A patient with primary biliary cirrhosis accompanied by Graves disease and Hurthle cell adenoma.

A case of Hurthle cell adenoma and Graves disease associated with primary biliary cirrhosis is reported in a 51-year-old woman, who developed elevated liver enzymes and hyperthyroidism. Thyroid disorders accompanying primary biliary cirrhosis, especially hypothyroidism, are well documented. Concomitance of primary biliary cirrhosis and hyperthyroidism is rare. Moreover, there has been no previous report of a case with Hurthle cell adenoma accompanied by Graves disease and primary biliary cirrhosis.

Ruptured hepatic adenoma in liver adenomatosis: a case report of emergency surgical management.

In hepatic adenomatosis, multiple liver cell adenomas (usually > or = 10) generally affects patients with no prior history of oral contraceptive use, androgenic steroid use, or glycogen storage disease. We report a rare case of a 44 year-old female who underwent emergency surgery for hemoperitoneum due to spontaneous rupture of a liver cell adenoma in hepatic adenomatosis, after prolonged use of two different contraceptives (Gestodene and Ethinylestradiol).

Giant hepatic adenoma with bone marrow metaplasia not associated with oral contraceptive intake.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular adenomas are the most common benign liver tumors. They are usually related to oral contraceptive intake. CASE PRESENTATION: This case describes a 58-year-old woman admitted to our institution for a hepatic mass incidentally discovered during a routine examination. The patient, who was never on oral contraceptives, was asymptomatic upon admission. She underwent a thorough diagnostic evaluation and then a hepatic right trisegmentectomy. The histologic evaluation of the mass showed that it was a hepatocellular adenoma with areas of bone marrow metaplasia. CONCLUSION:

The histology of liver tumors in oral contraceptive users observed during a national survey by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

As part of the national survey on the tumorigenesis of oral contraceptive drugs conducted by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, a histologic study was made of 94 cases of liver tumors in users and non-users of oral contraceptives. Pathologic criteria were established and then the slides were studied; the results were tabulated to determine the significance of each of the criteria as related to the use of contraceptives. These criteria included tumor size, peliosis hepatis, hemorrhage, necrosis, fibrosis, thrombosis, and vascular alterations of the intima and media. Cases o

Imaging surveillance outcomes of hepatocellular adenomas: systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatocellular adenomas (HCA) are typically resected if > 5 cm after 6 months due to historical risks of bleeding and malignant transformation. Outcomes of contemporary patients managed with surveillance are not well defined. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of patients with HCAs monitored for ≥ 6 months to assess rates of size stability, bleeding, and malignant transformation. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases were searched up to August 2025 for all articles reporting HCA and follow-up. Risk of bias was assessed with modified Risk Of Bias In

Snapshot summary of diagnosis and management of hepatocellular adenoma subtypes.

Hepatocellular adenomas (HCA) are rare benign hepatocellular tumors occurring mainly in women taking oral contraceptives with 2 major complications: severe bleeding and malignant transformation that can be avoided if nodules exceeding 5 cm are resected. This simple attitude has been challenged in the recent years with HCA in men, in young adolescent, in aged persons, and complications in hepatocellular adenomas below 5 cm. The discovery of specific mutations leading to specific phenotypes has modified the clinical spectrum of the disease. The phenotypic immune classification of HCA based on th

Hepatocellular adenoma: Classification, variants and clinical relevance.

Hepatocellular adenomas are benign tumors with two major complications, bleeding and malignant transformation. The overall narrative of hepatocellular adenoma has evolved over time. Solitary or multiple hepatocellular developing in the normal liver of women of child bearing age exposed to oral contraceptives still represents the most frequent clinical context, however, new associations are being recognized. Hepatocellular adenoma is discovered on a background of liver diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, vascular diseases, and alcoholic cirrhosis. Hepatocellular adenoma is also repo

Benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma in liver mimicking synchronic metastatic disease from colorectal cancer: a case report with emphasis on imaging findings.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland with metastases to the liver is a rare etiology of focal liver lesions, and there are no described pathognomonic imaging features. We report a patient who presented with a newly diagnosed rectal cancer and multiple cystic liver lesions suspicious of mucinous synchronous liver metastases. Following chemotherapy no reduction in the number or size of the liver lesions was observed. The patient was re-evaluated and a biopsy of a lesion was performed. The specimen showed a metastasis from a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland for which the patient had b

Klinefelter's syndrome and liver adenoma.

We describe the occurrence of a liver adenoma in a young patient with Klinefelter's syndrome, diagnosed by classic 47,XXY karyotype in all investigated cells and a sex hormone imbalance. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an association, which might suggest a simple coincidence. However, a pathogenetic link between Klinefelter's syndrome and liver adenoma can be suggested in view of the following facts: Liver adenoma mostly affects women of child-bearing age using oral contraceptives. It is very rare in men, and affected men frequently have been treated with androgens. Both gro

Loss of NUMB promotes hepatomegaly and hepatocellular carcinoma through the AKT/glycogen/hippo signaling.

