20% of all gland tumours. Mucoepidermoid (27

[Autoimmune diseases of the salivary glands].

The structural and functional features of the salivary glands and their function associated with the immunocompetent system are described. The disturbance of such association, in the author's opinion, is conducive to the development of a peculiar tumour pathology (adenolymphomas) and autoimmune processes (Sjögren syndrome autoimmune parotitis). Based on the data from the literature two forms of this disease are distinguished: (1) a distinct nosological form developing as a result of various exo- and endogenous injuries, and (2) manifestations of other diseases, as a rule, of the autoimmune gen

Chromosomal patterns in Warthin's tumor. A second type of human benign salivary gland neoplasm.

The cytogenetical observations in eight successfully cultured human adenolymphomas are reported. When the results were considered with those of two previously reported cases, three main stemline groups could be distinguished: (a) one with a normal karyotype and noted as a primary or secondary stemline in all hitherto studied tumors; (b) a second group with only numerical changes, either loss of the Y chromosome or trisomy or monosomy 5; and (c) a third group with only structural changes, as a rule with one or two reciprocal translocations. With regard to the last group, studies of many more ca

Uncommon Site Presentation: A Case Report of Extraparotid Warthin's Tumor.

Warthin's tumor, also known as adenolymphoma or papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, is a benign tumor almost exclusively found in the parotid gland and is the second most common type of benign parotid tumor. Its manifestation as an extraparotid lesion is rare, with a low incidence in the submandibular gland. In this context, we present a case of Warthin's tumor of the submandibular gland in a 66-year-old man who presented with a painless lateral cystic cervical mass. This case highlights the clinical and radiological evidence of an uncommon extraparotid tumor location, with the diagnosis beco

[Oncocyte cells in salivary tumors: frequency, histoenzymological and ultrastructural characteristics].

Two types of salivary monomorphic adenomas, the so-called adenolymphoma and oncocytoma (75 cases in a series of 873 salivary gland tumors) were studied. These tumors were almost always located in major salivary glands (essentially in the parotid gland). They were much more common in men (85%) than in women. The oncocyte represented the characteristic cell in these two neoplasms. By electron microscopy, they were seen to contain numerous and abnormal mitochondriae and well-developed lysosomal systems. These findings were correlated with a high level of activity of oxidative enzymes and of acid

Salivary gland tumours: is colour Doppler imaging of added value in their preoperative assessment?

Using a Toshiba SSA-270A Colour Duplex Scanner, 15 patients with suspected parotid and submandibular gland tumours had preoperative duplex scanning done. Peak systolic doppler shifts (fmax) were recorded and their vascularity was also subjectively scored. There were no arteries identified within the substance of contralateral normal glands. All recordings were analysed retrospectively and an independent histological assessment of tumours was made. Pleomorphic adenomas (n = 9) had a median peak systolic frequency (fmax) of 0.8 kHz, while adenolymphomas (n = 4) had a fmax of 1.65 and the two mal

Pathogenesis of Warthin's Tumors: A Critical Synthesis of the Evidence.

PURPOSE: Warthin tumor (WT) is the second most common benign parotid neoplasm, and its reported incidence has risen over recent decades, with a narrowing male predominance that parallels tobacco exposure trends. Whether WT is a true clonal neoplasm or a metaplastic process remains contested. We synthesize contemporary evidence on WT pathogenesis into a unified framework and articulate its diagnostic implications. METHODS: Critical narrative synthesis. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science from inception through May 16, 2026 for "Warthin tumor" and its synonyms combined with s

Clinical-pathological correlations in Warthin tumors of parotid gland: a series of 10 cases.

Warthin tumor is described using various terms, such as papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, adenolymphoma or monomorphic adenoma. It is a medical condition related to the salivary glands, namely a benign cystic tumor which contains an epithelial component and an abundant lymphoid stroma. It is also named Warthin tumor after Aldred Scott Warthin, the pathologist who described this entity in 1929 by observing it in two patients. Warthin tumor is a benign one and ranks secondly in terms of the most common not malignant salivary gland tumor located in the parotid gland. Because of its cystic natu

Lymphomas presenting as lumps in the parotid region.

The clinical and pathological features of 17 patients who had lymphomas of the parotid region are discussed. Although it is in general impossible on clinical grounds to make a pathological diagnosis on clinical examination of a lump in the parotid region, features which are not typically seen in the majority of patients with parotid lumps, but which were present in 11 (65 per cent) of those patients, are emphasized. Multiple ipsilateral and bilateral lumps were seen in 30 per cent of our patients with lymphomas of the parotid region. However, these are statistically more likely to indicate the

Warthin tumor in an unusual site: a case report.

Warthin tumor (papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, adenolymphoma) is a benign neoplasm from salivary glands and is almost restricted to the parotid gland and the periparotid lymph nodes. Its etiopathogenesis has been associated with tobacco smoke. Several authors believe that the tumor develops from heterotopic salivary gland tissues or through the attraction of a heavy lymphoid reaction. Most cases involve the lower pole or the tail of the parotid. Since its description, a few cases have been reported in other sites, like the submandibular salivary gland. This study aimed to describe a rare

Nasopharyngeal Warthin's Tumors: A Case Report and Minireview.

Warthin's tumors of the head and neck are more common in the parotid and salivary glands and are extremely rare in the nasopharynx. This paper reports the clinical data of a patient with a nasopharyngeal Warthin's tumor and posterior nostril atresia who underwent nasal endoscopic nasal mass resection combined with posterior nostriphoplasty, and the patient has no tumor recurrence during the postoperative follow-up of until 14 months. This case report, combined with a literature review, conducted an in-depth analysis of nasopharyngeal Warthin's tumors to enable more otolaryngology specialists t

Warthin tumor of the upper lip: an unusual location of a benign salivary gland tumor.

Warthin tumor (papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum) is a benign salivary gland tumor involving almost exclusively the parotid gland. The lip is a very unusual location for this type of tumor, which develops only rarely in minor salivary glands. The case of 42-year-old woman with Warthin tumor arising in minor salivary glands of the upper lip is reported.

Long-term follow-up of over 1000 patients with salivary gland tumours treated in a single centre.

Between 1947 and 1992, 1403 patients with 1432 salivary gland tumours were treated at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. There were 1194 epithelial neoplasms: parotid, 1082 (91 per cent); submandibular, 47 (4 per cent); minor glands, 65 (5 per cent). The commonest histological diagnoses were pleomorphic adenoma (n = 776) and adenolymphoma (n = 159). A total of 244 carcinomas were seen (adenoid cystic carcinoma, n = 75). Treatment was primarily surgical, conservative where possible, and determined by tumour extent and not histology. Adjuvant radiation therapy was used in over half the definitiv

Warthin Tumor of the Parotid Gland: The History of an Eponym.

The eponymous history of Warthin tumor (WT) is a fascinating issue in the field of salivary gland pathology. The late decades of the nineteenth century and the turn of the century saw notable German and French contributions on WT. Especially, the seminal 1910 paper of Albrecht and Arzt of Vienna is the foundation for the current knowledge of WT. It is generally believed that prior to this pioneering study, Hildebrand of Göttingen accurately described the lesion of WT in 1895. However, the historical origins of WT appear to be unsettled, and only a few German pathologists and surgeons are aware
