A tailored nurse coaching intervention for oral chemotherapy adherence.

Although patients frequently express a preference for oral medications, compliance to these medications varies. Patients often have difficulty adhering to their medication schedules due to lack of understanding, inadequate support, or unwelcome side effects. Fostering adherence to oral chemotherapy regimens improves patients' chance of survival and long-term quality of life. This randomized trial tested the effectiveness of a tailored intervention to promote adherence to oral chemotherapeutic agents in 45 adult patients with cancer. The control group received the standard chemotherapy educatio

Development of a Patient-Centered Antipsychotic Medication Adherence Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: A substantial gap exists between patients and their mental health providers about patient's perceived barriers, facilitators, and motivators (BFMs) for taking antipsychotic medications. This article describes how we used an intervention mapping (IM) framework coupled with qualitative and quantitative item-selection methods to develop an intervention to bridge this gap with the goal of improving antipsychotic medication adherence. METHODS: IM is a stepwise method for developing and implementing health interventions. A previous study conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with pat

Role of interventional radiology in the management of morbidly adherent placenta.

The incidence of morbidly adherent placenta is rising and is directly proportional to the rate of rise of caesarean deliveries. Despite improvement in antenatal diagnosis, by accuracy of ultrasound and MRI techniques, placenta accreta is still associated with a high maternal morbidity rate. Management of pregnancies with a morbidly adherent placenta is extremely challenging and is becoming an increasingly common problem for maternity units globally. The main challenges include controlling the haemorrhage and dissection of the invaded tissues. Traditionally, these cases were managed by caesarea

Impact of Interventions on Medication Adherence in Patients With Coexisting Diabetes and Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of diabetes and hypertension is prevalent due to shared risk factors. Pharmacological treatment has been reported to be effective in managing both conditions. However, treatment effectiveness depends on the extent to which a patient adheres to their treatment. Poor adherence to long-term treatment for chronic diseases is a growing global problem of significant magnitude. Several interventions have been developed to help improve medication adherence in patients with coexisting diabetes and hypertension. This review aimed to determine the characteristics of these inte

Interventions for improving adherence to treatment for latent tuberculosis infection: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) control relies on high initiation and completion rates of preventive treatment to preclude progression to tuberculosis disease. Specific interventions may improve initiation and completion rates. The objective was to systematically review data on determinants of initiation, adherence and completion of LTBI treatment, and on interventions to improve initiation and completion. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature (PubMed, Embase) published up to February 2014 was performed. Relevant prospective intervention studies were assessed using G

Interventions to improve professional adherence to guidelines for prevention of device-related infections.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a major threat to patient safety, and are associated with mortality rates varying from 5% to 35%. Important risk factors associated with HAIs are the use of invasive medical devices (e.g. central lines, urinary catheters and mechanical ventilators), and poor staff adherence to infection prevention practices during insertion and care for the devices when in place. There are specific risk profiles for each device, but in general, the breakdown of aseptic technique during insertion and care for the device, as well as the duration of device u

Development and Validation of an Algorithm to Objectively Quantify Adherence to Offloading Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers require offloading for healing. However, adherence with removable offloading devices is often poor. Prior objective measures of adherence yielded important behavioral insights, despite substantial methodological limitations. This study sought to address these limitations by developing a method to track offloading adherence during walking and standing paired with tracking contralateral therapeutic footwear (shoe-lift) use. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults wore a removable cast walker (RCW) and contralateral shoe-lift. Accelerometers were placed on both and unilat

Translation and adaptation of the Brief Intervention Adherence Scale for the Tanzanian culture.

Harmful and hazardous alcohol use poses significant health risks globally. Brief interventions (BIs) have shown promise in reducing hazardous alcohol use, but fidelity to the protocol needs to be ensured, especially in low- and middle-income countries like Tanzania. Our study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Tanzanian-Swahili version of the BI adherence scale (BAS) adapted to Tanzanian culture. A psychometric evaluation of the BAS was conducted as part of the "Punguza Pombe Kwa Afya Yako" intervention. Translation and adaptation of the BAS were supervised by a committee of