Excessive glycogen deposition is a common feature of liver enlargement, liver adenoma, and liver cancer, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we found that NUMB, a well-known cell fate determinant, is downregulated in glycogen-rich adenomas and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). NUMB-deficient livers developed excessive glycogen accumulation and adenoma formation particularly in aged mice. Surprisingly, the Alb-Cre:Trp53loxP/loxP liver displayed no similar defective morphology and function, although p53 is considered an important downstream target of NUMB and clo

Giant ectopic liver, hepatocellular carcinoma and pachydermia-a rare genetic syndrome?

Ectopic liver is a very uncommon developmental anomaly that predisposes to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. We describe the second documented case of a hepatocellular carcinoma developing in the primary liver of a patient with a rare and uncharacterized genetic symptom complex. Also present was the largest ectopic liver ever reported, measuring 12 cm in diameter which contained a solitary focus of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. The primary hepatocellular carcinoma is believed to have arisen in the native liver from a hepatic adenoma that was diagnosed 15 years earlier. The pa

Synergy between hepatitis B virus expression and chemical hepatocarcinogens in transgenic mice.

Exposure of female hepatitis B virus transgenic mice of lineage 50-4, which display liver injury secondary to overexpression of the gene for the large envelope polypeptide of hepatitis B virus, to the hepatocarcinogens aflatoxin and diethylnitrosamine produced more rapid and extensive evidence of nodule formation and oval cell proliferation, as well as the development of adenomas and primary hepatocellular carcinomas, than was seen in transgenic mice not exposed to carcinogens. Adult mice are known to be resistant to the effects of aflatoxin or diethylnitrosamine, and the livers of carcinogen-

Systemic reactive amyloidosis caused by hepatocellular adenoma. A case report.

Systemic reactive amyloidosis caused by non-malignant tumors seems to be extremely rare. In the present paper a 39-year-old female with systemic reactive amyloidosis caused by a hepatocellular adenoma is described. The patient had a history of using contraceptive drugs. She had a pronounced nephrotic syndrome, a renal biopsy showing reactive (AA) amyloidosis, and a bone scintigraphy (99mTc methylene diphosphonate, TcMDP) showing an increased uptake in soft tissues. Removal of the adenoma was followed by a gradual resolution of the nephrotic syndrome and a normalization of the bone scintigraphy

Two-year carcinogenicity study in rats with a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor.

Administration of lersivirine, a nonnucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, daily by oral gavage to Sprague-Dawley rats for up to 2 yr was associated with decreased survival, decreased body weights, and an increase in neoplasms and related proliferative lesions in the liver, thyroid, kidney, and urinary bladder. Thyroid follicular adenoma and carcinoma, the associated thyroid follicular hypertrophy/hyperplasia, hepatocellular adenoma/adenocarcinoma, altered cell foci, and hepatocellular hypertrophy were consistent with lersivirine-related induction of hepatic microsomal enzymes. Survey of primary liver tumors and oral contraceptive use.

The American College of Surgeons' survey data on 378 female and 165 male cases of primary liver tumors reported by 477 hospitals in the United States during 1970--1975 are presented. In males, 91.5% of the tumors were malignant, confirming the rarity of benign liver tumors in males. Among females, 43.9% were malignant and 56.1% were benign. Of the 212 benign tumors, 96 were hepatic cell adenomas and 58 were focal nodular hyperplasias. A positive history of oral contraceptive use was found in nearly half of all tumors, 65% of benign tumors, 74% of hepatic cell adenomas, and 74% of focal nodular

Evaluation of the human hazard of the liver and lung tumors in mice treated with permethrin based on mode of action.

The non-genotoxic synthetic pyrethroid insecticide permethrin produced hepatocellular adenomas and bronchiolo-alveolar adenomas in female CD-1 mice, but not in male CD-1 mice or in female or male Wistar rats. Studies were performed to evaluate possible modes of action (MOAs) for permethrin-induced female CD-1 mouse liver and lung tumor formation. The MOA for liver tumor formation by permethrin involves activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), increased hepatocellular proliferation, development of altered hepatic foci, and ultimately liver tumors. This MOA is

Hepatic silicosis, cirrhosis, and liver tumors in mice and hamsters: studies of transforming growth factor beta expression.

Hepatic silicosis, cirrhosis, liver cell adenoma, and carcinomas developed in nude mice (NCr-Nu) given quartz by the subcutaneous and intraperitoneal routes. Syrian golden hamsters (15:16 EHS:cr) given quartz by both routes developed extensive fibrosis and cirrhosis and had higher morbidity and mortality rates after 3 months. Crystalline silica (quartz) induces fibrosis, adenomas, and carcinomas in the lungs of Fisher 344 rats, but certain strains of mice and hamsters are resistant to quartz-induced pulmonary carcinogenesis. Pulmonary fibrosis, however, is minimal in mice and absent in hamster
